    I really appreciate your solid work on on this recreation! FWIW, I still have all of my "classic" DM albums (Speak and Spell, Construction Time Again, A Broken Frame, 101, Violator, etc.) on cassette format that I bought back in my high school days of the late '80s, and I'm honestly surprised that I didn't completely abrade the oxide coating clean off the tape substrate, since I was constantly playing them all. "Puppets" has been a personal favorite since virtually forever, or at least the past 35+ years.

    Can you explain the snare patch, please? I am mostly curious about the purpose of the envelope out into ring mod in, then I see the switch is set to DC. What is happening with the modulation in the ring mod, and then being fed back into the VCF mixer? thanks!

    • @tomnoise23
      @tomnoise23  ปีที่แล้ว

      If you set the Ring Modulator to DC-Mode it means that it works like a VCA. So in this patch it serves as an additional VCA.

    • @TheObxpander
      @TheObxpander ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tomnoise23 Thank you for explaining. In this case though, what is the purpose of using the VCA to attenuate the envelope? especially since it looks like the slider is fully up?

      @@tomnoise23 Uhmmm...that's true, actually, haha. :-D
      Hey t.noise, since you have both, I have an interesting challenge. You are extremely and astonishingly close to the original with the version above (even the YT bot identified it as the original "Puppets"), could you replicate all the sounds as close as it gets with the Behringer 2600 and make another video? Even just a short version of it? That would be super interesting! :)

    • @tomnoise23
      @tomnoise23  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@henrikgerlach4765 I already had the same thought about making the same song with two different synthesizers. On the other hand Puppets is using rather simple sounds and i think it could be replicated with many other synths too. So i doubt that it would be very insightful in the end.
      A different song using more characteristic sounds would be better for such a "challenge" in my opinion.
      Oh and i am pretty sure that it would sound a bit different even if used the 2600M and start from scratch on the same track.

  • @truthministry.
    @truthministry. ปีที่แล้ว

    Awesome job! I was only listening to this album just a few days ago too. I see you have a Behringer Gray Meanie to the left anbd wondered how it compares to the Korg 2600? I have been told the envelopes on the Korg are better for snappier sounds, and also more decay. The one thing about the Korg I wish they'd installed is a portamento switch, like the BARP. It would be good to see what you think about the comparisons. Thanks.

    • @tomnoise23
      @tomnoise23  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! Yes indeed. The Korg's envelope is much snappier and the overall sound is more aggressive and brighter to the Behringer. I have made a longer video where i play 3 different 2600 clones (Behringer, Antonus, Korg) side by side. You can find it on my channel as well.

    • @truthministry.
      @truthministry. ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tomnoise23 Thanks very much for your reply, it really does help me choose the Korg. I like the Behringer too, but need the snappier envelopes, and like the form factor in Korg. I will check out your other videos too. The Korg sounds AMAZING on this video by the way ;0)

  • @Thoracius
    @Thoracius 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Some constructive criticism: many of the brighter sounds need a lower cutoff frequency on the LPF. Intro sound could use a slightly slow attack on the filter cutoff and some chorus effect. The original also does a cool thing where the reverb is panned opposite the sound. The bass could use doubletracking. If you listen to the original, a second bass comes in panned slightly more to the right after the bass fade-in, and it's fuzzier and has more sustain. Creates a bigger, fatter stereo sound. But yeah that's really close, especially the chorus.

    Really nice. I would never have thought to make the bass drum that way, by inverting the ADSR signal and putting it into an audio input. I guess it just makes a thump sound right?

    • @tomnoise23
      @tomnoise23  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes exactly. The original ARP had this infamous deep DC thump which is also there, but not so strong in the 2600M. Normally I would try to avoid it but for this kickdrum sound it was helpful to add. It’s just inverted because that Ringmod input is inverted as well.

      Along with the 2600, they used the synths that they were using in their live shows. Vince Clarke had a Jupiter 4, Martin played a Yamaha synth and Fletch had a Moog Source. I think they also had a Boss drum machine.

      @tomnoise23  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    • @henrikstolpe
      @henrikstolpe 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tomnoise23 thanks! Just one more question :) Is the Korg as bright as the Behringers? Could you elaborate a bit on the authenticity part? There are almost zero comparisions out there and im trying to choose which one to get.

    • @tomnoise23
      @tomnoise23  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@henrikstolpe They both can sound bright. The biggest and most obvious difference ist the spring reverb, which is, to my taste, much more useful and authentic sounding on the Korg. Also the Oscillator Mixer is, same as an original 2600, not as clean as on the Behringer. The adsr envelope shape and the filters are closer to an original one, too. This is my personal opinion and is based on comparisons with old audio files from my vintage 2600, which i have sold a few years ago.
      On the other hand, the build quality of the Korg is not really up to it's price, but that's just cosmetics imo (plastic nuts on the jacks, little flaws on the painting on mine).
      The Behringer has a lot of useful additions (LFO, Sync, Trigger in for the ADSR etc) and with some workarounds it can sound very close to an original as well. Also, it has switches for everything, whereas on the Korg you need to perform some switch combinations after powering it up to program the trigger behaviour or voice mode. Portamento is only accessible via midi control on the Korg.

    • @henrikstolpe
      @henrikstolpe 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tomnoise23 thanks a lot for this answer! I was hesitant to go for the Korg as when I had both the Behringer and Korg Odyssey next to each other the Korg was a bit ”stiffer” and the filters lacked some high end. But it sounds like the 2600 doesnt have these issues then.
