This is the story of how Starfruit changed speedrunning for the better! Peter: / petresinc BulbasaurRepresent: / @bulbasaurrepresent WarMechGaming: / warmechgaming A1Major: / a1major
Not a speedrunner, but Snow Pea combines with Starfruit so well. Even so 20 Starfruit from Column 6 to 9 in Roof level kill a Football Zombie less than 5 Seconds.
2 forward side projectiles at the cost of barely 125 while you had to pay 200 for a repeater for 2 projectiles or 100 for a pea shooter to get a projectile. Starfruit is OP for its cost when not placed on the first or last row. Even then you get a backwards and a side ways projectile. No wonder it costs 175 sun in PvP mode while repeater costs 150 (console version).
It seems so weird to me to think that people speedran the game for many years before thinking "hey, what if we used starfruit?", because every time i played through the game I'd just use starfruits as soon as i got them because of how good they were when spammed. Of course, since all of them were casual playthroughs i never thought of how fast they could be and played safe using pumpkins and chompers, but it's nice to see that they are being used in speedruns now
I learned about how good Starfruit actually was from watching challenge runs like shyguymask! But since they were challenge runs (as opposed to speedruns) I also didn't think much of it. I'm glad the lil boi is getting the recognition he deserves now!!
I did actually propose a strategy for any% once which included cactus. Don't ask how, but part of the strategy (not the cactus part, but the general idea of it) did actually make its way to 5-1 in the form of peashooter + repeater
@@kozolith2121 Basically the idea was that instead of cabbage + repeater, you took cabbage + peashooter + cactus, all plants that have basically the same dps and cost, and effectively you would be able to juggle all three at once and be able to constantly plant firepower. The idea came from 1-7, where we're forced to use snow pea which is usually useless in speedruns, but it does occasionally get used to avoid peashooter cooldown. I do think that if we had cactus on a 2 flag, daytime, non-roof level then the strategy would have actually been good (although there's no reason not to use split pea instead, cactus was just funnier) but alas we do not live in that timeline. It did make me realise that peashooter + repeater was a really good strategy on 5-1 though.
Huh, I remember learning the power of starfruit when playing the AltVerz mod, I can't believe this wasn't found earlier for speedrunning- a cool feature about starfruit is that, since its projectiles span all the lanes, projectiles tend to target the zombies most ahead and push the zombies back- kind of acting like Cattail in that manner. I guess that also this front-zombie-targeting aspect kind of like a pseudo-instant, dealing with the zombie most ahead instead of even spread out damage across all lanes- making instas doing more overall damage to zombies in the backend
Bonus starfruit footage - this is a really cool strategy used in pogo party shopless! th-cam.com/video/heMa1NexUlY/w-d-xo.html Starfruit strats also have one very important thing over repeater: THEY'RE SO MUCH FUN
Oddly fitting how someone who's username contains the name of a Grass Type Pokemon helped shave off speedrunning time for Plants VS Zombies (as well as being the current record holder)
One thing that is intriguing for me is that this strategy is not found until 03/2023? (If I undertsand it right), after over 15 years and the there are still something new in PvZ. Truly an epic and classic game of all time.
I've been using starfruit strat ever since I saw it on one of the challenges to just build starfruit on every lawn, it was totally shocking that time and I kept using it by the time, didn't know this was a thing now! LMAO
9:05 the funny thing is that on one of the mobile versions the star projectile hitbox is set behind for some reason, so the shotgun effect works on any zombie a tile behind rather than needing to be directly on starfruit
I always liked that plant only because it would fill my screen with projectiles, and it was satisfacotry having multiple rows of starfruits filling the entire screen

in speedrunning, people use the least expected thing and they end up doing better than other people
Starfruit is a somewhat awkward plant to use, but honestly, after using it on said roof levels (and Vegezombies thinking it could dodge its attacks, then not reseting when the game defied logic) it kinda felt like a 125 nerfed Gloom shroom, unintuitive to use but very rewarding once you understand the angles it is shooting at, like using a 125 sun repeater in terms of DPS, who doesn't rely on Garlic/Pumpkin or torchwood but on instas in the early game because, just like the reed in PvZ2, it works best on groups to fill the screen with attacks.
Excellent watch, the time flew by and i now have a hunger for even pvz history from you in the future!! Starfruits are the startfruits of something amazing..,,
Weird choice to have a "before starfruit" section, but not mention what the records were. The discord screenshot at 4:56 was clearly supposed to be a "NANI?!" moment, but without any frame of reference for the previous times it just kinda falls flat.
wait this revolution was as late as 2023? no wonder why shyguymask always said the plant is heavily underrated. like come on it's 5 projectiles with the cost efficency of scaredy shroom. work around the gimmick and it's amazing value for money.
Well. Since the first time i played pvz, i think in the minigame where you must plant starfruit. And that's where i realized, how powerful starfruit is. 25% cost more from peashooter and you get? - double diagonal front attack - one backward - double up and down So much fire coverage for +25% cost. Good for early and mid game i guess.
Weirdly, I frequently use starfruit not because of those speedrunner. It's because someguy on youtube "shyguymask" said this starfruit are S+ tier plant.
I knew it when I was playing that Starfruit minigame and was surprised how it was destroying everything when I got 1/2 of the needed Starfruit I had to put down
I exclusively always used starfruit because they always seemed to tear up the stages. Wish I knew there was a whole speed running community I could have shared my discovery with lol
I think the reason why Starfruit is so underrated is because he was unlocked too late into the game, and generally the base game is already super easy to begin with. That's why when you decided to put your own restrictions or speedruns, his full potential is unlocked. For example, if he was unlocked during Night or early Pool levels, he would have been solid since he can be used more often in pool which is a massive advantage. But since he was unlocked at the end of Fog levels and the world after that is Roof, he doesn't get much usage. The only time you would actually use Starfruit is probably in mini games and some survivals, the former only had few stages while for the latter you would ended up saving for Gatling setups or Winter Melon setups.
This is exactly what happened. He's unlocked so late that you also have a pretty good idea of what you want your strategy to be in roof, and when you get to roof he's not even super new so you're not testing him out there either.
Am glad that peeps are seeing the true potential of star fruit. Can never forget that my dad was the one who introduced its potential to me and was always his key plant in every mode and why he has a high streak on Zombie Endless Pool edition.
I Always Play With 2 Backrow Of Sunflowers And Then Pushed My Lanes Forward Early Game By Only Planting Sun And Potato Mines/Mimic PM. Farmed A Good Amount Of Sun To Start Placing 2 3-Shooters On Both The Top And Bottom Lane To Have Firepower Going Down Each Lane Before 1st Wave. This Would Get Me Through Pretty Quick To Then Just Upgrade My Backrow Of Sunflower To The Double Flowers And Remove My Second Flower Row For More 3Shooters As I Spam Them. Then I Found Out About Starfruit And Started Spamming Them Because It Was Way More Cost Efficient.
