Rickles did both. Many of his lines were prepared. But he delivered them with such professionalism, such talent, that he appeared to be making it up as he went along. Rickels also had a very fast wit. So he would improvise like no one else could.
Comedy is not as easy as it looks. He wrote them. They have professional writers for roasts, he probably got suggestions from writers, I don't how many jokes were his own or from the writers for these roasts.

I flew to Las Vegas in 1985 saw Dino at MGM and got to shake his hand and Mr S at Golden Nugget and meet him backstage as I was only 23 and he appreciated I wrote to him and came so far. I walked past Mr Warmth's Billboard a hundred times during that week. I would trade all my wonderful experience for just one ticket to Don Rickles. I know he would of welcomed me with a genuine warm hug and then ask me . . . 'What did you do leave your kangaroo in the Lobby?' What a Champion 🏆
First time I saw him was in Atlantic City I live about three hours from there drove down went to the Show and drove back home....couldn’t even get a room. The second time I saw him was in New York City Regis Philbin Howard Stern we’re all in the audience and I remember Regis Philbin looking red like he had a ton of make up on. It was a Townhall and I was in the front row and he picked this college kid out of the audience and was ripping on him for 20 minutes and I think I cried the entire time! It was so funny it hurt! The kid was a good sport he knew it was a joke, I wish people could take a joke these days...
Many have tried but nobody i mean nobody can copy the greatest legendary roaster of all time. Don Rickles is gas and will always be the greatest at his quick wit and pure heart laughter induced insults! i wished when i was a kid that i could meet him!

These giants were living in better times. They delivered it... raw humor. Those times are forever gone.

This had to be one of the last roasts....Dean looks older and has those big glasses he wore toward the end. Rickles is the best of all time.
Let's face it. The people who showed up for these events and tuned them in on TV were only doing so because they wanted to see Don Freaking Rickles.
