I don't agree with what you're saying, I'll explain why. This guitarist is valued by the people we like Focus and we like the progressive rock of the 70's, anyone who asks you will answer you saying that this guitarist is the least amazing. The point is, people who aren't deep into 1970s progressive rock don't even know Focus. Focus were not Genesis, Yes or Pink Floyd.
What wonderful footage. I wish there was some film of Gryphon like this in existence. I've spent the entire day listening to Focus albums for the first time - just delicious. Ready for a tour now! By the way, does anyone know - I mean is it widely known amongst Focus fans - that what is played from 1m43s in this video is an extract from the 2nd movement of Bartók's Concerto for Orchestra? Check out the original if you haven't already; a short chorale played by the brass section.
when i looked closer i realise that this is the beginning of "Focus in a mansion", this cut ends with the same Camera-angle as used in the beginning of "Focus in a mansion" :)
I absolutely agree...and it has a touch of Triumvirat as well...nice music to check out as well. Too bad most people only know Focus for their hit Hocus Pocus.
the last real Focus album was "Hamburgo concerto" (1974) The sound and the spirit changed afterwards..May be each period has its own feature ? However, it is good to know that they´re back (since 10 years meanwhile ! )
aw man where is the rest of this! It used to be on youtube. I would watch it a lot. There was an amazing flute improv by Thijs van Leer in a stairwell that sounded amazing
What starts at 1:42 is completely different than what you can find on the album, and is a Focus version of a part of the 2nd Movement in Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra... Which has clearly influenced Focus while writing Eruption.
What's not to like about Focus ? Pierre ,Jan,Cyril ,and Thijs .One of the Best bands of the 70s.Jan is on Facebook . Add him ,he's a very nice and very funny guy.
different than Van Halen's "Eruption".Still Focus..with the original lineup..is quite good.Their style mirrors Yes,King Crimson,ELP..even Tull at some point.
Those sunsabitches stole my idea of playing THAT EXACT PART of bartok's concerto for orchestra with a rock band 21 YEARS BEFORE I WAS BORN. what the hell, people. Also great song :P
Holy cow! there's actually footage of this? In the recording studio? Hey is that Jan's Gibson before the "modification"? And what's Thijs playing, an L-100? Oh this video is soo awesome...
@Damilosko these guys are legends. how super awesome are your chops? you're clearly the type of person with nothing better to do that put down music you don't like. you're right tho, I do that in music stores. good way to get students.
How many bands, I wonder, copied their prog-style, either accidentally (not knowing who they were or by degrees removed) or purpusefully. Focus rocks. Long live Thijs (and the rest of the crew). They started out in '69, didn't they?
@Damilosko we all have our opinnions, like i have an oppinion of you right now, i wont tell you it though i havent sworn much today and would like to keep it that way : )
Could be a guest or something aswell, this is the same place as in Focus in a Mansion, so that problebly why you have seen here in another vid. Could be a girlfriend to of course, but problebly no Thiijs van Leer's ^^.
I thought you can make that sound by adding alot of reverb and such to your sound and if you look carefull when he plucks a note he turns the volume up.and back down again. it's called volume swell.Makes a violin like sound
@teddingtontcu why not? they are both progressive bands, and in my opinion they were not near the caliber of YES, whats wrong in saying that, and there's no need to ne calling me names and insulting me just for making an observation , its just my opinion isn't that what comments are for, and getting so upset by my comment..hmm who's the moron....bands are compared all the time espec when they are in the same genre..how many times have people commented on the Stones and the Beatles music.
THIS IS AWFUL?!!! are you people honestly saying you like this? you're clearly all the type of people who go to guitar shops just to show off you're super awesome skills
i like focus but to me they were trying to do the YES trip and of course there's only one YES, and these guys are great musicians individually but their compositons and ablity as a band were not anywhere near the greatness of "YES"
What's not to like about Focus ? Pierre ,Jan,Cyril ,and Thijs .One of the Best bands of the 70s.Jan is on Facebook . Add him ,he's a very nice and very funny guy.
What a magical time this must have been...

Bela bartok concerto #2
Great band, full stop.
Could be a guest or something aswell, this is the same place as in Focus in a Mansion, so that problebly why you have seen here in another vid. Could be a girlfriend to of course, but problebly no Thiijs van Leer's ^^.
correction: it's 23minutes long!
not long enough...
They were afraid that it was not loud enough? The girl might be deaf or is perhaps already dead..
I thought you can make that sound by adding alot of reverb and such to your sound and if you look carefull when he plucks a note he turns the volume up.and back down again. it's called volume swell.Makes a violin like sound
@TheHitez If I say I'm doing the same thing right now would you believe me? what wonderful band....
I love this.
BTW , does anyone know what amps they're using?
They're using Fender Solid State full stacks.
