I noticed the chain incident as well when it happened. My assumption was; They never established that the dead "can't" go in water, just that they don't. Why? Logically speaking, the dead are most likely, not buoyant. The dead are made up of carcasses with holes in them. They also, most likely, have deflated lungs and are full of heavy fluids, instead of oxygen. The dead are also killed by fire as the White Walkers are only killed with dragon glass or Valyrian steel. I've notice people often merge the walkers and the dead as the same thing but they are not. The dead may be able to function under water within range of their controlling walker. Remember, We saw that when a walker is killed, it's controlled dead die instantly, therefore they must have a range of control and could not just send the dead throughout the seven kingdoms without going over land......or air. Lastly, ice is made of water and salt dissolves in water. Water that is warmer than the ice also melts that ice. The ocean is probably like an ocean of acid to the walkers. Well, yeah, he was still alive, but was he being directly controlled by his WW creator still or was he just an dead dude acting on his own now that he was far away from his creator. We don't know. My belief is the wights can function perfectly well in fresh water (we see two jump out of the lake to drag tormund) however can't cross sea/salt water (hence why they don't swim around the wall). The Night King wanted to keep Jon and the others there, so Dany would bring the dragons. It's suspected he is green seer to knows Dany is connected to Jon and has dragons. If he simply wanted them dead (and the wights can't cross the water) the he could have thrown spear at them. He need them alive so Dany would arrive and not flee. He wanted Dany to land so the other dragons would stay in range around her, so he could spear them down.
Maybe part of the dragon was sticking out of the water and they grabbed him from there. The dragons are pretty big, could be bigger than the depth of the lake? Just trying to bring some rationale to it, haha I don't want to think that they made such a big blunder

Dead army can't swim but they walk on the bottom of lakes,oceans. They showed us that before and actually showed us in that episode when some fell through the ice and came up later to grab one of the god of light guys.

I noticed the chain incident as well when it happened.
My assumption was; They never established that the dead "can't" go in water, just that they don't. Why? Logically speaking, the dead are most likely, not buoyant. The dead are made up of carcasses with holes in them. They also, most likely, have deflated lungs and are full of heavy fluids, instead of oxygen.
The dead are also killed by fire as the White Walkers are only killed with dragon glass or Valyrian steel. I've notice people often merge the walkers and the dead as the same thing but they are not.
The dead may be able to function under water within range of their controlling walker. Remember, We saw that when a walker is killed, it's controlled dead die instantly, therefore they must have a range of control and could not just send the dead throughout the seven kingdoms without going over land......or air.
Lastly, ice is made of water and salt dissolves in water. Water that is warmer than the ice also melts that ice. The ocean is probably like an ocean of acid to the walkers.

The Night King wanted to keep Jon and the others there, so Dany would bring the dragons. It's suspected he is green seer to knows Dany is connected to Jon and has dragons. If he simply wanted them dead (and the wights can't cross the water) the he could have thrown spear at them.
He need them alive so Dany would arrive and not flee. He wanted Dany to land so the other dragons would stay in range around her, so he could spear them down.

They didn't try to out swim boats. A, they couldn't do that even if they could swim and B, that wouldn't fit into the Knight Kings bigger plan of getting a Dragon to take down the wall. But if I recall, some seemed to come back to life from within the shallow water the people died in. it didn't seem to bother them
