Budget-priced machetes will almost always require extra work on your part in order to make them usable. When considering a budget-priced machete ($20 or less), there are three main factors to consider.
1) Do you need a sheath? If so, can you make or acquire a sheath of sufficient quality?
2) Can you replace, re-finish, or effectively wrap the handle of the machete, to make it usable?
3) Are you able to put an edge onto the machete by hand or by machine, or have access to someone who can do so?
This channel focuses on re-profiling and sharpening machetes and swords: / thebonecone

Aranyik, Machetes of Thailand: • Product Line Overview,...
Another great one! I've owned the meyerco for years and for a Stainless Lowend chopper it is one of my "go to" tools. Its saved my backside several times. Lovin this series!! For most of north america the heavier machetes are the trick. The light ones are nice on light veg but fall short on hard woods. BRING ON #5!!
For chopping you want a heavy machete - Golok, E-Nep, or Kukri style. Best brands would be Aranyik and Condor for those.
Stainless steel tends to chip and break more, if used in long machetes, swords, or topheavy choppers like tomahawks. 420 SS is sometimes used by Condor, but their 420 machetes are all very flexible, so they won't break. I'm not familiar with the Allen Machete though, except from seeing it in pictures, so I am not sure about that one.
FYI, Machete Specialists sell these Imacasa machetes (and a big ol mess of others) and they also have sheaths specially made for each one. That panga (Imacasa Burriquito) has a very nice special sheath, check em out!
Glad you like the vid! I'm not sure, seemed like you described either a tanto tip or a Seax type.
I've used a half-round bastard file to sharpen both Cold Steel and S. American machetes to a decent "machete edge". I use mine both for yard work and on-trail fire prep. and shelter construction. Of course it's there for defense if needs be. Good video on a nice selection of cheap tools.
I have used a very large 30 inch 6 inch wide tip, The end had a sharpened hook . You could reach under a rosebush with that hook and just give it a sharp pull. never seen one like it . That one was also lost .Have you ever seen one like that? it was awesome .and yes a 3-4 inch hickory wouldbe leveled 1 or2 hits .
They do! For good prices, too.
Sharpening a new machete is half the fun!!! All you need is a good flat file...
It's nice to have an expert make a video. Thanks. I'm looking for something to clear my path while walking through the woods.
Duuude! 5 cuts on one bottle?! You tha man, Israel. You tha man!
(Love this series! Very nicely thought out and informative!)
Your videos are a great help. I'm about to make a machete purchase and now I know a lot more info to make a decent buy.
Ever made/considered to make you own blades. It's getting quite popular and isn't to difficult.
I have 3 machete . 1 is cut to shape chain saw bar. The second is a lawnmower blade the third is a disk blade. The chainsaw bar is the best. The disk blade will chop concrete and still hold a edge but is to heavy lawnmower blade is also heavy . The chainsaw bar took 15 minutes to make and holds an edge great. I made it when I was 13 , i am now 50 and still use it
I love Condor Machete's and knives, but the handles can be a bit hard and smooth. Hockey stick or Racket tape is great. But think about where you will be using your tool. Hot and wet, I'd go with Racket tape. Cold and dry, Hockey. Just a thought. As for handles, some will need work, some wont. Edges, depending on the thickness of the blade 22 to 24 degree's is best. Very sharp but not delicate like say a 20 degree edge. A heavy thick machete might even be better with a axe grind.
I bought a 10-12 dollar military surplus machete meant to be used in light vegetation and such, its a great machete and does its job great. (wooden handle gives you a blister now and then)
Nice vid. I'm looking forward to the next one I must say. As there are not awfully many bang sticks here in the UK, if things ever turn unpleasant, I reckon machetes will be one of the "defensive measures" of choice. Basically, we'll go all medieval on each other, lol.
This a cool and diffrent set of vids. Love your channel, and one benefit is that you do diffrent stuff than the rest.
In central america its done with a 3 corner file no problem a good everyday machete cost around ten dollars like your thoughts on it though keep it up very informative
That's the one, I am waiting for it to go on sale again, I have it in my cart. The day I went to purchase it was the day the sale had ended. I'll get it for sure next time. Thanks.
My oldest machette was 21 inches. Cutting vines it sang till it hit a sapling and bounced like a spring. Kneeling I would get flipped over as it caught on ground. Wife in laughter destroyed my macho. I now use a chance in hell and stay on my feet. More stout on wood!
It is very light, even lighter than the other Imacasa of the same length (the one with handle guards).
I'm enjoying this machetes series.
For your other machetes like the Cold Steel or Condor machetes, do you use a different type of sharpening. The reason is that I have a Cold Steel cutlass machete, and I am trying to get it near razor sharp. So I am, just wondering, what brand and type of sharpener would you recommend?
I use the same type for all, however, my Cold Steel Cutlass Machete did not need any sharpening out of the box.
wierd question: which one/s would be best for zombie survival gear?
Carbon Steel. If it is a heavy machete, 5160 is good. If it is a lighter machete, high to mid carbons are ok.
Thats why I like M-TECH,you get a good machete for a cheap price. Its less flimsy then those ones as well. But I'm not sure if its kydax?
Finally someone who knows about machetes thanks friend that was great
Cool, I've used the file on my Leatherman as a honing steel, too.
Can't wait for machetes 5! Just ordered the Imacasa Guarizama Machete, hoping it will be a much cheaper alternative to satisfy my lust for a Cold Steel Marine NCO Saber lol.
Update my sheaf isn't kydax, its kind of like those black machete sheaf's you were showing eccept it has a thick rim stitched all around it with those little metal almost like solid button gromit thing. Clamped at key points of the sheaf, but it works for me man.
Yes, it's even cheaper on Amazon sometimes though.
It has not yet come to pass!
Great overview. Very educational.
you should get a Tramontina Bolo :) mine is my favorite machete and I bought a marble's bolo sheath for it
Glad they help!
Nice series of machetes. On the sheaths. If you can live with canvas, Marbles makes one of the handiest style with pockets on the front. BTW, Marbles machetes are made by Tramontina, I think, and come really sharp.
The 28" Imacsa looks like a sabre. How does it really differ from an actual sabre? Lighter blade, different balance point, etc? I'm curious because I haven't had much experience with sabres and none if you exclude wall hangers.
You're better at cutting water bottles than most of the katanas wannabe on youtube
The truth about katanas, because of the handle, you can't swing a katana as fast as many other types of blade, so they're better for cutting people than for cutting bottles. The best katanas for cutting bottles are extra light and thin ... like a machete LOL. So I just usually use a machete. Or big knife.
Excellent!
i have an 18" tramontina, but my uncle said it was not worth it for 10$? he said it had a bad handle, bad steel, those sort of things... well, what do you think about a tramontina? do you think it's good and worth it for 10$?
Thank you
Wow a 28inch machete where do you one??
Maybe the Cold Steel Heavy Machete, its a sugar cane harvesting type machete, would look interesting flying through the air!
You forgot one of the best cheap machetes Tramontina
I typically make my own wooden scabbards for my blades. Imo you just cant beat oil treated wood covered in leather that is custom made & fit to that specific blade. No factory can match it unless they go super expensive.
I make leather sheaths for machetes, you got to have a sheath, that is half of the fun for fixed blades.
Always get or make a sheath, you will enrich the experience of ownership and collecting.
Dec 2024 revested this vid and the others associated with the collection
This bought some machetes and knives to build up my collection
having a lot of fun shopping, and yes, Budget Machetes is the ticket, my pref.
it sounds like a cheap horror movie tittle.
"MACHETE'S 5"
Thanks book name idea
Machetes 5: all the trimmings
If you had to get just one machete to do it ALL for less than $100, which one would it be?
Good Vid.
I have a Question.
Is the Cold Steel Jungle Machete good?
i know for myself i always like to put my own edge on all my blades i just take my time and start off with a file and then i just go to finer and finer stones till it turns up sharp enough to shave with, lol, just something i really enjoy and when you do it yourself it's something you can take pride in.
Man, nice looking group of blades.
Just curious, what kind of sharpener do you use to sharpen your machetes?
Ever try staining the wood handles? I just got through staining my 14'' tram a deep red mahogany and it looks amazing, walmart has a stain/polyurithane combo for like 7 bucks, you should try it out :)
I really enjoyed the video! I have one question to ask, I recently bought this old rustic looking 12 inch long blade Machete that is carbon steel and looks similar to yours you called a Jungle Machete. I bought it for cheap, but it has no handle so i'll have to make one. It has that flat tip that is on an angle upward and toward the tang. Just curious, do you know where these were common or possibly originated from. Also, could I send pic for advice on making a handle - thanks in advance!
What kind ofsteel do you recommend for a good machete
Probably the jungle machete, number 6 from the left, because it is long and heavy.
Thanks!
the reason many inexpensive machetes don't come with a edge is importation laws, many countries in europe and asia require blunt edges on any larger blades like axes and machetes.
Whats your opinion of the Gerber machete??
excellent!
It is great for the price
Machete Specialists online store, there's a link in the text box, enjoy :]
Cardboard and duct tape sheathes,,,I have used it several times, works great ...not only for blades
you can make a custom handle with a bicycle innertube and a hair dryer
You should try the Gerber gator
Thanks for the quick response. I was looking into the cold steel ones. The one that's around $30 looks good. Is this the same one??
thanks!
Que viva El Salvador!!👌🇸🇻👍👍
I went to the website in the description now im having having a swordgasm and singing songs that I don't know the names to
Yes it is worth it.
I see it looks damaging as well as pretty old school too might look into some of the gerber gear as well, modern tools would have much more durability i suppose to the elements
one of the Latins is a Tramontina
Thanks, I try!
in another video i told you about the cheaper than dirt deal i got 5 machetes for 11 bucks plus shipping which was to much.anyway 4 out of the 5 were gavilan machetes
Tell me about this deal
Yo, Imacasa is all available in Belize, I have 28" colima and latin
Thanks so much for a great video AND the comprehensive links! I was considering ordering a GreyEagle clip point Kukri machete. The only thing holding me back was stainless steel construction. I already have a stainless machete, and it just doesn't hold an edge. I still like the clip pint Kukri, and really wish someone produced it in 1060 or better steel, but they just don't. Through your links I found the retailer and the blade I eventually wound up ordering.... Machete Specialists, and I got the Imacasa 22" knuckle bow Chumpa. No sheath, but I think it will ride nicely, sans sheath in a frog. I think I will be very happy with it! Thanks again!
Excellent! I'm glad I helped!
BTW, You mentioned a "Machetes 5" vid, but I can't find that. As far as I can tell, the weapons pontential of a machete would be about the same as a naval cutlass.
Yeah I haven't made Machete 5, because TH-cam is all sensitive about being "family friendly" now LOL. But I think people can figure out the weapon uses of different machete shapes anyway, it's mostly common sense.
Well I suppose I understand. I can always check out ScholaGladitoria channel for the historical weapons that most resemble my machetes, at this point, cutlass and falchion. Anyway, Thanks again for the great videos!
A belt sander and then finish by hand with a stone.
Hello, I can't find part 5 of this series.
Thanks for the great content anyway.
I want to throw a machete. What one would you suggest that would withstand the punishment but is still cheap? Thanks.
can you please tell how flexible are the guarizama and sable machetes from imacasa. with all that length and just 2 mm thickness, they seem to be quite springy and wobbly.
They are quite flexible, just as flexible as typical latin machetes.
Would have been nice if you had showed off the Imacasa Barrigon machete and said something about it - length, thickness, weight/balance and handling. It looks like an effective shape.
your name isnt jason by chance, and you arent a hockey fan are you?
Do you also have a hockey mask and blue boiler suite like " Jason " Friday the 13th
Sort of, but that is in the Cold Steel Thai Cutting Sword Machete video.
Machetes 5 please
🤔🤔🤔💪💪💪
Nice video thanks
very nice !
I've just been watching people loosing their shit on Zombie Go Boom about the Ka-Bar Swabbie "zombie killer". From the looks of it, it's a large knife rather than a machete, but what are your thoughts on it in terms of usability/durability etc?
why would you want to avoid stainless steel?
DAMN , THATS ALOT OF MACHETES
Awesome!!
man i love these vids you are amazing
I hope you know how lucky you are.. Prices where im at are atleast dubble, then in the states. Think i could make my own machete or like for less then buying one retail would set me back =) and thats with a nice kydex sheath for my Creation, and it would be alota fun. Guess what im going to be doing at the family smithy this week =D
Say Heah Is, In my play ground, machetes are not as much. I prefer a Hatchet to process wood. But I do use a Machete type tool, a Summer Long Knife. I like my Woodsman Pal Primium with the Leather Handle and knuckle Guard. I still use my Military O. K. C. 18" Machete, I also have a Vintage Blackie Collins 22" Heavy Duty with the D-Ring Handle, I also have a Condor Golok and the vintage Jungle Saber, plus I have a Cold Steel vintage Double Edge Machete that I'm really liking. But my Fav's are my two, My Rodent Rucki and my Johnson Adventure Parangatang which I changed the handle to black, I like it alot better in black. F. Y. I. Is, the Swabbie and Zomstro handles fit my Parangatang and my Potbelly both are black now. I also have the Fox Hitam Golok and the Condor Wilderness Tool. I really like both, The Hitam Golok I teamed with my Fox Trekker Camp and Sniper Knife, A lovely piece of kit and my Condor Wilderness Tool I teamed it with my S. O. G. Seal Pup Elite TiNi. A nice Econo combo that I added my C. S. Double Edge Machete with. Oh, I almost forgot to mention my Bark River Bravo Golok and my B H Mad Hatter, Finally I had it reworked since when it came, it was around the Christmas Holiday and much desired. But now my Mad Hatter is exactly how I want it. Well the sheath is just OK. But Mad Hatter is in L6 and I like it. I had the Scandi worked on, the spine is rounded except for a spot that's 90° and the handle matches my Modified Attitude Knife a beautiful match. Yeah, I had my Attitude modified by lowering the Drop Point a high Scandi Grind and a White G-10 Handle with Blue Liners. So both match. I also have a set by Case, I teamed my Case Jungle Machete Knife with a Pawnee Fix Blade I posted some of these and your wc one to L@@K, Salamat.,,. p
are you going to do a video of the condor golok? it looks like a realy good chopper and cliff stamp`s video convinsed me to buy this item. i hope it does the same to you
/watch?v=H0e-Qi0yUQw
Did the 7th machete from the right come with that Gladius-like profile or did you apply that yourself?
It came with that shape, but I might have had to sharpen one side. There is a similar shaped machete now sold as "Hansa 18 Inch Peinilla Machete."
@@WeAllJuggleKnives would you recommend cold steel? I got a gerber. Darn thing is horrible. I basically paid for the ergonomics of the grip
Can you do a video on the Imacasa Burriquito machete?, since i cant find a video bout it on youtube
I'm surprised there's no cold steel in the list.
