The Leica 28mm f1.4 Summilux ASPH was the final piece to round out Leica wide-angle Summilux line. It features a "floating element" that optimizes performance and ensures sharpness at close distances. It also creates a distinct visual signature through its shallow depth of field and high sharpness in the focal plane.

I’ve owned a 28mm Summilux for nearly 4 months now, and I must say it is one of the sharpest lenses I’ve ever owned in my 28 years. I’m a full-time photojournalist, and it has been with me on almost every assignment since I bought it-has not let me down one bit, no matter the conditions. The colors and bokeh it produces is otherworldly. My only thing would be the purple fringing sometimes, but that can easily be fixed in LR. I use an M11 and MP black paint; the pairings are pure bliss. If you’re thinking of getting this lens, I highly recommend it. I just cannot see myself ever selling it, ever.

@pablounzueta Do you find this difficult to utilize the the widest apertures during daylight on the MP? The shutter speed only goes up to 1/1000th. Are you using an ND filter then?

Thank you for this video. I used to own and use the Leica 28mm F/1.4 Summilux-M ASPH myself. I found it to be difficult to focus at 1.4 with the rangefinder, and mostly used it at apertures ranging from 4.0 to 8.0 to make incredible urban landscape and occassionally street photography shots. I found that the image quality of the 28mm Summilux combined with yellow or orange filters on a Leica M10 Monochrom produces stellar images at those apertures.
However, I eventually lost my love for this lens due to all of the usability problems that I was experiencing. The lens is unreasonably large and heavy, especially for the apertures I prefer to shoot in. I hate its lens hood because it makes the lens so much bigger and less discreet on the streets. The plastic lens cap is extremely finicky and often slides out while I have put the camera in the bag. Also I could never seem to get to focus on the subjects properly whenever I tried to take pictures at 1.4, either with the rangefinder patch or with Visoflex. This is even when I sent this lens along with the rest of my Leica kit to Wetzlar in order to CLA and get correctly calibrated. Also, the purple fringing / chromatic abberation is horrible in many circumstances when doing color photography. Maybe I am using my software wrong, but to me Lightroom often cannot handwave all of the fringing away, either requiring me to waste minutes on fiddling with the sliders of each individual image or even going further and using brushes and other tools to manually get rid of the noticeable fringing.
I eventually decided to trade it along with a bunch of other old stuff for the Leica 35mm F/1.4 Summilux-M ASPH FLE II that recently came out. The usability of this lens is much better. As a glasses wearer, it is much easier to see and compose with the 35mm framelines. It is much smaller in length and barrel thickness, which makes the camera much more balanced, easier to hold and manipulate in my hands. It can close focus up to 0.40 meters instead of 0.70 meters, which actually makes a huge difference as with proper use of the 1.4 aperture you can make stunning close-up Noctilux-like shots with amazing bokeh. I personally found it easier to nail focus at 1.4 aperture at many different distances for some reason as well, though I do not know why. In any case, I do not regret the swap at all, as the new 35mm Summilux FLE II is much more usable on the streets and offers fantastic close focus capabilities.
The only things I miss about this lens is the slightly more exaggerated distortion effect that you can make use of to make features of the landscape more exaggerated. This lens is incredible to use for landscapes and for B&W photography, and I don't think my 35mm Summilux can completely replicate the images. Still, that does not discount all of my complaints as in an urban environment a smaller lens is much more practical. In hindsight, I should have bought the 28mm F/2.8 Elmarit instead of this giant 28mm F/1.4 Summilux, but oh well. I plan to complement my current 35mm lens with a 21mm or 24mm lens in the future in order to regain the ability to make wide-angle shots that make creative use of perspective distortion.

Thanks for watching and also sharing your experience with the lens! The 35 FLE II is also one of our favorite lenses as well.

May I offer a couple of additional thoughts? The obvious question is how does this lens compare with Leica's other 28 Summilux, the Q and Q2? I owned the Q, but when I acquired this lens and used it on my M10 (at the time), the Summilux-M noticeably outperformed the Q's Summilux, especially for edge distortion. I wound up selling the Q because this lens was just that much better. If you are a Q or Q2 owner and also have an M, I caution you from trying the lens as you may find yourself also liquidating your Q to acquire one. Another thread worth discussing is what accessories make using the lens most enjoyable. I definitely advocate for the handgrip or thumb rest to get better purchase on the M body with this front heavy lens. I used both on my M10, and while it makes for a chunkier M experience, the extra size quickly fades into the background. I also added the UVa II filter for protection. The new series of UVa filters is a noticeable improvement over their precursors. All in all, it's my 3rd favorite M lens behind the 35 APO and 50 APO.

The Q2 doesn’t have a Summilux. The Qs lenses are 1/2 stop slower.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the lens! The thumb grip is one of our favorite accessories for the M system as well. To answer your question about the 28 Summilux-M and the 28 Summilux on the Q Series cameras, they are definitely two different lenses all together, part of the reason why we strayed away from referencing or comparing them in this video. They do share some similarities but are engineered per their own needs, the 28 Summilux M is constructed to the standard and tolerances of all current production M lenses while the Q lens has to accommodate the need for auto-focus, the macro/close focus abilities, and communicate electronically to the rest of the camera. This could explain the performance differences between the two. Hope this little bit of info helps!

I’m stuck between this and the 35 Lux/cron for my M11. Tough choice for sure great job with the video!

I'm in the same boat, I have the M11 with the 35 cron, I'm not sure I'd need or want to pay for 1 more stop of light. That said, I've been eyeing a 21 SEM for a bit.

I’ve had both. For me it came down to which one felt better in the hand. I sold the Summicron.

Thanks for watching! We're personally fans of the Summilux line altogether. The rendering on both digital and film is beautiful. Please check out our TP&S episode on the 35 Summilux FLE v1&2 as we used those lenses on the M11 as well.

i own the new fle 2 and for me been able to focus at 0.4m vs 0.7m is really useful and the size is still tiny for a 1.4 Lens

This lens always develops a wobble right at the gap between the focussing ring and the DOF scale. Just gently rock the two pieces above and below this gap and you will hear clicking noises. I have sold and bought this lens 2 times for this issue and the seller is kind enough to open two to three factory sealed (with circular white stickers) lenses for me to choose. They either have a very tight focussing ring or they wobble (even when new). For those with a very tight focussing ring they will eventually loosen up and the wobbling starts to occur. I have discussed this issue with the seller, and he said that his own copy has the same problem, and his father's copy also has the exact same problem.
This problem has never occurred in any other M lenses that I own.
I am now accepting this issue as a design flaw, and it seems that image quality remains unaffected. Though I have not tested the lens seriously for lens elements decentering.

I have regretted buying this lens many times.
It really is too big for the M viewfinder. It doesn't have a ring to remove the hood.
I really disliked the huge amount of chromatic aberration and the vignetting was too much.
My copy had a very tight focus ring. I even sent it to the service department for diagnosis. They told me that it was normal for that lens. But after a couple of months the lens broke down and I had to send it in for service again. In the end I sold it after six months and lost a lot of money.
I so regretted selling my Q. It was so much better and cheaper than this equipment.
