i had the pleasure of seeing this on broadway - i was very young. My grandmother had taken all of her grandkids..it was so lovely. seeing this play peeked my interest in theatre..
she's the only dorothy in my wiz world. No one else can compare. ❤

I was 16 years old 1970 9 when I saw it I've been a fan of his ever since her voice is incredible she sounds the same as in the recording they don't produce her voice much it's like a raw recording unbelievable and she still sounds like this today

As a kid I went to see this at the Fischer Theater in Detroit. My first of many plays my mother would take me to. She’d purchase the album and I would play the songs allllll day and sing them all. It was my happy place. Almost 50 years later I play this during a time in my life when I am stressing and it puts me back in a HAPPY place and brings a sense of Gratitude about my mom to my remembrance. I am Grateful to my mom for giving me an outlet and a wonderful childhood that only I understand.❤❤❤

No. These are clips of the 1983/1984 revival. The actress on the watermelon is Ann Duquesnay. Dee Dee Bridgewater descended from a pyramid down a flight of stairs escorted by Quadlings, the minions and attendants in her domain in the original 1975 show!
@@btheatre1 when I saw it 2x in NYC And in San Francisco… deedee bridgewater floated in riding a giant slice of watermelon 🍉 and her ‘natural’ hair trailed behind her for 50 feet…I still get chills… I would have loved to see the golden pyramid thing….🥰

Fantastic, but it sounds like it was cut up a little. Like a scene was missing.
Very old B-Roll video at the point where the tape was damaged it was then edited so you do get a portion that is missing.

Wow interesting fact before the wiz was produced on 1978 they initially wanted to have Stephanie mills play Dorothy rather then Diana Ross
No they did NOT ! They NEVER asked NOR considered Stephanie Mills for the film. Mills even said so many times and in an Essence magazine interview that she was never considered for the role of Dorothy in the film version. That is a lie and has always been an untruth passed around. I'm SO GLAD they chose Diana Ross who was Brilliant along with Michael Jackson who was secured in the film because of Diana Ross. Then Michael met Quincy Jones and we got Thriller etc. It all happened the way it was meant to be.
If they didn’t ask her well, that’s a shame because she would’ve been the best person for the role hands-down

Stephanie NEVER said she wasn’t considered for the film.
She just eluded to answering questions when it comes to that because of her respect and admiration for Ms.Ross.
Geoffrey Holder actually mentioned that Stephanie was privately considered for the movie role…in fact the producers fixed her appearance by straightening her teeth and fixing her nose around this time in mid 1977 and 1978.
Stephanie missed a LOT of performances during her run on broadway due to her carrying the show along with recording… tv appearances…etc… plus getting plastic surgery for possible consideration for the upcoming movie role which ultimately went to Ms. Ross.
She would blow her voice out a lot also so you almost always got an understudy during 77 and 78.
Also the show changed theatres a few times as well so Renee Harris or Gayle Turner were often on as Dorothy so know your stuff before you call people liars.

It was never a vocal competition. It was new Broadway girl versus a World renowned superstar the choice was a no-brainer for box office sales. It was a "safe bet".
