It's funny that he mentions that things in the studio tend to not be "effective" after midnite. I remember hearing that Dangelo and Bob Power were having "creative differences" and Russell Elevado was called in to finish some of the songs for the Brown Sugar album. He later mixed the all the rest of Dangelo's album's which are amazing but my point was Dangelo was a night owl. He'd wake up at 5PM and be up all nite. His hours were different and he worked mostly after midnite. He also liked to smoke his weed ; ) This may have been one of those differences.
I've watched this so many times and when I woke up yesterday and this was on I just let it keep playing. When he gets to talking about politics and the politics and the division between political parties isnt only due to the hubris of one side of it. I kind of got the impression that he was suggesting that the left hasn't done ourselves any favors trying to convince the right that their beliefs are incorrect when the way they try and communicate that message we frequently can be condescending or preachy, and that the closest people off to hearing about your trying to tell them.
Great video-for those interested in D’Angelo or Dilla however, they are only briefly mentioned, so if that’s the content you’re looking for perhaps Quest’s and Russel Elvado’s interviews are more suited to that.
There's an attack and nobody can dispute Bob Power's ability to elevate music production to a level of true grandeur. Some of these kids have missed the point entirely and some totally understand the reasoning.
I love Bob's approach to requiring payment but take it one step further: no payment, no handing over of recorded assets. It's really quite simple --- only in audio would someone be expected to hand over the goods and MAYBE get paid later. Makes no sense. Cash on delivery of recorded assets. Simple. The only reason someone would have a problem with that is if they have no intention of paying you. Get it? Weed out the non-payers instantly with that one simple trick.
i think he just means that Dilla didn’t have a whole lotta elements to his beats. A lot of his beats were like 8-10 tracks max. Kick, Snare, hi-hat, chopped sample and bass. That’s a testament to how great he was. Able to make the best, most classic sounding shit with a couple ingredients. No overthinking.
That's what I came here to comment. I was like "who would just randomly know the sample for the drum break to award tour" then look up and it's him lol
I was wondering from the beginning where this was recorded. I've now watched 2 hours of the video, and I've just realized that they're sitting in front of a huge map 😂😂
The background music is odious. It may be bangin sweet tunes, but, Its buried in the interview, stabbing its hands out of the earth like ravenous zombies clutching at.... oh, it went away at 7:30ish Thank goodness
He talks very little about dilla, only about 1:50:00 ( give or take ) on how dilla was molding kick and bass and his great ear for low end which ends up controling the whole track sonically. Like a minute long talk maybe.
1:09:30 Bob Power says this while seemingly oblivious to the fact that he made his whole career working with people that stole from from others work: SAMPLING
It’s only “stealing” if the original artist isn’t compensated, which hasn’t been an issue with the labels/artists Bob works with since about ‘91. What decade are you living in?
@@brawndothethirstmutilator9848 and the situation also evolved into people sampling and trying to hide the source of the sample with processing and other trickery, where have YOU been? Fucking annoying maggot
That guy who was trying to justify pirating music is seriously flawed logistically. By his logic anything that humanity produces is the property of the public and can be taken and consumed the fruit stand metaphor is exactly right if you replace music with a material object it’s a ridiculous concept to believe you have the right to take it but somehow with music it’s acceptable?
If he was in a band since like 10, learned stuff and ended up working for his uncle in a studio or a TV set on a weekends and if he did just that and wanted to do just that than he wants to count his carrer since his decision and be proud. It is a certain personality, un common one + we all have unconacious biases as a default.
You dont think 13 year olds were playing clubs and working in studios back in the 70's. Like growing up in the 80's we were free range, everything was so different before 9/11.
A little dishonest to diss on p2p sharing which in fact was shown help the record business and then turn around to admit you "pirated" something to remove the hiss from a sample... I guess that Mr. Power doesn't like it that we can taste the fruit before committing into buying em. Aside, you can't compare a primal need with a secondary need... That's a sophism of a very low degree.
@RÉMON Peer to peer sharing isn't illegal in a lot of countries and as I mentioned, it's been shown by studies that it actually helps the music industry by allowing people with no financial means to listen to stuff and thus making them discover artists they would have otherwise never heard of. Also, it's not because you admit you did something that you regret it: there's no actual logic to that.
Nobody actually believes piracy helped the music business, and everyone who works in the music business saw their sales devastated overnight by Napster. Maybe listen to the people who actually lived through it.
Your comment is very ill informed. First of all, I'm not nobody and so is Roger Wallis. The "everyone" you are referring to are not the artist, producers and creators behind the music people listen to: they are the bureaucrats who have managed to get control over the product distribution of the art. I'd suggest watching the documentary "TPB AFK" to get a better idea of the true fight behind this polemic.
I like alot of things that he is saying but ".... recordcompanys make a lot of money, well start your own." is klassist and denying the fact that not everyone can start his own buisness depending on his resources.
Everyone can start a record label brother. Gotta work hard, team up with God and make shit happen. Not saying it's going to be the biggest record label, but we can currently be completely independent and make a living, like we couldn't before.
