They would’ve been carrying me and you together LMMFAO 😢😂🤣😭 As a matter of fact they would’ve had to lock 🔐 US up in an Insane Asylum until after the show….Lol 🤣🤣
You know what I was just going over that! Whitney or Mariah are heralded as the greatest female R&B vocalists, but if I had to rank them to Stephanie Mills I'd take STEPHANIE!! Angela Winbush and Vesta Williams deserve their UNSUNG Flowers in the Hall of Fame of R&B too 👍♥️
This was the first Broadway play I saw in my life. I was blessed to sit right over the pit, and it is what made me become a musician. I have never forgot it, and I am 50 years old now LOL
I saw Stephanie Mills perform this showstopper on a quiet Saturday matinee when the Wiz was running on Broadway. She blew the roof off the theater. It was breathtakingly exhilarating.
Our Upward Bound Program in Norfolk Va. sponsored a trip to see this show on Broadway . Stephanie Mills was awe inspiring! This was my 1st Broadway show and it positively impacted our entire group for life!
I am 72,.... saw the second performance ever as a young man, with Mills as a teen. I was overcome with emotion. This was a revolutionary approach on Broadway, showcasing and leveraging how African Americans' talent was underrepresented for far too long. Last night I saw the touring version of The Wiz, nuanced with today's African American artists. It ranks with Hamilton as the best musical I have seen in my lifetime. Hope you can experience it once again.
@@TruthSerum101 I know this now, back then there was still some stuff I was learning because of all the different accusations of her age, because of when the show opened as a local play and etc before it went to Broadway.
Living in NYC for all most 40 years as a dancer/model I had the amazing opportunity to see most everything on Broadway. There are few times that a performer came stop the show and I was blown away when I saw Stephanie Mills sing "Home"! I saw "The Wiz" 8 times, which was all I could afford because I was buying a ticket to every other play and musical, and watched with delight one of the best musicals ever. The critics panned the show and then months later "The Wiz" won the Tony for best musical. Don't believe what the critics say.
When Stephanie sings this song, I feel it in the depths of my soul. It is something about the way she caress the words and pulls you in. She brings me to tears every time. Love it!!!
So many people can actually sing songs and sound just like the original artist, but til this day I've never.....heard anyone sound like Stephanie Mills her voice can not be copied!!♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️best voice ever ..........
I seen this live and like no another vocalize, she bring down the house. She held a note that felt more like a force of nature ⚡️🔥🎼then a supreme note. Leah Tunkara 2023
I was lucky to see this in NYC with the ORIGINAL cast; Stephanie Mills, Mable King, Andre DeShields, etc. I absolutely loved it and my mother took me back three more times to see it. Excellent!!
+Margaret Nelson That's great to hear. I only saw the movie version before with Diana Ross as Dorothy! Are you excited for Stephanie to play Aunty Em in the NBC production of the Wiz this December
The Wiz will always be near and dear to my heart. I grew up in NYC and at the age of 14 it was the first Broadway Show I had ever seen. Theater has become my passion in life (that's me as Juan Peron.) I still cannot ever hear this song without crying my eyes out! Stephanie Mills never got the real recognition she deserved. Love this and love her!
I was super blessed to see this. I had to be only 4 or so yrs old and I guess it must have been when the touring show visited DC, but I LOOOOOVE the play SOOOO MUCH, I became addicted to the album, got a crush on Nipsey Russel (the Tin Man) and was bitten by the music and theater love bug that is STILL with me today!! The live play was surrounding, consuming, and totally and completely awesome....especially as a tiny little kid that I was!!! 🤗🤗🤗💗💗💗💗👍👍👍👍👍
When I was 10, I saw the play on Broadway. My family and I were in the second row from the middle of the stage. This is the day that I fell in love with Stephanie Mills, wow what a great, wonderful and classy woman. Fast forward I'm 56 now and still in love with this woman.
My sister and I met her on a Festival At Sea Cruise a few years ago. She had performed during the voyage. We were waiting to disembark on the last day and she strikes up a conversation with us. She was so cordial and sweet -just a JEWEL of a person! As we were parting, she turned back around and gave us a heartfelt goodbye.
I had the original Broadway LP of The Wiz. Stephanie Mills is Dorothy at 11 years old. About 10 years ago I saw it on stage. Grace Jones played the wicked witch. I had the opportunity to meet her at a local restaurant. She is super sweet!

I still cannot believe the Wiz actually began Ms. Mills journey to becoming a pop music legend. Now this iconic finale will belong to Shanice Williams as NBC presents the Wiz Live on NBC with Ms. Mills as Auntie Em! I sure cannot wait for the night
Lea Jones I know what you mean. I thought she would be but I guess seeing the rehearsal video of her performing Home with Shanice Williams, I was wrong
My god shes breath taking. I don't choke up and cry much but she did it to me with this performance. Talking about a little girl with a big voice. No one can sing this song like her, NO ONE! If shes not apart of the NBC production that is showing in Dec. 3 then I'm going to be mad as all hell.
I remember this well, seeing the how with my girlfriend and her daughetr...laughing at my Aunt Clarice's performance as Addapearl and meeting the wonderful cast.
I'll never forget, I was 15 years old and seeing The Wiz was my very first Broadway show at The Majestic Theater in NYC. I remember crying as Stephanie sang Home. There was something ethereal about her voic,e it permeated every crevice of that theater and echoed for days in my head. Just BEAUTIFUL, and the icing on the cake, I met her backstage and she signed my Playbill magazine. Still one of my fondest memories almost 50 years later.
I had the opportunity to see this original production in 1976, third row from the stage, the ticket cost $13.00!! Not a typo, thirteen dollars is all I paid! The ticket was available because another tour that was supposed to visit New York at the same time couldn't make it. Myself and two college classmate scooped the tickets!!

Stephanie sang her but off. She still had those pipes when she sing this song as she got older. It's a shame she didn't get her recognition back then. I see she was doing her hair and makeup to. The amount of talent she had at 19. Beautiful would love to of seen her perform live.
Tonys aren't awarded for a song. That's the Grammys. Or even a singing voice. It's an acting award and they for whatever reason didn't find her performance as a whole worthy. I can't say, because I didn't see it or see the performances of the actors she was up against.
What a showstopper!!! One time when I saw this show (one of many times) Miss Mills slipped and fell during the Everybody Rejoice number. She wasn't in the next scene(where they return to the Wiz) and we in the audience were really concerned. But, trooper that she is, she returned to the stage and finished the show wearing a brace on her ankle-just like the one in this clip. I wonder if this is the same performance I saw. I saw this show, believe it, 17 times from 1975 to the closing night in 1979. On closing night Miss Mills had to sing Be A Lion twice because the audience wouldn't let the show go on until she did. She also sang Home twice. What a star she is!!! Antonio, would you ask Miss Mills if she remembers this?
I'll never forget this magical magnificent performance and song by the one and only Bklyn own my home Stephanie Mills my childhood memory. And I will always love you . Ang
I am so in love with this production. I watched her from age 13 learning it and then was blessed to be cast in the role in our cities community theater. NOW I own a theater company and we are doing again after 37 years and I get to work with a new Dorothy, and my director from when I was Dorothy is consulting with me. I am SOOOO EXCITED!!!
Thank you for sharing this with me. I was too young to see the original when it came out and I so pray for a real revival someday. Nothing will ever compare to the original but I think it will spark interest in people going back to find the Original and the best Dorthy in The Wiz, Miss Stephanie Mills! I appreciate this I also enjoyed her performance of the song on the Soul Train Awards recently I wish I could find that again! The play is a classic and the Original Broadway version is my favorite. This video actually let's me just imagine what it would have been like to see this play in person and if I could purchase it on DVD I would. Again thanks so much for this!
Hey David, Thanx for appreciating this video and the Broadway play "The Wiz". I have her Soul Train performance uploaded as well. Are we friends on Facebook?
To have seen the Wiz initially on Broadway during the 70s was an amazing experience. Just blows you away with memories. Remembering Ken Page's solo still makes me cry. Then growing up and realizing Luther Vandross wrote the closer...just a magical time. Stephanie, Andre...💜💜
Luther's song was written for the movie. It is not in the Musical. All the music and lyrics for the musical are written by the brilliant Charlie Smalls.
I loved Stephanie Mills in this play that i saw when i was a young child . Ertha Kitt acted in the play as well .I got an audigraph from Ertha Kitt after the play , backstage.
Wow I think this is the show I was at when I was in 3rd grade. She had tripped on one of the characters sticks and twisted her ankle. Came back and finished the show like a champ 🖤🖤🖤
I was lucky enough to actually see this Broadway show back in 1976, in Chicago, though Stephanie Mills wasn't in it. I was 8 years old and one of my teachers, Michael Morris, took me to see it. I remember him telling me that he knew Andre DeShields, who was part of the original cast, but I don't think he was in the production I saw, or I probably would have been taken backstage to meet him. I love Stephanie Mills and still listen to her song, PUT YOUR BODY IN IT, from 1979, among others.
The ushers would have had to carry me out because I woulda lost my WHOLE mind!!!
I did. And 46 years later she still gives me chills.
They would’ve been carrying me and you together LMMFAO 😢😂🤣😭 As a matter of fact they would’ve had to lock 🔐 US up in an Insane Asylum until after the show….Lol 🤣🤣

She sings the brakes off of this song! That “it’s real, it’s real, its real to me” part takes me out every time. ❤️❤️🔥🔥🙌🏽🙌🏽
Me too!!!
That's the line that always gets me. This song was written from the HEART.

How does someone so young have that voice?! UNBELIEVABLE! I cried just listening to this!

@Robert Lee, Countertenor doesn't matter, she still had that voice in the original Broadway production a decade earlier.
@Robert Lee, Countertenor Actually she couldn’t have been 27 because if she was 30 in the 1992 revival she had to be younger than 27 in this.
@@stephaniemills_fanpage Nope. She was 27 here. By 1992, she was 35.

Stephanie sang her but off. She still had those pipes when she sing this song as she got older. It's a shame she didn't get her recognition back then. I see she was doing her hair and makeup to. The amount of talent she had at 19. Beautiful would love to of seen her perform live.
DAMN STEPHANIE MILLS TORE THAT SONG UP SO DAMN GOOOOOOOD
HOW DID SHE NOT WIN A TONY FOR THIS?! LIKE SERIOUSLY HOW??!!
Tonys aren't awarded for a song. That's the Grammys. Or even a singing voice. It's an acting award and they for whatever reason didn't find her performance as a whole worthy. I can't say, because I didn't see it or see the performances of the actors she was up against.
This footage is incredible. I love it. Thank you so much for posting. Stephanie at 16. What an ordained talent.
AMEN.. 🕊 🕊. What A Voice.
Took my 3 little ones to witness her live on Broadway in the 70's ... We were awed. I still am! Amazing!
Amazing talent! I love seeing this. I heard that at the final performance, they were crying on stage saying goodbye to Dorothy.
Saw this show 3 times. She was amazing and still is
I saw this wonderful play in Detroit at The Fisher Theatre. Glad I was a part of history.
My mom took me to see this when I was a little girl. I asked my mom who she was, and I’ve loved her ever since. ❤
What a showstopper!!! One time when I saw this show (one of many times) Miss Mills
slipped and fell during the Everybody Rejoice number. She wasn't in the next scene(where they return to the Wiz)
and we in the audience were really concerned.
The first time I have ever felt chills throughout my entire body.
I saw Stephanie Mills as Dorothy in the 1993 touring version of The Wiz. Wow! Hearing her sing "Home" was a transcendent experience.
I'll never forget this magical magnificent performance and song by the one and only Bklyn own my home Stephanie Mills my childhood memory. And I will always love you . Ang
Love it! This was back when they didn't use microphones.... so that's all her projecting to the back of the last row.
That is completely false. Mics were used on Broadway since the 1950s and body mics since the 1960s.
The song " Home "shall always be the birth child of Mrs. Stephanie Mills. Always and Forever
This brought back so many memories of a wonderful time gone by - SHE IS STILL PHENOMENAL EVEN TODAY
Oh, man... lost it when she hugged the Lion.... ;)
Ms. Mills you did a great job love you forever
The best rendition!
I remember seeing her in this play in Chicago. She did an excellent job.
I cry every time I hear this. Her voice and this song is just amazing.
I saw her do it at the Majestic theater on Broadway!
You better sang Stephanie....that's what I miss, when you're in your zone can't nobody touch you
Wow I think this is the show I was at when I was in 3rd grade. She had tripped on one of the characters sticks and twisted her ankle. Came back and finished the show like a champ 🖤🖤🖤
One word: Chills!
Thanx for this post giving us a bit of ur history and for still being there supporting Ms. Mills' talents. Definitely appreciate you.
+Victor Antonio Mr. Antonio are you excited to see Stephanie in the Wiz Live this December?
I cannot express just how excited I am.
Victor Antonio I am too! You should be lucky to work with someone as legendary as Ms. Mills
