I remember Terrell Brandon fondly. The Cavs did not have a supremely talented team in the Mid/late 90s but Mike Fratello was a genius coach and Brandon was a hell of a point guard. They did not score a lot of points but they controlled the offense and ran a good chunk of the shot clock away while getting good shots and played very good defense. People who don’t know basketball would say it was boring to watch but it was a beautifully constructed scheme that allowed them to win more games than they should have.

How about a little cheese with that whine. Look as far as the hall of famer thing goes who cares. Were you there when all this was happening? I was. Saw all these games as they happened and recorded most of them on my brand new VCR. Everyone during that era agrees that the Lakers were a better deeper team, especially coming off the bench. Except for 85/86 when the Celts had Walton, Wedman, and Sichting coming off the bench. Celtics dominated the Lakers that year. Unfortunately Walton got injured the next year and that was the end of that. So let me cut to the chase on all this other BS. As far as I'm concerned Mullet Bird (1980 to 88) is the baddest man to ever lace up a pair of basketball shoes. Admittedly after the 87 playoffs and the injuries he incurred he was not the same consistency wise. But during those years... yeah I will put Larry Joe Legend up against anyone. Period, end of story. I realize that this is a minority opinion at this time but I really don't give a rats ass. That's my opinion and I'm entitled to it. No skin off my back if people disagree.

His percentage in clutch time( the end of a quarter, a half, the game or overtime) I've read is over 70%. The more important it was, the better he got. Even Stephen Smith said that in clutch time, leadership ability, or holding his teammates to a high level of accountability he can't go with Lebron over Bird and he had those traits when he came into the league. Nobody had a stronger drive than Bird, Domonique talks of Birds will to win. Larry Legend....

The story refers to Bird's last year in the league. With his back injury he had nothing left to give at that point; but though brute force of B-ball IQ he was still elite. Early in his career he was athletic and could jump decently high. He was just built and moved awkward and people associate that with poor athletics.

Remember, this was the last year of Bird's career where his back/spine pain was so bad that he couldn't feel his feet when he was running and he often times would have to spend the night before a game in traction, in order to be able to play that night. It gradually made him look like an old man (especially that last season), and he was a shell of what he was in his prime and yet he was still playing at a high level. Watch games from the early 80s to about 88 (especially 86), when he was in his prime and won 3 MVP awards in a row.

Both Magic and Bird are underrated for their unselfish contributions that made their teams stand out in an era of great talent and teams.
Sixers, Rockets, Blazers, Jazz, Pistons, Bulls...
I am not convinced that there is a team today that could beat any of these teams in the 80s and early 90s.

The thing about the Celtics Larry didn't have to be the one that hogs the ball to win. He hit so many shots Double Teamed. But he knew when to pass to Danny or DJ who were also fantastic outside shooters and Parish and McHale were so good at mid range and outside shooting. When teams tried to shut Bird down he was the Master of finding a open teammate. Majic basically the same thing. Both the Lakers and the Celtics were all All Stars. I miss those days. It has never been the same since those Electic Years of the Eighties. When they played each other usually there was blood on the floor. They tough competitors.

"I can't run; I can't jump, but I can play basketball" Larry Bird
You youngsters just don't get it. When asked to compare Lebron to Bird people immediately start talking about how Lebron is much more athletic than Bird was. True, no doubt. But think about something for a second. The Boston Celtics went from winning just 29 games prior to Bird's arrival to winning 61 games and making it to the conference fInals( not the NBA finals) the very next year in Bird's rookie season. Bird had an impact that was much more than just being athletic or the lack of. Bird was a winner and made everyone else around him a winner immediately. Bird didn't have to leave the Celtics and go join another NBA team with two other NBA superstars to get a championship. He made the Celtics a winning club just on his arrival alone. The man brought something that is rarely seen in an athlete and THAT is why Lebron will NEVER be as good as Larry BIrd.
Though we'll never know but IF the two were to play against each other in the 80's--Bird lights up Lebron easily for 30 or more. AND Bird shuts down Lebron. Bird just knew how to beat you...PERIOD.

Bird was not athletic at this point of his career. His body had broken down and he could barely move.
The difference between 1991 Bird and 1981 Bird was stark.
He got by on insane hand/eye coordination (think Curry level) and smarts.

That was up in the rafters of the old Garden. They had a wooden running track up there.

    Respect is earned Snowflake.
Neither BIRD nor MAGIC were known for "athleticism" by their peers! Meaning essentially, no circus dunks
