I spent the last hour Googling. I first searched for "TMS 8.8". That returned a Grade 8.8 Metric Bolt. I then Googled "Iodized Salt Used In Metallurgy". The salt prevents or reduces the formation of bubbles in water used in the quenching process. Thus cooling more uniformly and reducing oxidation. Now I'm confused! A grade 8.8 bolt is already hardened from the factory. I would think that our guy would want to heat and slow cool prior to machining and then harden it as he did in the video but only after turning it. Also, not sure but is iodized salt beneficial over plain salt in this application? BTW: I love how he eccentrically turned the bolt (in a 3 jaw chuck) to form a Boring bar. Quick and simple! Wakodahatchee Chris
this is bullshit, these bolts are made of medium carbon QT steel - if this is not fake, it works just because he grinded right angle and machines some unalloyed low-carbon steel at low cutting speed while re-grinding tool mid-machining.. well might work on aluminum or black plastic, not for cutting anything harder - this way he spent less than 20 seconds in-cut and tool edge is already dull
@@adamsevcik7708 I make a point of not giving lip service to Indonesian machinists. Their world is totally different than mine and probably yours. The work these guys do and the range of skills they have are exceptional. They have to be because their little village depends on shops like this one to keep things running. @@adamsevcik7708 I didn't notice any claims about this tool being able to cut anything other than the big aluminum nut he made. Even so, the Class 8.8 bolt he used is a medium carbon steel that is usually sold in fastener form already hardened, then tempered back to a specific toughness. Heating and quenching a class 8.8 bolt will almost certainly increase its hardness a significant amount, although certainly not like a tool steel alloy.
There is an easier way, find carbide cutter inserts and solder them onto the cutter. If there are no such plates (and they are almost everywhere, for old brazed cutters), then they can be found in concrete drills, or in extreme cases, use a quick cutter

Nice work. Being creative with little resources can sometimes get you out of a jam when you don’t have the materials. Was that just salt in the water or something else to case harden the steel? I would think having enough carbon in the steel helps with hardening. Still enjoy seeing hands on skills at work
If you case harden the steel by packing it in leather scraps and bone charcoal and cooking at cheery red heat in a sealed iron box for 4 to 12 hours before quenching in water. The easy way is to buy some Cherry Red and follow the instructions. Heat the steel red hot and dip it in the Cherry Red a time or two, then heat it, quench, and temper the steel. In spite of what some say here case hardening can make good tools. It will prevent mild steel punches from galling when enlarging wire spools, increasing their life from 8 to 60 hours. I have used them to make tooling for production od Aluminum parts in aircraft factories,

Really. Heating steal depending on the temperature either tempers are hardens the steal. Salt increase the boiling point of the water. Which has nothing to do with harder metals cutting softer metals like aluminum. In short, you can grind tool steel to make tools without the fire and water show.
This is what is called economically and ecologically good. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
