How to make a stirling engine

- I tried to make a Stirling engine as simple as possible, but it was still difficult. Stirling engines are not easy to make.
List of materials:
- candy drops tin (00:03)
- piece of thin aluminum sheet (00:16, 10:12, 14:22)
- thin aluminum bar (01:58)
- cyanoacrylate glue (02:07, 06:20, 13:00)
- steel wool (02:25)
- silicone rubber (03:39, 20:58)
- 32mm tube (05:16, 06:16)
- two strips of galvanized steel (or copper, or brass) (07:10)
- solder tin (07:24)
- thin malleable steel bar (or wire) (08:08)
- pencil (12:06)
- small balloon (13:34)
- bolt, two nuts and two washers (14:15)
- electrical connector (17:00)
- two large lids (19:17)
- masking tape (19:38)
- lubricating oil (21:32)
Tools:
drill, drill bits, scissors, pliers, screwdriver, soldering iron, sandpaper, hand saw, pocket knife, pin, marking pen.
This is probably the most likely successful stirling engine build you could attempt from TH-cam videos. No words spoken or numbers to deal with, just good, plain physical instructions.
Just watch this one also, far superior build th-cam.com/video/EGzAyeKeNB8/w-d-xo.html
Imagine trying to make an internal combustion engine in your kitchen. Zero chance of that. Its incredible how imprecise a Stirling engine can be and it will still operate.
I mean at it's core it's pretty simple
@@call_me_mado5987 ⚠️ God has said in the Quran:
🔵 { O mankind, worship your Lord, who created you and those before you, that you may become righteous - ( 2:21 )
🔴 [He] who made for you the earth a bed [spread out] and the sky a ceiling and sent down from the sky, rain and brought forth thereby fruits as provision for you. So do not attribute to Allah equals while you know [that there is nothing similar to Him]. ( 2:22 )
🔵 And if you are in doubt about what We have sent down upon Our Servant [Muhammad], then produce a surah the like thereof and call upon your witnesses other than Allah, if you should be truthful. ( 2:23 )
🔴 But if you do not - and you will never be able to - then fear the Fire, whose fuel is men and stones, prepared for the disbelievers.( 2:24 )
🔵 And give good tidings to those who believe and do righteous deeds that they will have gardens [in Paradise] beneath which rivers flow. Whenever they are provided with a provision of fruit therefrom, they will say, "This is what we were provided with before." And it is given to them in likeness. And they will have therein purified spouses, and they will abide therein eternally. ( 2:25 )
⚠️ Quran
@@call_me_mado5987 so is an internal combustion engine, but much tougher to make on your kitchen with garbage and simple tools.
@@CRuM770 Yeah, in theory it's simple.
In practice?, it's never simple.
Engines are very complex there are a wide variety of them, some simpler than others and some more complex
@@call_me_mado5987 agreed, but the same applies to sterling engines. I saw a 10 cylinder unit with electronic timing control. I have also seen a one cylinder gas engine with mechanical valve and spark timing. It was about as simple as the engine in this video. Very interesting engine, it didn't spark on every revolution so the rpms would fluctuate. If I recall, it was for a compressor.
The "graphite lubricated sleeve" is a stroke of genius! Thanks!
Bravo… excellent, well presented and for myself I feel it was done in a manner any language could understand… thank you indeed, much appreciated!!!
All ideas are so simple that I can make it for my grand son. Thanks a lot for the video mu friend. Thank you.
Не сделаешь и работать не будет.
the is really really incredible i was strugling to understand the stirling engine now you just made it clear to me i thank you from the bottom of my heart
@alexanderwardrope9352 what I'm trying to say is that this video helped me to understand Stirling engine
the most easy to make I ever seen.
the beautiest (the cleanest) too.
well done!
One of the best tutorials out on youtube!! Thanks man!
Good vid. It hopefully accomplishes two things. First, inspire others to get started tinkering with Stirling engines. Second, to dispel the myth of current state of the art DIY Stirlings accomplishing any useful work for any practical power input level. A whole new paradigm is needed to make them practical as prime movers. Even when the input energy is "free" (solar heat, ground or evaporative cooling, etc) the cost of implementation and the replacement of moving parts make a small diesel engine look pretty good. That has got to change, and only the DIY hobby community can afford to "waste" the time and resources for the R&D required. A hobbyist has got to start somewhere. Part of finding out what works is finding all the things that do not work. Being able to construct a running heat engine in a half hour out of mostly just trash is a good foot in the door. Your design is simple enough for a reasonably smart 12 year old to follow, and it will teach him a little bit about the Stirling cycle.
This got me building.....
Well stated
Gonna build one right now.... got everything needed. Thanks.
When you put the ice on top I finally realised how it works.
Magic!
Have you done it?
@@Alin-bz3go I did. I had forgotten about it. It worked
Excellent video, thanks for sharing.
Very minimalistic, yet very informative.
Great build and you have a lot great comments from around the world. Keep improving and keep up the videos.
Já cheguei deixando o like, o Mestre Foguista merece!
Clever design. Nice use of found materials.
Ótimo vídeo Parabéns muito bom isso 👍
always a brilliant work!
Muito bom o seu trabalho.
i think the can you chose was too small in height, the air not expanding enough to cool down on its own. That rubber balloon as an air mixer is brilliant.. can't wait to attempt and make one myself.
I thought the same about the size of the tin, but a longer tin would probably require more energy.
@@TheCompleteGuitarist Also applies to all videos i watched about Stirling engine... The piston only move up/down depending on the crank shaft. most they make it not long enough to allow a cooling phase. Hot/Cold differential can increase efficiency of the engine. I wish i had space in my apartment to craft something to show all what i mean.
@@samina7670 i am looking to make this and i definately will have it longer
Nice, ❤very good project🇧🇷😉👍👏👏👏👏👏
Excellent video project sharing like it ☺️
Wow!!Amazing.Always want one but cant afford.Going to surely build my own.
You are a very clever man to thought of this. The baloon and steel wool is an wonderful idea.
Great ingeneering solutions.
If one take how large the fly wheel it was actually moving quite fast!!!
I LOVE IT I LOVE IT.!!!
Awesome man!!
Adorei, simplesmente fantástico 👍❤️
Abraço aqui do Brasil 🇧🇷
Combustion externe amigo !
You tube just recommended your channel to me. I really like your creativity!👨🏻🌾😋
22:51 some things I see that could be improved, first your flywheel is well off balance, and second I think there is some lateral play in the main crank, maybe add some spacers where the screw is?
The guy is making an engine out of stuff he found in his home, i think he did pretty for that
I've taught physics at summer camps. Students are motivated when they make a device that works better than the example that the teacher made.
This design is excellent for teaching _because_ there are so many opportunities to improve it.
genius design!!
Outstanding and simple
Impressive nice job 👍🏼
These are fun. I made mine from sterling silver because of silvers amazing heat transfer properties.
Try to use gold. It's even better.
@@LeoLeoJR You must not know much about conductivity.
The most beautiful motor ever see. Sir entender
Parabéns. Hoje entendi como funciona.
So unique project. Y are super talente my friend 👍💫💪
Bravo my guy, what a beautiful video❤
That was awesome.. I Enjoyed just listening to it run.. haha Good Job
Merci beaucoup pour la vidéo
Wow just simply amazing 👏
Thank you for the video!😜👍♥

That was a fun little project, i like Sterling engines. Thanks for sharing. 😀
Nice work.thanks
Pior que funciona 😂
Muito bacana 👏👏👏
Well Done Sir!
17:09 ~ 😬⚠️, just undo the screws to remove the metal block from those electrical screw terminal blocks, no need to cut open with a knife and risk cutting your hand
caraca, a tesoura do maluco cortar tudo. rs que idéia genial, será que se colocar duas latas, uma do lado da outra, fica mais potente?
thank you!!!
Very good! Simple!
coolest thing ive ever seen
made his but added a counter weight and a 10lb flywheel and after a few minutes of spinning to get in started it finally worked!.....and by worked i mean it ended up working too well with the heavy fly and the comparatively super lightweight parts that it literally tore itself apart after 30 secs of running. AMAZING! i love this will recreate!
Very nice very impressed thank you
I did not understand that nut bolt technique is there any go through hole?
Superb
play at 2x speed...save time. good project :)
Incredible
The simplest video I've seen so far 👍
Will be perfect fit for working on my project that I described in the video
Solar to electricity 24/7 in Your back garden
Videos like this make other projects so much better 🙂
Seus vídeos são da hora ! ..Mas os que eu mais gosto são os de mini armas .., isso tem haver com o seu canal ! .É like também
I advise you to turn on the 2x speed
Great video!! Would it work better if you cut some holes in the displacer disc to let more air flow through the steel wool?
What can i replace the steel wool with?
I dont have strel wool can i use steel scrub instead?
Fantastic
This 25 min was worth in my life

Nice
Poderia trazer o famoso fogão a diesel? Obrigado!
nice . now do this oil burner blue flame ..flue with copper 5mm coiled inside of the flue with two outlets at bottom to run to 5 gal drum with water pump hot water.all sealed. run this off to v8 sterling engine ro refurbed motors to provide elec?
ما مدى الاستفاده منه حاليا فى هذا العصر والكهرباء؟ برجاء الرد للعلم /مع الشكر
Not used much at all, my grandad has one that powers a lightbulb and charges batteries (slowly) using focused sunlight
Im a final year electrical engineering student..I imagine going straight infront of the panel with an opening statement "I'm going to show you how to charge your phone only using a candle" ...b4 introducing this starling engine and a dynamo connected to it🔥🔥🔥😂....do y you think it'll be great for my project..I think it'll be great 🤷♂️😎💯
Funtastic engine

may I ask the length for the galvanized steel?
Happy to subscribe
Would love if you make one a little more bigger/elaborate with a USB charger.
Impressive! Why is the part with the baloon segment and its connection to crank shaft needed?
How do the ice cubes help?
Brilliant!..... one for the grandkids during the summer school break I think!😊

Can someone tell how to make the crankshaft exactly and if the weight of the flywheel matters?
👍
Interesting
Can sponge be used instead of tin wire?
Good good good 👍
❤
Very good, no horrible music, irritating faces and voices. As expected, a few comments from the engine wizards out there at no it all ltd.
what is the grey thing he rols on the rod
How to work this engine
Maybe if you use a better heat source it will work better
High end YT content.
3:34 que pegamento es????
what's that wool like thing
Steel wool
Welcome to 500N Sub! 🌹❤✋👍
♥♥♥♥♥♥
You've put the steel wool on the wrong side, it must be on the side you heat, not on the one you cool down.
why?
What type of Stirling engine is this? Alpha, Beta, Gamma??
💚❤💚
Для герметики можно на шарик резинку одеть
The question is, why hasn’t a car or kart ever been built that operates on the stirling principle? It could even have electric coils for the heat source.

@@pa_maj.MARTINI-van-MAN Check this out! th-cam.com/video/KbnGlcQiL1c/w-d-xo.html
@@pa_maj.MARTINI-van-MAN it appears that it’s already been accomplished, just not on the market as the video seems to imply?
@@boomstick4054 True, and many times great ideas/inventions end up being deliberately put on the backburner. The energy companies love taking our money no mater what they say. Record profits while we all suffer.
@@pa_maj.MARTINI-van-MAN 75 horsepower, no oil changes because it runs so clean. Burns diesel or gasoline cleanly, cool exhaust. No muffler. Only 1 spark plug to ignite the burner. These engines that NASA developed & tested in airforce base vehicles/taxis are the answer. They aren’t high performance engines, but would be great just for a normal drive. 15-55 mph roads
Hay
The steel wool adds quite some weight to the piston. Couldn't you glue it to the top of the cylinder instead, for the same effect?
The steel wool acts as a recuperator as the air passes from the lower to the upper cylinder and back. So the air has to pass through it, that's why its on the piston.
Já tentou fazer um fogareiro a gasolina para esse motor?
