Dinky restoration of Spitfire Mk II No. 719. Die-cast battery toy. The Battle of Britain.

- In October 1969, Meccano Magazine published "Win the Battle of Britain with Dinky Toys". As part of the licensing deal with the film company, Meccano offered two new aircraft models, the Spitfire MkII and the JU87B Stuka, both packed in colorful branded packaging depicting scenes from the film. In the video, you can turn on subtitles in your language with a commentary on the action. Dinky's No 719 Spitfire MkII debuted in 1969. It was sold in a special Battle of Britain packaging until 1972. In later years, until 1978 in a blister packaging. Manufactured in 1/65 scale, the model features retractable landing gear and a spinning battery-operated propeller, as well as a realistic transparent cockpit canopy, correct 3-piece plastic exhaust pipes and a radio antenna. A brilliant innovation in the motor was the unusual use of a 2-pole type - instead of the more typical 3-pole or 5-pole. This meant no switch was required and the engine was started simply by turning the propeller.
Identification discs were pre-applied to the wings and the kids were able to stick the identification letters in the correct places on the fuselage to complete a very nice model. Mine had no propeller, had a cracked cockpit window, was missing the antenna and the wheels kept opening. I made a new windshield from ultraviolet cured resin. I restored the camouflage characteristic of the RAF air force and repaired the engine's electrics. I didn't quite know what voltage the motor was powered by. I used a 12V A23 battery. Thank you for watching the video, I publish videos with car repair on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

Moin z Cuxhaven 👋🏼
Ten serial ma dla mnie podwójne znaczenie.
Jako zwariowany staruszek mówię:
Świetna robota, jestem zachwycona.
Jako historyk wojskowości mówię:
Wspaniały hołd dla dzielnych ludzi, którzy latali tymi legendarnymi samolotami.
(LEST WE FORGET)
To co mnie najbardziej fascynuje to napęd śmigłowy. Prosta, ale pomysłowa 😎👍🏼
Paweł, jestem zachwycony, wyraźnie kciuki w górę ode mnie za ten 👍🏼
Dzięki za udostępnienie 🙏🏼
Miłego weekendu dla ciebie i twojej rodziny i pozostań bezpieczny i zdrowy.

Moin from Cuxhaven 👋🏼
This show has a double meaning for me.
As a die-cast crazy old man I say:
Great job, I'm thrilled.
As a military historian I say:
A wonderful tribute to the brave men who flew these legendary aircraft.
(LEST WE FORGET)
What fascinates me most is the propeller drive. Simple but ingenious 😎👍🏼
Paul, I'm thrilled, clearly a thumbs up from me for this 👍🏼
Thanks a lot for sharing 🙏🏼
Have a great weekend to you and your family and stay safe and sound.
Keep up the good work, mate.
Greetings from Paul on the North Sea shore.

(LEST WE FORGET)
Mach weiter so, mein Freund
Gruß vom Paul an der Nordseeküste.

That is Brilliant! I wish I had grown up with more dinky airplanes. Awesome work!
Thank you very much
Nice restoration, details and paint job 👍👍
Thank you very much
Super job, Paul. I like how you copied the windshield with the clear Oyumaru and UV resin.
Thank you very much
Splendid job Paul old chap, chocks away!!
Thank you very much Mark
The Spitfire is one of the most beautiful planes ever but sad it had to come from war...I love how that propeller works and the little video! I'm a broken record but excellent resto. as always. Jolly good stuff old man Roger Wilco and Out...Brrrrrm..
Thank you very much James
Greetings from North Carolina! Excellent job! 👍
Thank you very much James
Well Paul, you made my day my favourite airplane of all time. And great movie . I will attempt to do a Me109 i found. 👍
Thank you very much Nail
Brilliant! What a great job of work. These come up really well with a bit of work and that’s a lovely looking example now 👍🏻👏🏻👌🏻
I use ‘Blu Tack’ to mask the edges of the camouflage and fill in with tape.....it gives a slightly feathered edge 😉
Thank you very much
I like this Spitfire Mk 2 fighter plane famous warplane of World War 2 Battle of Britain fought against the Luftwaffe planes. Nice to see you do a warplane RAF. ❤️💘👍🤗😁😀🇬🇧🏴 I want one like this for me.
Vielen Dank Udo
The correct film markings as well. Apparently the markings were applied stickers in the film and kept peeling off.
Absolutely stunning 🤩
Remarkable modelling skills paul ❤
Thank you very much Raymond
Holy crap, I would have loved to have one of these as a kid. Back in the day that propeller action must have been mind-blowing, it's still cool as hell today.
thank you very much
I had one of these as a kid and and yes, the motorised propellor really made it. It was so cool too that you started it by flicking the prop - a really nice touch, and it did away with the need for any external switches.
The only downside was that as I remember the replacement batteries weren't all that easy to get hold of.
I have been watching a lot of the "Chip Channel Restorations" and while he has all the big toys and tells a better story in his videos, this channel achieves a much better restoration. It is hard to compare powder coating and spray painting techniques on an old toy, but overall I much prefer your finished restorations.
Thank you very much
Muchas gracias y Saludos
Te deseo mucha suerte con tu renovación. Saludos desde Polonia
Very impressive, camouflage turned out perfectly.
merci beaucoup Pedro
Brilliant work Paul the attention to detail and masking is first class.thank you for the video

Thank you very much Paul
People seem to forget how absolutely successful Dinky and Meccano were back in the 60's.
I had both the Spitfire and soon after the Stuka with what seemed to be less than satisfying play value,
(no motor) just a button released cap bomb.
You did a great job on the restoration here, my only gripe would be the antenna. but that's nothing compared
to the excellent spray job.
I was aware that the original battery was declared obsolete and was shocked to see that you found something
to replace it. Well Done!
Back to that motor, they were the toy's weakest point, about two or three battery changes and it was knackered.
It wasn't brushless, so they used to wear away very fast.
Guard that motor with your life, they cannot be replaced.
About the repro-box, I think the original came with a supportive card insert which held the model at a 45 degree
angle within the box.
The box did indeed come with a card insert that the model sat in at 45 degrees, and the wingtips slotted into it to stop it moving about. The paint is too glossy though - the original was a semi-matt finish, and the squadron markings are applied too far forward (they were stickers to be applied by the owner and they often ended up anywhere on the side!) As was said, the wing roundels and tail markings were paper stickers too, instead of waterslides. My original that I was given, shortly after the film appeared, still has its box and the unused stickers, and information leaflet. The motor has seen off an unknown number of batteries and still works, though only used when showing it off! A treasured childhood toy!
He's used the wrong battery - the A23 is 12V, but it should be a 1.5V N, E90, MN1900 or LR1...
@@CaseyJonesNumber1 Thanks for your input. Glad my memory hadn't been playing tricks. I agree 100% about the stickers, as I still have my Spitfire and Stuka sadly Unboxed, but in a fairly good nick considering just how old they are now. The finish should have been a kind of eggshell matt, but I'm not going to nit pick. Because I would have been tempted to seal the water transfers (he did use) under the clearcoat in order to make them more durable.
Muchas gracias Walter
Pavle nemám slov. Film Bitva o Británii jsem neviděl. Ale v Českém filmu Tmavomodrý svět létal jeden originální Spitfire. Díky za renovaci. 👍 Pavel 🇨🇿..

Great restoration.! If you wanted more realistic finish, give it another coat of gloss to seal the decals then finish with a matt varnish.
Thank you very much
Well done, as always. 👍
Thank you very much
I remember that Spitfire and also the Dinky Messerschmidt bf 109
Cool
Awesome 👌 I'm currently renovating a Dinky Hurricane for my father, he also had the Stuka with the cap bomb.
I was fortunate enough to find spare parts for it as well as Decals and it's coming along nicely, seeing this on the Spitfire was a treat for my Dad as his Brother had one, great upload 👍 🖖👍👊
Thank you very much

Perfekcyjna renowacja w bardzo wysokim standardzie, Paul. Spitfire znów jest topowym modelem w hangarze każdego kolekcjonera.
Świetna robota, aż do pracującego silnika. 1a. Życzę Ci miłego weekendu. Pozdrawiam Joachim
Vielen Dank Joachim
I had one of those toy planes too, but mine was a P-51D Mustang ☺️
Awesome video👏
Thank you very much Atrur
Nice rebuild, I was going to comment on the paint colours you used but I’ve seen this particular Dinky Spitfire painted in both the lighter shade of brown you’ve used and in the correct dark earth brown, I suppose it depended on when the model was produced which shade they painted it in.
Thank you very much. in this case, I used a lighter brown because it was closest to the colors painted by the factory. Kind regards

Nice resto,Paul.I actually shunned these as a kid,too gimmicky.still, they pleased some, but not me.
Thank you very much Terry
Looks better than when it was new. A fitting restoration.
Love the Battle of Britain box. So much nicer than the blister pack.
Where do you get the box pattern from?
Thank you very much . I make the boxes myself. I get patterns from the internet. I browse the Internet looking for boxes in nice condition, then I scale them in a graphics program and put them together. there's a video about it on my channel. Kind regards
@@PaulRestorer You even go to the enth degree to reproduce the boxes. Vey commendabe.
Wanted one of those so much...
👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿
Thank you very much .
I remember being given that as a 'kit' when I was about eight.
The temptation for me to put it all together, and then paint in half an hour, was all too much for my parents.
Nice work, but drilling out the rivet to remove the U/c spring was unnecessary though.
It wasn't a kit.
@@Gary-Seven-and-Isis-in-1968 It was available as a kit.
Ive still got my late 1950s/early 1960s bartenders that need a bit of tlc but they still work and puff out smoke.
Cool
32:46 DONT LET THE PLANE SHOOT ME!!!!!!!
Cool.
Another fabulous renovation well done I m surprised it’s not got a on/off switch
Nice work. Where do you get the artwork for the boxes?
thank you very much. I copy graphics from good photos and put them in a graphics program. a video about how they make boxes and is on my channel
Super Ci wyszło. A może jakąś maszynę budowlaną teraz?
Dzięki, postaram się
Tops
Thank you very much
Lovely job as usual but why gloss? Spitfires were originally painted matt when in war use and later in satin as it was easier to keep looking good for displays...
Yes, why gloss? Even the Dinky model was in a satin finish!
I used to have one of these! Did they make any of the German planes?
This is how, of course, Stukas and Messerschmitt built
Hi. good job! One question: what the paper you used for decail?
Thank you very much, Mr Decal Paper
