- After 15+ years of waiting, Apple is now allowing retro game emulators on their App Store, and after a few crash-and-burn releases, we have the first legitimate emulator app on the store. Today we're going to talk about Delta, show you how to set it up, and then highlight all of its many features (and a couple shortcomings, too).

Hey folks, thanks for watching. I misspoke in the beginning part of the video: the App Store restrictions apply to those in the EU, not all of Europe. If you are in the UK then you should be able to install the app no problem.
For the sound in the settings you can turn off respect silence mode and you can hear the game when your phone is in silent mode

True. But there is a reason why I still use the Vita, Switch and Steam Deck. All have different applications.
For example, there is something about playing PSP and Vita games as intended, so the Vita is still great for playing said games.
I reckon Delta would be nice to have to installed on the phone. Personally speaking, it won’t be often that I take other handhelds with me.
Man what a time to be alive. I remember all the trouble I went through back in 2009 getting gameboy games on my I pod touch. Gonna download this today.
I downloaded it last night after I saw your post. It’s surprisingly good! It won’t replace my dedicated retro handhelds, but it’s very good for when you have a few minutes to spare here and there.

I found your channel because for the brief 6 month window where I went back to iPhone I needed to know what handheld emulator to get because I couldn't play my Pokemon emerald ROM on my phone. Something like this could have saved me a hundred $ or so, so I'm glad it's now an option.
I'm kinda glad it wasn't back then though because your channel is very entertaining and informative and helped me a lot when I got a Steam Deck.

I literally downloaded the app and had cruising USA on it running less than five minutes !!!!
I remember having the Delta GBA emulator on my iphone back when you could download apps off of safari super easily, played fully through Metroid Fusion and had an ongoing pokemon Emerald save before Apple took it down. Glad to have it back!
Same here, the original GBA4iOS was great playing it on my iPod touch 3rd generation some 9 years ago. Extremely stoked this has been made official

There's still no JIT so you'll need your jailbreak for dolphin or play
Wii is a very old console so maybe in the future is supported. Psp is on the way to be supported
Jailbreak is still alive? I did it in like ios 11 and 13 but after that every time I checked people said it wasnt ready

As soon as I saw a single emulator on the app store in the past few weeks, I ordered a telescopic controller and soon went back to your channel- sure enough the community has already put out a polished emulator and frontend onto the iPhone- a great decision! Thanks Russ!
Having all my DS and Gameboy games from my childhood stored on my iPhone feels so cool. Emulation is awesome!
I can't wait to see what other emulators are possible on the iPhone. Patiently waiting for Dolphin, PPSSPP, and a PS2 emulator to eventually release.
I really just need a 3ds emulator for iphone since i already have dev mode on my series x for everything else
DolphiniOS and PPSSPP have been available on iOS for years. I’ve had PPSSPP since like the iPhone 4. They just needed to be sideloaded or you need a jailbroken phone. Ps2 or “play!” Has also been available for years but that one still has a lot of compatibility and speed issues.
@@pastiesandagstring just need it in the appstore, jailbreaking is irrelevant these days… apple will be forced to have secondary app stores so hopefully we will get those emulator apps soon
@@almightyshane there’s apparently a 3ds emulator in Development. Think it’s called limon or emuthreeds previously. Don’t know how far along it is though. I have an older iOS version and could only install an old version of the app and I couldn’t get games to appear in the emulator for me to actually test it.
@@pastiesandagstring that makes me feel so happy, i have yet to play ORAS or the 3ds version of Mario despite having a 3ds but i dont want to buy the cartridges, and i somehow cant successfully hack the system no matter how hard i try

My delta app was mute until I unchecked “respect silent mode” in in-app settings. Imo that’s is better for me the turning off silent mode on the iPhone itself.

I don't have an iPhone but as a big fan of emulation it's nice to see that if I one day do the transition to iOS, I could enjoy my games there too. More options is always good
IOS is garbo. If you use Android or PC and you move to IOS, you'll find that in IOS, nothing is done logically, there is only one way to do any particular action, AND you're paying extra for that privilege. The only thing Apple has going for it, is that while using IOS, you'll never learn the skills to use a real OS, and so you'll think IOS is easier.
It's not, it's more basic, and if you have skills with other devices, I don't see why you'd move to IOS.
Plus, Apple is the worst company for planned obsolescence.
@@Boogie_the_cat As someone who eventually caved and switched because of the social pressure of not having iMessage I agree. Was shocked how awful and unintuitive their file browser (can barely call it one) is. Biggest thing iOS has going for it are the proprietary services Apple gatekeeps, the fact that a lot of apps get updated on iOS first and run better, and the battery life is generally better (but it's still 1 day, you're not getting anything crazy) but you never feel like you truly own your device and have the same level of control you do even on a Galaxy.

@@Boogie_the_cat I had androids for close to 10 years and loved them, still do. I had never owned an iphone and so I switched out of curiosity. At first I felt the way you describe here but over time ive grown to like it a bit more. Ive had flagship galaxy devices and LG phones when they were around before and never have I gotten such good battery life performance on any android as I have with my iPhone. The build quality is also top tier and its not even got so much as a scratch or dent on it after 3 years. I was upset at first I couldnt access root storage but I learned to work around that. I used to pirate movies on my androids and watch them directly from it, now I still pirate movies but I stream them over plex which is way more convenient anyways.

As an iOS developer you can basically opt not to adhere to DMA and keep everything as it was before (so not publish to the alternative iOS stores, just keep all on the App Store). This DMA only applies for developers that intend to use alternative stores and/or alternative payments... But as always, Apple made it super hard to understand and that's why the most developers don't publish apps in the Europe... 😢
This is entirely Apple’s fault. It’s a completely arbitrary rule that prevents devs from putting apps in the App Store if they use an alternative store front. What reasonable justification is there for that?
Consumers lose out because they can’t get Delta in the EU store and they even have to charge customers who opt to use third party storefronts (AltStore PAL). Ridiculous
it is indeed ridiculous. But I don't think EU will leave it like this for very long. Devs like Epic that started it all will probably push through...

Another great one Russ. I will definitely give this a shot with my backbone controller. Although finally I pulled the trigger on rp4 pro, which arrived last week and i am having a blast with PS2. I became an expert with settings on NetherSX2. and every game i try, runs perfectly. I have you to thank for, been utilizing almost all your guides. Tnx man 🙏
Having said all of that, still waiting/hoping for a retroid pocket flip 2, as the first one, is my favorite device. I just need the power of rp4 pro inside it.
When you initially posted yesterday I downloaded the app 😂😅. I am a IPhone user and tho iPhone is always late to the features party its hard to leave the ecosystem. Im just happy that all my childhood games fit in my pocket again. The controller features are definitely a must. Im a DS kid and this emulator is the best ive seen while running it.

About the audio issue, you can also just turn off the “Respect Silent Mode” option in the settings. Audio will play without having to turn off silent mode.

This is the greatest thing and is going to open up emulation for so many people.

There’s an option in the app’s Settings menu labeled Respect Silent Mode. Turn that off and it’ll ignore that your phone’s ringer is off and behave just like any other media playback would.

Once we got a couple more official emulators on the App Store (assuming that we will) I would love to see an updated/redux version of your “IPhone as a retro handheld video” from a few years ago. That was the video that sold me on the potential of this and led me to buying a Backbone, and that was back when side-loading was still somewhat of a hassle. Awesome to see how far we’ve come and exciting for the future considering newer iPhones have some pretty powerful chips
The BIG thing that makes this great imo is the option for "sustain buttons". It basically inverts the buttons that you select. So you can sustain the B button so you can always run in Mario, and then pressing it down and unpressing it actually unpresses and presses so you can do things like throw fireballs. Feels really great to play like that cause you can run without using the button.

Oh man! This video came at the perfect time for me. I'm leaving for a short trip this weekend and didn't want to bring my Switch Lite with me, so I was gonna bring my Android phone to play some old games and now I'm using Delta (I've spent like 2 hours dropping my roms and stuff into the emulator) and I'm so excited!
I just got to see how much the battery of my iPhone will last, but it's definitively worth the effort. I couldn't even play regular DS games on my Android and now I can! I'll be testing it and maybe update my thoughts for everyone who's considering installing it. Thanks for the video and the instructions! Appreciate it!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but what is the reason the app isn't available in the EU apple app store? I'm pretty sure there aren't any costs just because someone lives in the EU if you put your app in the store, just like in all the other locations.
And hiding it behind a subscription for a "alternative app store" is a bit unfortunate to say the least.
Under the new dev terms they charge .50 for any free downloads in the EU
When you accept the new terms in the eu. Developers get charged each install per year. They have altstore already so might as well bundle them into the app.
I’ve ALWAYS been a SmartPhone hater when it comes to Emulation just because I didn’t want to go through a bunch of steps to side-load them.
This made it a BAJILLION times easier & better, now I have access to a bunch of Fan Translations that I haven’t before (I don’t have a PC & I have to buy
pre-made SD cards for my Retro Handhelds 😅)
I had so much fun just browsing through all the cool ROM Hacks that I’ve always wanted to try & it’s so easy to pair a controller & hook it up to my tv 😁
A cheap second hand laptop would be useful I think, it doesent have to be the latest and greatest but it helps to have one around

3:43 If you scroll down on the settings and look for “Respect silent mode” and turn that off, than you won’t have the problem with the audio not working.

Great vid! I’ve thus far kept my finger off the trigger of the handheld emulators because I just couldn’t justify it, but this is perfect.
I can’t wait to see what new apps will be coming out in the next few years now that Apple finally allows emulators. The future is looking good.
Delta looks like it definitely needs some organization improvements. All games for all systems in one directory is too overwhelming. ES-DE and retroarch need to get ported ASAP.
I am sure you can create folders for systems/Genre /A-Z if you choose.
I remember having to jailbreak my iPhone OG to play games, this is a much more elegant solution.
I couldn't care less about any emulators software or hardware that I'm not going to use or have interest in, but you are one of the few youtubers who are genuine and truly love what they do. And even fewer of the youtubers whose content is captivating I have had enough snacks and softdrinks this week so your next favorite snack and drink is on me. Keep up the fantastic work Russ. 👏

Already got Delta day one(and used to side load it). Still watching. Now just changed some artwork because I knew I would learn something new. It’s also fun to Airplay to a TV and use a controller and just have a multi Nintendo console
Thanks to your good self I have everything I could need on my Steam Deck, via Emulation Station, but as you say the phone is even more portable that the Steam Deck is and is with me everywhere.

After sideloading the app for years now it is such a relief to at least have this on my phone until Apple or Nintendo cracks down on the app. But until then I don’t need to reinstall any certificates or refresh the app, it’s just there. Which is such a freaking relief. And it makes casually playing retro games way easier for me when I get real busy.

Vita is my go-to handheld until SteamDeck 2 comes out but having these emu options on ios is awesome! Another reason to dust off my Backbone. Was so hyped to see Russ on this right away. Great video as usual!
Even then, the vita for me is my pocket handheld.

That's not quite right. Delta's developer could have released Delta for free in Europe if he wanted, but chose to put it on his AltStore.

The price will basically just pay for his costs. He wants to support the idea of his AltStore, which is fine.
We should thank him a lot, given that him starting a game emulator alt store is clearly part of what pushed Apple to complete and open up emulators on Apple's App Store.
It’s their product, they can charge as much as they want and considering they have to pay per download the price is ridiculously low. Making a fuss about €1.50 is absurd.
It's literally said in the video that Apple was gonna charge them ¢50/ download in eu even if it was free in the app store because of the developer terms. Altstore pal is what makes Delta possible in the EU.

It isn't greedy at all. It is mostly just covering the costs that Apple is charging the AltStore.
We should be thanking the AltStore, as it is obvious that Apple only changed their App Store policies because of the potential of the AltStore

If it is free in an "alternate app store", at least 50 euro cents will be charged per user per year for downloads/updates (to the alternate store itself, and again to the app developer if it is over 1 million downloads).
If it is free in the actual EU app store (like it is outside the EU), downloads would still be free to the developer.
Touch controls are gross.
Use an Xbox controller. Currently playing Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days with mine and it’s completely changed the game, metaphorically and literally speaking lol

One thing you missed in the video. I just plugged my iPhone 15 Pro into a USB-C/Thunderbolt Display and it put the game on the external display, provided power to my phone, and I could use the controller on the phone.
This was on an ultra wide LG display. Pretty dang neat!
I’m going to try it tonight on my Steam Deck dock to my 1080p TV and see if it charges AND works with the external display.

Just got this. I had resigned myself to never really playing the earlier handheld games (I have a 2ds but nothing earlier.)
I now have a decent gba and ds library and am playing Phoenix Wright for the first time and loving it!!
I'm personally an android user, but I think it cool that iPhone users finally can use emulators officially on their devices.
I think the best use case for me here is DS. I have a Miyoo Mini Plus for GBA mostly, and have used it for DS emulation before with pokemon games, but being able to use touch screen and have both screens visible in this format is definitely the best use case for me. I’m happy this is finally here

This app is incredible. So easy to use with an already existing cloud library.
I’ve been using it since release and honestly it’s very impressive. It’s easy to use, and set up. Only one thing keeps it from being near perfect, and that’s not having a full screen DS option. I’ve gotten so used to the format of DS emulation with a designated button to switch between top and bottom screens. I know they said that more systems are coming g soon (3ds would be crazy if they could have it working as smooth as DS, with the full screen/swap option).
You’re definitely right. I put all the games that looked interesting in the Nintendo Direct on my Steam Wishlist so I can play them on my Steam Deck. Solid coverage as always man!
For anyone who is having problems with the audio, click the cog in the upper left hand corner of the app (the settings) scroll down to game audio and there is a “respect silent mode” click the slider if to the off position. If you have your phone on vibrate or silent the app automatically is set to respect that setting.
Ipad users can use the built in zoom function in the accessibility options to have a better full screen experience on thier Ipads. Choose "Full Screen Zoom" in the region setting. Double tapping with 3 fingers zooms in and out. Triple tapping with 3 fingers opens a few options to tinker with including how much it's zoomed. Obviously it'd be better to just have a full screen option in delta but in the mean time hope this helps. 😅

its great that we have so many options to play retro games now. I will use this for basic games but i would rather use the retro handhelds at this point rather than any phone. by the time you add additional accessories your pocket or bag would be as big as just carrying a retro handheld.

Just switched back to iOS after trying and failing to be content with a Pixel, and now my biggest problem with the app store is essentially solved :D
