As said there, i would also recommend cutting your grass as tall as you can, to let plants thrive insect, even let some part of your garden wild. yes you will not have gold green but it will much healthier for the plants, insects and birds and it also help keep the soil humid in summer and not dead frozen in winter for those little inhabitants of the grass.

Beekeeping wasn't foreign to the Americas though. In Mesoamerica people kept hives of stingless bees of the genus Melipona rather than Apis. Bees play a large role in Maya culture especially. The problem is that there are several differences to European and African honey bees. One being their hives are shaped differently and harder to harvest. They are kept in open logs at house facades to my knowledge. Their honey and wax yield is also lower. Sadly many give up traditional bee keeping due to economic reasons though.
Idk if it is possible for the industry to switch to those local species, especially since in theory at least the melipona bees are similarly semi-domesticated. In Australia people try to utilise native bees, which have never been kept before.

There are some groups in Mexico that have historically harvested honey from Mexican Honey Wasps (Brachygastra mellifica), though they've never been domesticated. They don't really produce much honey, either. Just thought it was interesting, considering how common they are in Southern Texas.
