I heard the same story on another video.
I'll never forget Barkley at the Sixers, game winding down and he's fouling the heck out of Larry in the post and Larry still just took the ball and made the shot, leaving Barkley falling to the floor. Back then regular fouls didn't deter guys like MJ and Bird. You had to go full Bad Boy Pistons mode to try to stop them.
You can tell Byron Scott has the utmost respect for Larry Bird

Nothing like the basketball between the pro’s & college in the 80’s
Yea the 1990s were great too but the 80s were the cream of the crop of basketball
I lived through both and both were truly amazing. There's no tougher era for Basketball than the 80's and in the 90's you got to see the culmination of some absolutely bonkers superstars when that term actually meant something. But at least from my experience, the 80's was the top for the NBA as a league and basketball as a whole.
My favorite from Larry was when he pump-faked dude and as the defender flew by, he said, "welcome to the parachute club." And of course, he drained the 3.
That was Brad Daugherty he did that to. Daugherty was a real good center. Had back problems and didn't play long but he made about 5 all star teams
@@mongoslade277 Actually the Parachute club was against Rodney Rogers, but the Brad Daugherty one he told Brad "Fly Bird" as he went by. Chris Webber was the one who told the Rodney Rogers story. You should heard the one by Jamal Mashburn. That is a really good one as well.

@@FreedomFighter2112 I don't know how you get the data is but no way Jordan and Kobe over Larry in clutch shot. In Celtic's bird era there is only one man to shoot if game in line and that is Larry bird. Every one knows that.
We (the older ones) are blessed of being able to see these guys play... 80&90s have been such an outstanding era for Basketball... Real defense, real men....
The younger generation(s) don't understand what they missed. Those that know, know.

Charles Barkley tells a similar story of Bird being pissed off by the Sixers putting a white guy on him to defend him. He hated being guarded by white players. He felt it was disrespectful to his game and he made them pay for it.
Damn, B Scott played during the LEGENDARY era. 80s into the 90s. The golden age of the NBA. Bird & Magic, Kareem, Sir Charles, the Bad Boys, Hakeem, Ewing, Dominique, Shawn Kemp during his Rain Man era with the Glove, Orlando Shaq with Penny, Stockton-to-Malone, and of course, the GOAT, MJ. He got to play with and against the best of the best to ever do it.
Understandably, too many stars in that era, Dr. J , Mosses Malone, the Twin towers of Hakeem Olajuwan and Ralph Sampson, Marquees Johnson, Bernard King, and many more missing on your list.
It's amazing that back in the day, these guys were literally at each other's throats but today have nothing but utter love and respect like brothers.
That's the mindset of a competitor. During your playing years, you're at each other. After retirement you got nothing but love for each other.
Also, they left it on the court during the game. They did all they could on the court to win- whether fair or foul- but afterwards it was all good between them. Real recognized real.
That was on the court.
Off the court there was a lot of respect towards each other.
Except that crybaby Isaiah Thomas.
Probably most of them except for people like Bird and Laimbeer. To this day they hate each other.
I love how B Scott loves and respects his legendary opponents, telling these stories with such enthusiasm. He's a fan like us, while also being a great player in his time on an all-time team.
Imagine being able to play against Bird and Jordan and playing with Magic?

I always enjoy listening to Byron Scott. He respects his opponents (Bird, Jordan) and he’s very entertaining telling these old stories. I could listen to this stuff all day.

I love Magic's stories about playing against Bird and everyone questioning him when he went home about how good Larry was. He said he would tell them that dude is plain out badass on the court!
The exact reply from Magic (about how good Bird was), "Man, Larry Bird is so good it's frightening!" While Jordan is generally seen as the GOAT, I don't think there is another NBA player who garnered more respect from Magic than Bird did. Bird obviously also has THE highest respect for Magic, but Magic not only GREATLY respects Larry Bird, but he'll go out of his way to (verbally) defend Bird, as well. Ahhh those were the days!!
@@mikes3827 Bird and Magic were great competitors and peers that became great friends. MJ didn't have any peers. Players they assumed would be became roadkill for Mike. Bird and Magic have a very special bond so you understand why they talk like that about each other.

But also the fact that Hollywood couldn't have written a better script (i.e. white, blue-collar player playing for the most storied, blue-collar city vs. black guy with the outgoing personality and glamour going to the perfect city to host him), just having come off THE highest-rated basketball game ever that just happened to pit Bird vs. Magic, so there was already an unprecedented national (even international) fascination as it related to Bird-Magic.
Then both saved the languishing NBA, as the league BADLY needed re-branding, and what better two players than Magic and Bird to do that?
At this point, whether either of them wants to admit it, BOTH players are intertwined, as sooner vs. later both names will usually come up in conversation when talking about one or the other name. Then both realized HOW much they liked each other as human beings, when they had that famous Converse commercial at French Lick, so that just brought them closer. Then the reaction by both to the news of Magic getting HIV REALLY, REALLY made them VERY close.
Like I say, no other all-encompassing a relationship between two adversarial pro athletes has ever been greater than Bird-Magic.

I recommend watching the documentary of Magic and Larry. It is just a great documentary.
Larry is real humble about it, all these funny and great stories come from others.
If I'm not mistaken Byron Scott quoted Larry Bird as saying "Michael Cooper was the best defender I ever faced". I was lucky enough to be around when Cooper played. Man, I loved that guy. Cooper would ratchet up his defense on great players like Jordan and Bird and actually hold them in check. Those were times I will always treasure. I lived in SoCal and watched the championships.
not to mention Coop-A-Loop that always ratcheted up the fans

Byron''s story legit sounds real. Both bird and mj stories sound so believable and so cocky. But I get the impression that bird talked more shit than mj we just have a hard time bleieving it cus he's so white and with a mullet. But i think that's what would have made it even worse as a defender, an unathletic white dude who talks trash and backs it up
MJ said that LB is the best trash talker and mind game player of all time, and that he learned a lot from him about getting in the head of the opponents, so yeah...the mullet could definitely be deceiving.

That is authentic larry bird and jordan. They knew they were on a higher level and if you put them up against a weak defender they will rip that poor guy apart piece by piece until the coach has no choice. Honestly they need a one liner list from larry. Im sure it would be a riot.
He was just a soft-spoken, and helpful savage who never wanted his opponents to be surprised with a loss.
one thing we forget was in the late 80s and 90s throughout, the avg score of the games were 70-90, 100 would be a very high scoring game, so MJ avg 30+ most of his seasons (37.1 at peak) was literally avg 50% of the offense, that would be same as someone avg'n 60 today. And the scary part was his avg would go up in the playoffs, and further go up in the finals where he avg 40+ vs the suns, even his last finals game he gave 45 while the score was 87-86.
The average score during that period was never close to 70, I don't know where you read that off
Average score in the 80s = 109.3.
Average score in the 90s = 101.3.
However MJ was a major part of Chicago’s scoring and the best scorer in NBA history.
