    so the XCW - with the lower 1st and 2nd gear - you're probably less likely to stall in the slower harder single track trails. Thanks for this video. I just bought a preowned 2009 200 XCW.

      Does anyone know how I can make my 250sx have slower gears. I’m not ready to give up track but I enjoy enduro. I’m on the clutch 99% of the time in single track. All my buddy’s with xc’s barely ride the clutch. Just smaller sprockets?

      Even ignoring the aesthetics, KTM's and Bergs are just much, much better bikes to tune, work on and maintain. It's blatantly obvious that KTM's were designed with some sensible engineering decisions vs the Japanese bikes that focus more on finding the exact right fastener for every single bolt hole = 423489107465981623498173 different bolts and a hell of a lot more time to do anything with them
      Pulling anything out of a KTM is very easy to do, and its such a pleasure to work on. PDS shocks come out in 2 bolts, thats it. You don't have to strip half the damn bike off the frame to get it out. Parts are vastly interchangeable across the board, for instance the exact same rims/hubs/bearings/spacers are used for the entire full size lineup from 125 to 500 (and even many of the adventure bikes) across years from ~2003 to 2017 I believe (with only small differences before and after that, which you can use adapters), because why the hell change it every couple years and every model like the japs do? Just engineer it PROPERLY once, and then use it over and over again. Makes parts super easy to find and very cheap 2nd hand
      Almost all fasteners where reasonable are the same size meaning you only need a very small toolkit to work on the entire bike etc

    Kyle great videos and info. I am picking up a 2019 KTM 300 XC-F TPI next week. It was a tough choice deciding between this bike and the XC. Your videos definitely helped. I am coming off a 450WR, hoping the xcf hits hard enough out of the hole. I ride mostly trails - classify myself as a beginner to intermediate rider but want to get better.

    Good breakdown. On a side note for the shorter riders, such as myself, the linkage makes the bike sit quite a bit lower than the PDS so that is huge for me. I put the short seat on it and didn't touch anything else. A few of my previous KTM's I have had lowered due to my height and injuries and the suspension was never right. I currently have a 2017 Husky TX300 with about 210 hours on it, it's basically the same as the 300xc save a few small things. I am loving the air fork, it's also the first fork I haven't had to valve for my lighter weight. I run it at 123-127 psi. 123 for slow speed technical and 127 for desert and more open riding. Almost everyone I ride with has the XCW 6 Days or "regular" XCW and it's too tall for me when we swap bikes. The gearing is noticeably different and less gap which I prefer. I am generally in 3rd when XCW's are in 2. I am 5'9" and under 150 lbs.

    Nice video! I agree about the trans. My preference is also the XC trans, 1st is actually a little low on the "W" even in gnarly stuff, making it easier to get on the pipe and spin when you wanna grunt it. The 300 has so much grunt that it pulls the slightly taller XC 1st gear just fine in the gnar. An owner can always gear the XC down a little if 1st is too tall also.
    These 300s are great bikes either way - they are favorite I have ever owned. Selling my '13 TE 300 (XC-W) and just bought and '18 XC. The new e-start and counter balancer are awesome! :)

    Great video! Just entered the contest, fingers crossed! Just bought my first dirtbike last summer. A 2008 Yamaha ttr230, nothing special but figured it was somewhere to start. Not knowing a ton about dirtbikes when I was looking for my first one I didn’t know too much about 2 strokes and thought they were more about being on the pipe and riding balls to the wall. I’ve learned a lot about dirt bikes in general and have seen how versatile 2 strokes really are. My riding style isn’t too fast (yet) and after watching many of your videos I’ve thought a 300 xcw would be right up my alley one day.

    I am considering an XC and gear it down if I didn't like the first and second ratios after riding for a bit, they are a good bit lighter that the EXC and XCW lines, and since I'm riding offroad only with it and not wide open terrain, mostly single track mountain and forest trails....might be a good pairing with my 500exc.

    Linkage works better for fast guys in racing - its less prone to packing and kicking in faster trail whoops. Linkage makes the shock handle wider variety of conditions without revalving it. This was more obvious in the older KTM's. Fast guys with a PDS (no link) often have to re-valve for their preferred area (which is why it sucks). Give me a XC with softer valving and lighting. Or a XCW with linkage. Not fast ? .......then it wont really matter as much.

    Id say that the xc is really for specific racing. It could be geared accordingly for your specific race/riding conditions but it has the "semi close ratio" transmission so its for specific use conditions whereas the wide ratio transmission would be better for a more wide variety of conditions without changing sprockets.

This applies to both 4 and 2 strokes.

    Excellent call on the XC-W/EXC gearing. Even with stock 14/48 gearing 1st & 2nd are just too low and short on my 200 EXC. I've gone the extreme route of 13/52 to make 3rd gear usable for crawling around with just a little clutch slipping. It appears the newer models are running 13/50 stock which is much better suited to the types of riding most folks would use these bikes for.

  • @gilvietor1918
    @gilvietor1918 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The ratio gear issue he is talking about is easy to explain this way... You have a tight corner before a huge hill climb and you can only do 2nd gear but the pull is long on the hill. My Te250i husky tpi bike had problems sometimes in those areas but man could it go through tight stuff with ease. My guess is a 300 would have done better in that sudden hill climb scenario. I'm sure Kyle knows the trail I am talking about up by Strawberry Reservoir, I believe it is 310?

    My local KTM shop owner told me the xc's are built with mx engines, 300 being a bored out 250 to get more top end than a normal exc or xc/w. Also, to the guy that says you don't get certain bikes in certain places, you get them all in Europe, not sure about Australia n that but check their websites. Where it says something like ktmmotorcycles/eu change the eu to en and it will show you a bunch of different bikes. They've got different websites for different places. If I had to choose one it would be the XC 250 but I can see why you might want a 300!? The exc's and xc\w's above 150cc are inferior bikes to the xc's in my opinion. But that's just my opinion!!?

    Hey Kyle, could you try the BRC Racing 500cc kit for the ktm 250/300?
    I'm very curious to hear your thoughts on a big 500 and how it works on that bike.

      You need a nice fat wallet for that mod but I think it would be the best 500 ever since they haven't been any new technology on them since 1989

      BRC for Yamaha YZ250 ya but but I would stick with the KTM catalog kit for it I didn't know BRC made one for KTM..

    I live in Belguim Europe Exc doesn't have linkage here but PDS.. I like linkage more that is why I don't ride Ktm.
    Big difference in acceleration PDS the suspension will lift the bike and traction is less, but better to clear obstacles
    In linkage the bike lowers in acceleration more traction, that's also why used in MX .

    What year did they start making the counter balanced motors? My last 2003 300XC would vibrate so bad, it was hard to walk after a fairly long ride. (feet buzzing)
    Thanks for the super great videos!

    Great info! I always assumed the Ws were better for wide open speed since they are road legal and come with lights.

    • @stephenmitchum5864
      @stephenmitchum5864 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      W’ are not street legal in the USA and they only have tail and head lights, they do not have turn signals, brake lights and do not meet emission to be street legal. The EXC in the USA is street legal.

      @@stephenmitchum5864 They used to come “street titled” from the factory. Did this change?

    • @stephenmitchum5864
      @stephenmitchum5864 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rah_84 no bike comes from the factory titled, all bikes come from the factory with a certificate of origin. The dealer then uses the Certificate to do the title work. KTM always had a gray area in that their certificate’s for off road bikes, the did not have “ for off road use only” on them as required to be on non street legal units. Some dealers would take the risk and title off road KTM’s as street bikes.

    Ws need a taller 6th I would prefer the gaps be in the upper gears. My w is geared for the narly mountain stuff 13, 53 and it could really use a higher 6th for road sections.

      @@nepicness exactly the transmission s would be better with a super high 6th who cares if it bogs for a second on top as long as it drops the rpm s significantly.
