  • This film was produced by:
    Physiotherapist Josef M Andersen (Denmark)
Member of The Mulligan Concept Teachers Association (MCTA)
Purpose: It is only to be used for educational purposes.
    Language: Danish, English text.
    Date: march 2013, Berlin.
This film illustrates an example of using mobilizations with movement (MWM/SNAG) in treatment of an acute LBP injury related to a sporting incident.
Techniques are slightly modified in relation to the original descriptions the concepts founder Brian R. Mulligan. Modifications can occasionally be done to accommodate a specific presentation. Mastering basic techniques is required as perquisite for any modification. In other words, this is not a cook book method of how to assess or treat clients with LBP.
The Mulligan concept of SNAG and MWM should only be used by qualified therapists who received formal education in The Mulligan Concept.
Formal education is only offered through teachers who are MCTA members.

The story short: A young athlete is injured during weight lifting, he lifted 120 kg. in squat that resulted in an acute LB injury. He was then filmed on two occasions day 2 and day 5 to illustrate the method. He did also receive three treatments by my colleague, who is a a Certified Mulligan Practitioner (CMP): she confirmed that he was only treated with SNAG S and general advise.
After the fifth session, he was able to return to sports with advise and exercise prescription. Gradual return over the next 1-2 months is warranted. He is expected to be at pre-injury level with two months since the fifth and final session.
Openion, In most cases, safe gradual return to sports should only commence after restoration of pain free cardinal movements. We commonly see that returning to sports too early after a major injury will only increase the risk of new injury and may result in much longer rehabilitation period.
The mulligan Concept is a powerful method to assist in achieving pain free ROM and normalization of movement patterns. It is safe when applied by a qualified practitioner. The method is pain free and client specific.
Other forms of therapy, exercise etc. should be considered on a case to case basis. The method should be supported with education and advise. It is crucial to adhere to the principles of MWM that where described by the originator Brian R. Mulligan (NZ) in his book, now at sixth ed. Manual Therapy, NAGS, MWM etc.
    Kind Regards
    Josef M. Andersen
