I searched for this Portlandia video because I've always loved it and just heard the tune out in the world somewhere. I was hoping I could find the song, and now because of @basketball9167 's comment I found it! Thank you!!
I love the way how at the end he kinda acknowledges that this is weird when he says "do the dog thing", I nearly died laughing. Also the seriousness and look in his eyes when he says, "THAT IS MY FRIEND"... lmfao
The taxi shown when they are supposedly leaving the airport is a Buick LaSabre. But when they are being dropped off at the coffee shop, their taxi turns into a Ford Crown Victoria.
The reason for that is a Buick LaSabre is synonymastic with Freudian sub-cultures and undercurrents of newness from the birth from the vaginal waters that cascade over the sub conscious trivialities of life but the Ford Crown Victoria is all about arriving and stiff upper lipmanship upon with or to which bequeath upon the savage beast of what not what we knoweth.
Dammit, if they just hadn’t messed up that one detail, I’d have thought it was a documentary. You’re like one of those guys who warns the world that the moon landing was fake.
I feel like the vibe to a lot of these videos is some weird inside joke that may or may not actually exist, but its so funny in execution that it really doesn't matter.. this is great! and im SO glad that this is a thing
I agree, I think that's why I like it. I wasn't sure about Portlandia at first, but the more I watched it the more it reminded me of Tim and Eric...to an extent. I think it's just a less bizarre/more controlled version of that humor so a wider audience can appreciate it.
its taken me so long to realise, but this is actually like "what if japanese people came to the west and fetishized parts of our culture as much as we do theirs".
Are you serious? You realize that the "cultural appropriation" stuff that makes you clutch at your pearls.. treating a little kid in a mulan costume for halloween or some white dude with dreadlocks as if they were just taking a dump on peoples' graves... ...you realize that in many non-anglophone regions of the world, that's still considered amusing and benign, right? And that Japan is like the world HQ for what you would call "cultural appropriation"? If you get professionally offended, then Japan is not for you, because the concepts you're talking about don't carry any weight over there. On the other hand, if you like exploring silly and outrageous ideas without other adults scolding you like a kindergartner for it, then it might just be a good match.
My 1st waitress job, I was living in a small Northern California town, north of San Francisco. A big tour bus of Japanese tourists stopped at our restaurant & loaded into our banquet room & I was taking orders from everyone, and they all giggled and said “Orange Juice, tee hee”, I was extremely confused and the restaurant owner, George said that we were the land of orange juice bc it was California, lol. This was 1976 and truly bizarre to very young me.
@shartkeythe2nd Oh no you di-int!!!!! You did not just double YOU me!!?? Don't you know who you're talking to? I'm the master of Youing. Got my degree in Youology. From Youale.
The fashion is like 15-20 years out of date though... The whole Harajuku/Gyaru thing died ages ago. Nowdays they should be dressed in baggy, shapeless layers of brown/beige/black.
His grandfather wasn't Japanese but Korean. He was born Park Yeong-in in Ulsan, Korea but adopted a Japanese name (Ehara Masumi) and persona after the massacre of Koreans in 1923.
Thank you for having a sense of humor, Kari. People who are getting upset by this are overreacting. Japanese culture, whether modern harajuku stuff or traditional, is amazing and unique. Sometimes silly people just like doing impressions of zany Japanese pop idols (or their fans). It's not racist or mean-spirited.
I actually assumed this was a parody of japanophiles rather than Japanese people themselves. but I guess we can all get a little star struck if we go somewhere we've been wanting to go.
Man I like how they roast the beans here, it’s like the only place in town that does it right, (girl giggles) LMAO 😂 best part ever, this show is better than Family Guy
Man I like how they roast the beans here
Lol!!
It’s like the only place in town that does it right
Great impression

I was laughing so hard the first time I watched this, that it was painful. It's so hilarious when he starts talking English in an American accent.
*speaking
YOU'RE so hilarious when he starts talking English in an American accent
can confirm that this skit made me fall off my chair laughing that I couldn't breathe...when they fucking shrink and jump on the table it was over.
What a trip this skit was
It "sparks joy!" I'm keeping it forever! lol
I saw that dude this morning in Portland. He's real.

Is there an app for "the dog thing?" Plus, kudos to your awesome username.
That kid cracks me up, he never says 'anything'
So they don't have to pay him SAG rates.
I love that dude

Deplorably Candid hahahahaa

Yes. It's like they see the humor in sub cultures and personality archetypes
This show is bat-shit crazy and I'm here for all of it. 🤣😂😅
One of my favorite sketches of theirs lmao
the impression and the way they treat "johnny depp" akdfjksdjf this is so spot on
As a Japanese person, this is SO ACCURATE. I laughed so hard when they got the smallest coffee. Japanese ppl are obsessed with small cute things
Except this is supposed to be Americans misrepresenting Japanese culture.
I'm changing my dog's name to Hichiro!
I love satire done right bc it just illuminates how ppl that try on cultures actually look lol
Thank you!!! It's the best jam ever!!!
I lived in Tokyo for three years and saw people like this in cafés...
Wish I could laugh harder at this...
That would get obnoxious after a while.
Classic
Everytime I’m feelin down I just play this video 😂
i really can't with carrie lmao

The show is edited by the same guy who edits tim and eric Dj Dougpound
That's what I was about to say, it's like Tim and Eric for people that live up north west coast
Dj douggpound is the best.

Uh do westerners fetishize Japanese culture? Apart from our consumption of anime, I don't think we do at all.
They definitely do
well aren't you slow considering that's the giant OBVIOUS premise of the entire skit
Just about to get a coffee and this popped in my head! Coffee land!!
I teach english to Japanese girls and this is very accurate

Best portlandia sketch
The song that plays at the end, Splash Woman from Mega Ran. That's so Random.
best video ever!
I love how much better this show is when you live in portland
I wonder why they never revisited these characters.
Prolly because no one got the joke and thought it was just a really cringe-y stereotype skit.
effects probably cost too much.
I really like the super happy song that plays. Like every time someone drinks coffee this song has to play right?! Cheers!
This is the BEST one. Haha
Fun fact: Fred Armisen's grand father is Japanese.
That's crazy awesome.

i like how they consulted an actual japanese so they can get the lingos right

I agree with Stranger to Myself. We all are charactetures at certain times of our life
1. The sketch is a parody of Japanophiles
2. Armisen's grandfather is Japanese/Korean
3. Comedy
I've seen my share of J-TV... this is hilarious!
I love how the song they use was Yoshi Tatsu's from WWE.
I'm getting 'Tim and Eric' vibes from this, especially at the end.
hahahha the two impressions that he does
LOOOOL WTF HOW DID I MISS THIS ONE HAHAHAH
I want to be one of them. It looks like fun.
I love that her left thumb nail broke off haha

hey that's the tune they use for the Dtoid show as well
This feels very Tim and Eric-y

Cool story bro.
I am not nearly high enough for this.
Do you... need to be? lmao
Not that anyone cares but the Japanese text they keep flashing doesn't say "ride complete," it says "Let's ride again! That was so fun!"
Out of the whole show this one makes me wonder what the fuck the most!
"Yoo look like a yohnny deppp"
So funny!!!!!!!! Again! Again!!!!!! 😂😂😂😂
Yes, yes. But... smaller this time...
There's way more people like this now then when this came out holy s***
