    This is a very high quality classic billhook style machete, manufactured in Italy for the German company Helko.
    The billhook style of machete is a classic and versatile design, capable of clearing brush, cutting branches and saplings, de-limbing branches, digging, carrying, pruning, cutting down fruit, and many other uses. Some billhooks are just for the garden, but this Helko Billhook is strong and durable enough (1.4 pounds) for the wilderness.

    In my virile youth, I had a side business trimming coconut trees. I copied the samoans and used a cane knife. That was too dangerous, all that close quarters flailing and glancing blade misses. I developed a hookknife similar to this blade. I welded a socket to the spine and installed a shortened axe handle. This blade made me thousands of dollars over 15 years of weekend side jobs. A coconut palm frond is pithy and has fibrous tendons that when Knicked just right, would let gravity do most of the work of peeling the stubborn frond away. I could remove fronds, flower pods, coconut bunches, fabric and shape the remainder into a beautiful looking tree with no tooling marks. All that with one tool. I was able to easily keep up with the professional Polynesians due to the efficiency of this billhook blade.

      I miss my virile youth. Time has take it from me forever! But yes, this is a great Billhook, nothing that meets that inner curved edge is going to escape.

    Cool machete! The Billhook has been around for hundreds of years, and was commonly used by peasants during the Middle Ages as an agricultural and forestry tool, designed to trim tree branches, prune grape vines, and other uses. Of course that variation of it was a polearm, used to reach high branches and vines in trees.
    It was actually one of the most common weapons used by peasants to fight off knights, both domestic and invading knights. It was used to hook around the plates of armor, and pull a knight down on foot, or off horseback. It was no doubt the predecessor to the Halberd, or any other number of polearms used in the Middle Ages.
    It is cool to see a company that makes Billhook machetes. I know they do over in England, but I'm surprised to see a German country does, considering the Germans do have a lot of limiting knife legislation. But there are always profits to be made by exports ;)

    Sorry for my English (I'm using the google translator) That's a rocola model "Bergamo", not just to prune the small branches, if used properly quell'atrezzo them, it can easily substitute a hatchet and break down, without much effort trees also of 12/15 cm. in diameter with a few well-aimed blow not on the curve of the blade, but in the central part of the same, and can, be used to split pieces of wood 10/12 cm without making batoning.
    Is used here im Italian hundreds of years, I have used some of that my grandfather was born in 1889 rip still perfectly funzionaznti and sharp, I like to restore them

    I like the respect that every blade gets in this channel. Some less skillful reviewer could end up just trying to destroy the blade for not understanding the design and thinking that is overall too weird but not here. Every time you bring zombies I am laughing my ass dude.

    I knew this one was made in Italy when I saw it as they can be found in every hardware store or flea market in Italy and every farmstead or country cottage is equipped with at least one of them. A friend of mine's Grandfather could climb a large pine tree using two of these things. They are called "roncola" the Rinaldi brand being the most popular, in fact it looks like they are making them for Helko.

    Nice review. The beak also protects the edge if you strike towards the ground. One can also strike with the back and with the flat, nuts or tent pegs or...one can treat the stacked leather with Linseed oil. Draw cutting with the hook is very good if the brush is thick.

    That machete structures similar to "Arit Gede" in Indonesian farming tools. To prune or even cutting middle size branch or trees (10 cm in diameters). The hook shape especially to do the small task(making hole in coconut fruit, splitting/battoning log or bamboo).

    It may be interesting for you, that this a swiss "Gretl" (pronounced "Gratl"). (Original produced in Italiy for the swiss company Stiehl)
    An all purpose farmers tool in the alps also found in southern Germany and western Austria.
    The swiss used it also as weapon in the middle age wars. The hook was used to break the amor of knights.
    (Sorry for my english ;-)

    That looks like just the tool I need to carry in my truck at work. I'm a DOT supervisor in charge of road sign crews, and we have to clear a God awful amount of brush. Sometimes a bush axe is too clumsy getting honeysuckles from around signs, but a one hand blade like this would be just perfect. I like the way the Helko is made. I've also been looking at a British made Martindale. Bill hooks aren't that common here in the US as machetes, but they looks very useful.

      @karthimechify 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Lex5576 go ahead... a bill hook is about the only weapon that can chop, pierce, hook,pull, and break every thing... its also a powerful defence weapon, once u ave it to a razor edge, u will have the most lethal of all blades, way better than a kukri

    Definitely seems like a super easy and versatile tool! Only thing that's "bad" about it is that it may be hard to sharpen, but that could be easy enough to get around. Great review!

    The short quick pulling cut is what avoids all the flailing accidents. This only works on pithy, wet stuff like coconut palm fronds, bananna, ginger and soft vegetation. Small diameter Hard woody stuff is best cut on the bias with a swinging chop. A lot of finesse is required when cutting through different types of vegetation with a billhook. Different cutting methods for differing substances. Fun stuff. a cane knife with a hook on the spine is the best tool for qeneral all around clearing. IMHO

    Finally a woodsman pal review comming from a person who's opionions and reviews I trust!! The woodsmans pal is my first "real" machete I use it all the time have cut down way bigger trees with it then I thought I would be able to without too much effort. Can't wait. My only one gripe is the blade doesn't run all the way to the end of the machete side? Any reason for that? I am modifying mine as soon as I feel comfortable not to mess it up

    • @WeAllJuggleKnives
      @WeAllJuggleKnives  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joe Roy I re-profile them and sharpen them all the way to the end. I am sure there is a good reason for the un-edged part, like you can hammer things with it, but still I modify mine like you said because machetes should have commonality, all my other machetes have an edge that goes right to the end.

    If you like billhooks, check out the "Yuki Chopper" made by Silky Saws. Great Japanese made billhook that I've used in my own yard on several occasions. SKS-51 steel, nice rubber handle, full tang, comes with a nice sheath...it is a little pricy, but it's a sweet blade.

    I could have used this bill shaped blade to harvest pine boughs for a survival training over-night on Mt Baker. We needed them to shove into a snow platform at an angle to make a bed to lie on that would elevated us and insulate us from the snow. I was using a hand axe that slipped off a bough and caught my thumb. Several stitches later...I was ok...but the tool you demo'd is what would have prevented this injury in the first place.

    • @EattinThurs61
      @EattinThurs61 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Something like that happened to me once, the axe bounced off a bough, i have used a Billhook on Tuja, Juniper and American Hawthorn with good effect.

If you live in N.A. Baronyx is perhaps a better choice of vendor, if in €urope not. I myself have a Portuguese billhook make "Verdugo N00" "Azores" model, very nice but small (similar to Douro model). Serpe in French, Hippe in German, Roncole in Italian.
