Imagine how psyched Ben Franklin was coming across written documentation of a tornado for the first time. He's browsing through some old documentation about Rome, and does a double take at the footnote: "by the way, a colossal rotating column of wind destroyed a section of Rome a few decades ago." It's fascinating that tornados are so rare that before the modern era, they were considered pseudo-mythical (like giant squids used to be).

@@AtarahDerek The thing is, even in Oklahoma, a typical person isn't going to see one of those vortices of death every year. You would probably know there was a storm if it got that close, but you wouldn't know it was a tornado.

    RIP the Twistex team
The 2013 El Reno Tornado was the widest ever recorded at 2.6 miles wide and a wind speed that rivaled the 1999 Moore F5, and it expanded at an insane rate with a massive radius that was not obvious to chasers and that's what led to their deaths. One other chaser also died that day as well, Richard Henderson. Another chaser from the Weather Channel had his vehicle picked up and tossed and miraculously made it out with no significant injury. That tornado challenged very knowledgeable people and did things that were not typical or precedented. It moved the way it wanted and took up as much space as it wanted, too. I hope all chasers keep that day in mind because it's a really good reminder to watch out for the wildcard that defies common knowledge.

Yeah, Mike Bettes and the Tornado Hunt 2013 team from the Weather Channel got tossed by that tornado. A bit of their footage was at the end of the video. They were lucky. Most of them had minor injuries, and while the driver had to go to the hospital, they all survived. I don’t think Mike Bettes has been out in the field since then, and I cannot blame him. Between that and arriving in Joplin moments after the 2011 tornado, he was traumatized.

Ok, as both a kid, and now a middle aged adult, the tornado scene from Wizard of Oz is still one of my favorite movie tornado scenes of all time. The fact they pulled that off so beautifully eighty five years ago is stunning to me. And this weekend (as of release/as of typing this) helped to show how far technology has come with spotters on the ground when channels like Ryan Hall Y'all helped massively with warning time in Sulphur, Oklahoma this weekend, and out ahead of that storm. I have a good friend in Oklahoma that I was worried about and it turned out she was close enough to the worst storms to warrant spending time in the basement with her family. Be it from warnings or just the storm winds alone, they didn't take chances. You have no idea how thankful I am to everyone in the weather community, from my childhood to even now. From those that chase to for the beauty, to those that chase for the hard science, to those that chase to warn, I am thankful. The science videos and lessons I learned in school, to those like this channel that help keep the science alive and up to date, I am also very thankful.

I became interested in Weather in general while as far back as I can remember, I went flying with my Dad, a WW II U.S. Army Air Corp Combat Pilot & General Aviation Recreational Pilot. I remember observing that different Weather Conditions caused us to have different kinds of rides in my Dad's collection of Airplanes. At a very early age I learned of Thermals, (Updrafts & Downdrafts,) which caused us to have Bumpy Rides.
We were a Puerto Rican Jewish Israeli Family, so we also got a fair share of Wind Shear. Tornadoes are rare in Puerto Rico, but in 1973, My Parents & I moved briefly to New York then to Xenia Ohio just in time to Survive The April 3rd, 1974 Xenia F-5 Tornado. My Parents had just bought our house in The Arrowhead Subdivision. While our house was completely disassembled from around us, Miraculously we survived completely uninjured!!!
The next day I decided that I would become a Meteorologist, although I had to wait a few years, as I was just 11 years old when the Tornado Hit us.
But I also wanted to be a Pilot. I became a Licensed Glider Pilot at The Age of 14, I Soloed in A Powered Airplane on my 16th Birthday, I received My Airplane Private Pilot License at age 17, & later that same year I earned my Commercial & Instrument Ratings. From there I had to work my way up to Multiengine Ratings, Turbo Prop Ratings & Jet Ratings, which as it turned out, my Dad owned all three types of Airplanes. I just had to get Instruction Time in each of these Airplanes, which I did while I was attending UCLA earning my Degree in Meteorology. I was going for my Master's Degree in Meteorology.
However my goal was to become an Airline Pilot, which I did until I retired, taking time off in The Spring to Chase Tornadoes. I was most interested in Researching The Same Thing that Tim Samaras was working on, to provide understanding of The Dynamics that occur at The Lower Levels Of Tornadoes, with The Hopes of Providing Structural Engineers & Architects with information that would lead to The Development of Tornado Resistant Homes & Public Buildings.
Now, getting older, but still in Retirement from 40 years of Flying Airliners. As a Pilot, I worked in The Level of The Atmosphere where Weather Forms, giving me incredible insight into The Weather.
Yes, I saw The Wizard Of Oz, & Perhaps that influenced me to a certain degree, but I didn't speak English yet, so My Parents explained everything to me in Spanish.
But for me, I look to Personal Experiences as my primary catalyst for my dual-faceted Career.
I don't put videos on Social Media, I'm extremely Computer Literate, but I do Put Tornado Warnings on my Facebook Page.
This past Saturday Evening, in Oklahoma, I was too busy with avoiding Multiple Nocturnal Tornadoes to even post Tornado Warnings.
I stopped my Chase at about midnight & went back to help in any way that I could, namely in The Sulfur Area! I was taken aback by The Total Devastation there.

Glad to see a shout out to Ryan Hall Y’all here - I honestly think that the realtime compilation of data from many different sources that he uses (live radar, storm chasers on the ground, twitter and Emergency Management Updates, Meteorologists like Andy Hill, etc) are the future of severe weather broadcasting. They have the realistic potential to save many lives by going so in-depth and being so responsive to immediate events. Max Velocity also does a good job of this.
The only limitation is the lack of co-operation amongst *some* within the storm chasing community (copyright issues, not being allowed to show twitter feeds live, etc)…These people should all share a common interest of educating and protecting the public as their first priority above all else.
Would love to see a big storm chasing name like Pecos Hank or Reed Timmer link up with these guys as clearly this is where things are heading.

Storm Chasers on Discovery was my in, it’s what got me hooked for the most part but the biggest thing was the Sunday after the El Reno tornado. I was 9, just about to turn ten in a week and it was a weird Sunday because my family didn’t go to church that day. My brother and I did our ritual of making a blanket fort and watching Storm Chasers all day (regular weekend day occurrence) and right before I went to bed my parents had told me the news of Tim Samaras, Paul Samaras, and Carl Young passing just that Friday in what would become one of the best studied and most famous tornadoes ever. It was so weird hearing that after having watched him all day on Storm Chasers and missing tornado intercepts for safety concerns. I think that is what sealed my fascination with tornadoes and I’ve just started chasing now! I’ve yet to visit the memorial as I haven’t found myself out that way yet but I know the first time I am, I am paying the memorial a visit so I can officially pay my respects and call myself a proper storm chaser.

My folks are familiar with Ryan Hall; he used to be a meteorologist out of their part of the country. We rely a lot on his weather forecasts too. He does SO much good work for communities hard hit by severe weather and honestly, mad respect for that. We didn't get to use it, but we bought one of his Y'all-o-meters for snowfall this past year lol... the money goes to a good cause!
That being said, the work these guys do is intense and I could NEVER. Putting their lives on the line to get data that will (hopefully) ultimately lead to better forecasting and prediction models to save more lives in areas both hard hit by tornadoes and those that may see one rarely. Putting in the real work out there.

Its incredible to think how far this has come in the past 50 years. OU was still working on the Doppler project in the late 1970s. They were recruiting people to be chasers to send in data as to where they were and what was happening. My husband, a chemistry major, in 1974/78, who grew up in Oklahoma (Antlers) volunteered. He talks about the radio, clip board, and binoculars that he had to do the work. They would spot, then the triangulation to make sure that what they saw on Doppler actually was where the tornado was. That calibration too a few years but it's so valuable now for calling storms and their paths. When we went to see Sean Casey's IMAX film in Galveston, he had the TIV-2 with him. My husband got a photo with the vehicle and Sean. As I was working to set up things, they got to talking about the old chases and Sean surprised (and actually flattered) my husband by asking for HIS autograph as an early chaser. That was wild.

Just want to mention something, that El Rino tornado mentioned at the end. I'm sure most people know, but it was only rated EF3 due to it not causing much damage (mostly in Rural areas)
It reached wind speeds up to 302Mph, easily breaking EF5 speeds. Actually I think it's one of the fastest speeds recorded in tornadoes.
I've seen so many videos about it, and some are seriously terrifying. I would never want to see that headed towards me.

I’m definitely in the crowd of people whose fascination of tornadoes started with The Wizard of Oz, which I watched a million times when I was little. Then my fascination picked up more with the show Storm Chasers, and I wanted to be one myself up until I experienced my own tornado at age 11 and realized I wasn’t mentally cut out to be one. Now, almost 14 years later, I get to “storm chase” from the safety of my home outside of tornado alley with livestreams. (Got to witness many of the significant events of the first half of the April 2024 outbreak 3 days ago via livestream.) It’s amazing how much the scene has evolved in 20 years and I can’t wait to see what’s next! (I also may storm chase myself one day, but only if it involves waterspouts way off the coastline.)

I was watching Storm Chaser Brandon Copic's livestream recently when he was in Oklahoma & Texas, and he stopped at the Twistex Memorial, and that was a day after Reed's team intercepted multiple tornadoes in the Dominator 3. Different chasers, different tools, different methods.

Hell yeah, Hank deserves all the spotlights he can get, and Twister inspired a whole generation of chasers. TIV > literally every other "intercept" vehicle made yet. Reed himself is impressive, but his nadomobile is like the flimsy Chinese knockoff TIV that can barely handle outer bands.

Hey Swegle, if you plan to create a storm chasing vehicle video, feel free to include info about tornado intercept devices too.
I don't know how many kinds are out there, but I remember seeing one team design these mostly flat red cones fitted with a camera inside. The camera was at the tip of the cone pointing straight up at the sky- the goal was to film straight into the eye of a tornado.
Another more recent team built actual rockets that they fired directly into tornados. These rockets were able to gather multiple weather data like changes in pressure and altitude. They're really cool, they even have little parachutes and gps markers so they can be recovered afterwards.
Just an idea for the video. I bet there's more devices out there that chasers have come up with.

I didn't think Ben Franklin could get any cooler. Then again I need to take some time to sit down and brush up on my US history again sometime. Tornado chasing on horseback has got to be one of the most epic things ever. :D
Discovery's Storm Chasers was what really got me into tornadoes, severe weather, and chasing. Specifically, the tornado intercept vehicle. I live in New England, and we get all sorts of weather on a daily basis, in all seasons of the year. Tornadoes are something of a rarity here due to the geography (although one recently went through Rhode Island not far from where I go to college), but I've been aware of and fascinated by them pretty much forever. I couldn't tell you how it started: one day I learned what a tornado was, and that was it. I've seen Twister, and younger me thought it was a cool movie, chasing tornadoes in all these different and colorful vehicles, but I never really cared much for it, the idea of storm chasing, or tornadoes themselves. It was kind of a niche thing to me, if you will.
That all changed when I got the Discovery Kids' Tornado Lab for Christmas, and with it a DVD of Season 1 Episode 1 of Storm Chasers. The moment when TIV 1 roared across the screen in a cloud of dust on a dirt road in the first opening shot of the episode, my little mind was blown, as I had never seen or heard of something like it before. Being a far bigger vehicle junkie than a weather fan, the idea of a homemade armored tank that can drive into tornadoes was perhaps the coolest idea I had learned of in a while at the time, and that was what got me hooked. So with that said, I really cannot wait for whenever you make a video covering these incredible machines.

This episode reminds me of a book I love called Storm Kings by Lee Sandlin, an awesome book. It’s also on audible.
It’s an extensive history of storm chasers. That book turned me on to “The Great Mysterious Tornado of 1805”. What’s interesting about that tornado is that it’s lasted for hours and travelled 100’s of miles.
It’s damage path created a huge impassable wall of trees piled on top of each other 2 miles wide that parts of it was still in place after the American Civil War. BUT MOST INTERESTING is its path would be the nearly the path that 120 years later the Great Tristate Tornado would follow.
It’s possible the 1805 actually may have gone through 4 states. The Great Tristate had a granddaddy.
