    I'm pretty sure Belos only called Hunter "Caleb" because he can't see him as his own person, for him Hunter is just a copy of his Brother that he can't ever control
    He calls Hunter a "better version" but i don't think he sees Hunter as an improvement really

    One thing this episode confirmed for me was Luz’s reaction to Alador’s abomination in reaching out. After the siren on it’s head starts going off, she gets really upset and yells “get out of my head!”. In the video diary hearing Luz talk about moving to a closer hospital and that reaction to the siren means she probably had to watch him get taken away on ambulances a lot, or at the very least, the last time she saw him, was being taken to the hospital for the last time. Let me go sit in a corner and cry

    If Camila were to get a palismen, I don't think she'd carve one. I think she'd take care of one of the Bat Queen's adoptables, instead, because she is herself a vet. She cares for animals that are not her own, but in this instance, she gets to adopt it as her own. Maybe she can even patch it up if it's damaged. She's a healer, so it'd fit perfectly.

    My thoughts and things I noticed:
    - Philip in the time-travel episode, he's wearing Caleb's old coat.
    - The first thing that happens to Belos in the human world after like 400 years away, he gets hit by a car, which is funny
    - I thought Belos could fully possess Hunter because they share the same blood. They're directly related.
    - As for why he tried possessing animals before, it seemed like he was just testing the waters, gathering strength.
    - Vee probably adapted to the human world better than the other witches because she's a shape-shifter. She's naturally pre-disposed to picking up on cues and constantly learning how to adapt and copy people. It's very plausible that she does know how to drive.
    - I think Gus knew that Hunter was a grimwalker, but wanted Hunter to tell him for himself, to have him take his time. He made emphasis on the clone character in the Cosmic Frontier books, even saying that "he thinks the captain already knows". And he didn't seem that shocked like Willow did when Luz blurted it out at the end.
    - I had two assumptions as to why Luz had a bunk bed, each one kind of sad for different reasons. The more sad one being maybe Camilla and Manny were expecting twins and something happened; or alternatively at some point they were planning to have more kids. The less-sad one being that Luz wanted a bunk bed as an excuse so she could attempt to invite friends over for sleepovers, which of course never happened because she had no friends. I think the second one is more likely.
    - Belos basically ruined the Human Realm for Hunter. The boy was having fun, smiling, not even thinking about going back to the Demon Realm, not thinking of it as his home because there's no one waiting for him like the kids with their families. But Belos killed Flapjack and possessed Hunter and ruined the Human Realm for him.
    - I thought Belos called Flapjack by Caleb and Evelyn because for one, he never bothered to learn it's name because he doesn't see it as more than a thing, and second but more importantly he probably associates Flapjack more with the negative memory of Caleb and Evelyn.
    - I can kind of get why Luz and Camilla are still mourning and not totally the same. Losing a parent at such a young age can have such a drastic effect. I lost my mom earlier this year to Leukemia, I'm 25, my dad and I just have been in this rut for the past almost year. Having someone you love more than anything and just all of sudden they're not there anymore and never will be again. All you want to do is stay home and even home doesn't feel like home anymore.

    27:14 - The "Grimwaker recipe" in the book in episode 7 says 'Bone of ortet'.
    Ortet means the original plant that clones descent from. So bone of ortet would be...well, let's just say there's a "piece" of Caleb in Hunter for sure.

    I think the "It's been really rough for Mom since the funeral" is not only, well, grief for once of course. But also Camila's sense of loss with Manny's death. We can se Camila defending herself and Luz more in the playground scene, for example, but as time goes by and as Camila becomes alone, raising a child by herself she starts doubting herself, her choices, and listening to others more. Because she wants to be the best for Luz and make the best choices for Luz. We know Camila was also bullied for being herself, if the only person that understood that and accepted that part of yourself (that we know of, what with the hinted couple cosplay perhaps?) is gone now no wonder Camila felt insecure & alone, but now with a child! A child that is now also reflecting experiences that were painful to you, that you would rather have your child never experience. Not taking away anything from Camila or saying Manny was the only reason she was self-assured, not at all. Just saying, they were weirdos together.

    I TOTALLY agree that Camilla needs to meet Bump! The amount of validation both of them (and Luz) would get from it? Amazing. A Principal who encouraged a student's creativity, had the guts to challenge the educational authority on the subject? The growth that the entire school (students and faculty) benefited from? Reassuring Camilla that a kid (Luz, but also herself when younger) isn't at fault when they don't fit the rigid boxes society likes to impose? *Chef's kiss!*

    The funeral feels a lot more recent than it did in reaching out. I thought he had passed when she was really small with the ribbons in her hair.. but it almost seems like he passed just a few years before she left for the demon realm. Like it was only a few years before she cut her hair off, and did the book report.

      Yeah, I was thinking that too. The only hint we got to that timeline was Luz saying it happened 'a while ago' which honestly could mean a lot of things. And it feels very in character for her to sorta downplay it to the point that she even fudges how long ago it was to make it seem not as serious.

    • @AerielArt
      @AerielArt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      I'm going to agree that it was a couple years before the beginning of the series. Just feels like a good fit. She looks close to her age at the beginning of the series, it's enough time for all of the shenanigans between to have happened like her getting into Azura, growing and cutting her hair, etc. Its long enough to feel like 'a while ago' but still recent enough that the sting would still be felt.

    • @LoreCatan
      @LoreCatan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      @@AerielArt We gotta remember that Luz is only 14 [maybe nearing 15 at this point, perhaps by the end of the series?] so 4 years or 5 would be a long time for a child while still relatively recent. In my personal opinion I think Luz losing her father at 10 y/o makes perfect sense, children grow a lot between 10-14, especially since that's when puberty starts for most pre-teens, so her different appearance in her video journal could easily be explained by that fact.
      This amount of time would also be enough to establish a routine with her mom around that date, enough for her to miss doing it in Reaching Out, because it would've been something they did for nearly a third of her life at this point.

      I agree it confused me a bit too. The Reaching Out ep suggests their tradition of visiting dad's resting place felt like an annual occurance (the word tradition is used), which to me suggested several years.
      I wonder if maybe the tradition started when dad was alive (visiting and giving flowers if he was eg hospice-bound, maybe a birthday which changed when he passed?, I dunno).

    I feel like Flapjack will be with Hunter in the same way as the souls of the devoured Palismen were with Belos but in a healthy way, able to provide new inspiration and confidence for him after this trauma. This show loves its parallels, and in a similar way to how Manny's gift inspires Luz, Flapjack's sacrifice will keep Hunter driven through the hardships yet to come. I could see him carving a new palisman by the end of the final special.

    29:30 - One of my earliest theories was that witches are actually just humans who arrived to the Demon realm in ages past and used glyphs for centuries until slowly they evolved into witches from the proximity to the titan.
    In a couple episodes they mention demons come from the titan's decomposing body, but they never mention where witches come from, and Eda says she "know witches used to do magic differently in the past, but I never bothered to figure out how" in season 1 episode 4 (which btw is one of my favorites).

    Belos only ever seems to possess skeletons before Hunter, so I definitely think Hunter being a grimwalker was important, not to mention that they focused on the goo entering through the cut on his finger, meaning Belos probably couldn't have possessed him just on contact, he has to be able to get inside, and I think Flapjack's sacrifice will have patched whatever "weakness" Belos exploited. I also really love the theory that Hunter will be able to do magic naturally when they return.

    • @LoreCatan
      @LoreCatan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      It's important to note that both Hunter and Flapjack are made of palistrom wood, because it's an ingredient when making Grimwalkers!
      This also makes Hunter's changing eye color make sense, as Flapjack basically fused with Hunter to save his life, and thus, I predict that Hunter will now be able to do magic on his own like a real witch.

      @@LoreCatan idk I always assumed they were bodies/living animals when he possessed them and what we see is the aftermath of him devouring a bunch of them. Sort of like how he had to eat palesmen in the demon realm. Maybe he can posses skeletons to move them and he has to eat them bodies survive? That would probably make the most sense based on the graveyard of animal bones.

    • @LoreCatan
      @LoreCatan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@solsystem1342 Haha, you're not the only one reading into that trans allegory! I've been thinking of it as one since the whole "I'm Caleb/Hunter" thing, the grimwalker stuff just enhanced it tenfold.
      And I've honestly no idea, but I could see that making sense, I wonder if he can survive in his current state without doing it tbh [allegory for addiction, maybe?].
      I also like that that can also imply that life itself is also magic, no matter if it's from a palisman [which probably has greater magic inside of itself, maybe] or an animal. Perhaps not all of Phillip's "companions" were sacrifices on adventures, but sacrifices in quite a few different ways [I imagine Belos attempted to make grimwalkers with different people first, which is fucked to think about].
      Back to the "life is magic" train of though, that could also explain the magic of the isles, as it comes from the Titan itself! As well, blood, symbolically being the thing that gives us life, is one of the most powerful resources in this world. Given Belos' obsession with what "wild magic does to the soul", and how the concept of souls has been brought up again after so long, it's interesting to think about.
      Especially since glyphs can be found randomly in nature as well, which can also be considered as "in the wild" [and consequently , the animals found in nature are called "wild life", which makes Belos' possessions of deer and the like highly ironic]. Thinking about this more and more, I can't help but feel like magic and life are intrinsically linked, which is supposed to represent that magic is completely natural [and possibly an allegory for being queer in general].
      Sorry this is so long, you gave me a lot to think about!

      Honestly, ever since the possession of Hunter, I've made some connections that are rather... disturbing... With regards to the grimwalkers. Point one: Belos has been alive for an absurdly long time. Point two: Belos seems to have gotten younger since that first experiment with the coven seals. Point three: There are a few discrepancies between the features of Phillip and Belos. Basically, I'm saying that I'm pretty sure that Phillip has just become the goo, and periodically claims the body of the current grimwalker to keep living. Hence the changed facial features, the new hair color, and the pointed ears, among other things...

    Camilla never actually made Luz promise not to return to the Boiling Isles. That's just how Luz remembered it happening, similarly to how when she misremembers the Collector's rhymes. I had to look cause at first I thought maybe Camila bought the bunk bed after she got to know Vee better and prepared for Luz to come back, but we see the bunk bed in Yesterday's Lie so that's thrown out the window. Honestly I can see Luz being one of those kids who really wanted a bunk bed just because (perfect place for blanket forts, cozy sleeping area on the bottom, feel cool sleeping on the top bunk.), and her parents bought it so they could have extra sleeping arrangements for family when they visited, which I'm going to assume they did at least for the funeral if not to help Manny and Camila out when Manny got really sick.I mean besides just the bunk bed Camila had two extra beds lying around somewhere and were ready for Amity and Willow that night. I feel like if Luz had a sibling we would have known at this point.
    Also as someone who lost their Dad at 12, my Mom has never been the same since either (and I'm 25 now). I'm not sure if it's me projecting, but at least for me, my parents were so close that one without the other is like loosing 1 1/2 people. Just little things like my parents sitting outside on the glider on late summer afternoons talking and relaxing, or going out on a walk in the woods near our house as a family, that my Mom just didn't do anymore without him. But because we never got an episode or any flashback of how Luz's family was before Manny passed we'll never really know for sure how different things were.

More sleeping options, more opportunities to do flips off the top bunk, or climb things weirdly, or use the top for curling up with cats and the bottom for reading. I can 100% see Luz either requesting a bunk bed for herself OR Luz being so excited in the furniture store that Camila couldn't justify a basic twin frame.

    I wonder if Philip calls Hunter "Caleb" more now as he views him as betraying him now/becoming "defective". As every Hunter is him basically trying to make a new perfect/redeemed Caleb (in his eyes), every time they break away and "betray" him its Caleb (the defective one) coming to the surface again and again. Palismen don't have to worry about that whole 'physical space' thing, lol. As always, I love your analysis, so many beautiful and clear, well-thought-through points. The presence of Manny throughout the show is so lovely-- and given that he and Camila clearly bonded over Cosmic Frontier, with their cosplays and con lanyards in the closet, it's doubly lovely that he gave his daughter the book that ended up helping her bond with her awesome girlfriend. There's a ton of generational trauma in this show but sometimes things repeat out of love.

    I like to believe that Luz has her Palisman Egg with her at all time. The episode did a great job at show that to us, at school, at her mom workplace. It also is very like Luz to keep it with her at all time just to make sure she don't miss it's "hatching" (or uncoiling if we get the snake palisman). I feel like I've seen so many people theorizing that Flapjack's sacrifice is going to be like a "good" version of Belos/Philip's Palismen absorptions, but I don't think this is going to be the case. Just as you pointed out, the transition of Flapjack's magic to Hunter, vs the transition of Palismen magic to Belos/Philip, are very different, with Flapjack's magic manifesting as a golden/yellow-green color as he heals Hunter, whereas, when Belos/Philip absorbed a Palisman's magic, it manifested as a bright green color. In addition to this, whenever Belos/Philip consumed a Palisman, that Palisman would turn to dust once he had absorbed all of their magic, whereas, with Flapjack, he dissipated into these golden orbs that vanished into the sky as he healed Hunter. Not only do the two appear very different, but the circumstances in which these Palismen are absorbed are also very different as well. Belos/Philip absorbed all of his Palismen against their will, whereas Flapjack willingly sacrificed himself to save Hunter. In Hollow Mind, we see that the Palismen that Belos/Philip had absorbed became trapped in his mind, almost as if they were stuck in some kind of purgatory, fighting him for control and warping him into a literal monster. I think Flapjack's sacrifice is going to be opposite of this. I don't think Flapjack is going to be trapped in Hunter's mind, and I don't think they're going to be able to communicate with one another. Instead, I think that, when Flapjack sacrificed himself, he used the last of his magic to heal Hunter, and that, when we saw those yellow orbs dissipate into the sky, that was his soul passing on. When Hunter says "I already know," it's because he can feel that Flapjack's presence is no longer there.
    I think this theory is further supported by a small detail I noticed that I haven't seen anyone else mention. During the graveyard scene, a white throated sparrow can be heard singing in the background a few different times throughout the scene, most notably when Luz first enters the graveyard, and when Hunter says "I already know" after Flapjack revives him. A quick Google search will show that sparrows have had many different meanings associated with them throughout human history, however, one that stuck out to me in particular, in context to this scene, is that sparrows have long been believed to carry the souls of the dead to the afterlife. I can't help but wonder, could this be a subtle hint that Flapjack's spirit has passed on?
    Between the sparrow song, the imagery of the yellow orbs, and Hunter already knowing that Flapjack was gone once he was revived, I have a strong feeling that Flapjack has passed on. Considering that Dana has also specifically stated in an interview that these next 2 episodes will continue to tackle the topic of grief, I think we're going to see Hunter having to confront his own grief and come to terms with Flapjack's passing in the upcoming specials.
    Anyways, that's just my theory that I haven't seen anyone else really touch upon, and I'm curious if anyone else has thought similarly, or if anyone else noticed the bird song, but just didn't make a connection to some potential deeper meaning.

    Really like how clearly you point out themes and parallels. The thing that missed for me in this episode was Luz hiding her feelings from amity/friends exactly as she’s done before (in reaching out) - not confirming growth there felt flat

    I think that when flapjack is with Hunter, Belos stops seeing hunter and starts seeing Caleb. Also either Flapjack was Calebs palisman and he named the bird after his witch friend OR flapjack is Evelyns palisman and belos sees it as an embodiment of Evelyns interference in that moment

    Your analysis as always, is on point!
    Learning to forgive yourself for mistakes you've made in the past while also growing and being a better person, is something that hits really close to home for me and one of the things I'm still learning how to do. Seeing Camilla, Luz and Hunter still struggle with their past decisions while chosing to move forward with the support of each other and the rest of their friends (found family) is so heartwarming. Even though a lot of the times there are setbacks and sacrifices towards that path, having each other to lean on in those hard times is the true magic of the owl house (imo anyways 🙂)

    I’m thinking that Camilla bought the bunk bed for when luz came back (after she figures out the the whole vee thing) so they can share the room. I’m not sure tho and I’d have to look at that episode again and see if there was already a bunk bed before she knew
    Edit: nvm I checked, the buck bed was there at the beginning of the episode, sooooo I’m out of guesses 🤷‍♀️

    I love your analysis so much. I'm in the process of writing a fanfic for the series with heavy themes of alienation, trauma, unhealthy coping mechanisms and the importance of connection with other people. Breaking it down like this to explain the themes and underlying messages really helps me confirm my own understanding and helps focus my rewatches so that I better pick up the more subtle details as well.

    This is my thought about the bunk bed: She's Dominican, I'm dominican. I have a lot of cousins who would travel from different cities, states, and countries and my parents had a second matress under their bed just for my family. Sooooooo Luz bunk bed is just for her cousins for when they come over to stay. VERU loose reasoning BUT until proven other wise this is my true!

    the one thing I noticed about all the drama with Hunter, Belos and flapjack and palismans and his eyes changing colors, in the book some os the ingredients to apparently heal grim walkers are like palisman wood, but Belos always took that properties from palismans by killing/destroying them, trying to heal himself but always taking in a forcefully way only made him worse, flapjack willingly healing Hunter I think that's why he's mayyybe not a grim walker anymore.

    idk the flapjack being kind of absorbed into hunter made sense to me because theyre both made of wood? 👀
    like a palisman is carved out of palistrom wood, and palistrom wood (needed for keratin) is also an important ingredient in the... Recipe of a grimwalker dhavdjsn
    WAIT A SEC. KERATIN IS AN IMPORTANT COMPONENT OF HAIR....
    is belos goop made out of liquid palismen??? is THAT the reason why hunters hair grows so much? can belos manipulate grimwalker hair the same way he can manipulate his goop body?? xD
