    Their food wouldn't have been the problem, they needed to find water. If the smoking sea is still as hot as you mentioned, the ship must be a constant sauna. Working in a hot, humid environment with scarce amounts of water would be a great motivation to rush towards any landing site. Difficulties with sleep, dehydration, poor vissibility, knowledge of the area and lack of communication? The Laughing Lion's end, as you told it, was inevitable.
    Love these kind of videos.

    Im not sure if he will stick with it, but in one of martins outlines for winds, he had Tyrion meet the shrouded king. He was supposed to find out he was related to him. It may not happen now, but I'm pretty sure it was supposed to be his uncle, who found more than he bargained for.

    Boar and Lion, I started watching your channel through the Valyria series. There's no shortage of ASOIAF content on YT but few go into Valyria the way you do; kudos to you for your approach which incorporates a lot of real life examples for comparison. It shows you do your research and adds more to how one can interpret the lore. You got my sub a while ago but hope you get to 10K soon.

    Don't get discouraged by the drop off in views. The first part was blessed by the algorithm and showed up in a lot of home pages. This content is original and interesting. It certainly earned my sub. I hope you keep this up, it's much better than videos discussing the shows.

But thank you very much for the reassuring words, I appreciate it. I do have to admit however that I plan on discussing House of the Dragon extensively in future video's. I think the Volantines killed him just in case he was successful in any way, they do see themselves as the heirs to Valyria so they’d want to keep any treasure for themselves, it’s also possible he made it through and crashed in Sothoryos and was unable to leave due to the horrors of that place. But I do think he’s dead in any case

    • @mikkellarsen3643
      @mikkellarsen3643 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      What if the volantines killed him on the way out?
      That would be a more tragic story and support the idea that Euron could have made it.

    • @billychops1280
      @billychops1280 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@mikkellarsen3643 I think that Gerion wasn’t as skilled or as cruel as Euron to make it out of there alive, plus he went in looking for the remains of a specific host of men. So he most likely went into the smoking sea whereas Euron likely went to those purged islands which were safer to navigate. If Gerion did make it out I think it would only have been because he gave up, realizing that it’s not worth it, which means that he likely had no treasure with him so the Volantines don’t really have a motif to kill him then.

    You're probably right, Gerion and pals got murdered before ever reaching Valyria.
    Euron? My favorite theory I've heard is that he's a warg, and that he wargs into sea creatures (esp octopi and squids) to bring himself lost sea treasures which he can pass off as coming from Valyria. I mean, the Silence is manned by mute slaves, they can't tell anybody what really happened.

      They had to sail the ship with only half the necessary crew. If they would have gone west, they had to choose from the southern routes through the Basilisk Isles, the route over the open ocean (both very dangerous for a single ship because of pirates) or the route that would take them past Volantis. They would never have made it to Braavos.

    I actually don't think that the volcanic activity lasted full scale that long. It's not very likely and even islands with strong volcanic activities (Iceland for one, or the coast near the Vesuv) do not develop such hazards like the gas bubbles long term. As the book series is not concluded, we do not know whether Gerion will show up again, or news of his fate. I think beyond the whole volcanic stuff there are other hazards in Valyria. I honestly also wonder if the whole "looking for Brightroar" might have been an excuse, something Gerion said, to make his quest acceptable to House Lannister, while he had different plans entirely. As for the slaves: yes a slave rebellion is likely and possible, but if Gerion was a modicrum smart, he looked at the slaves he bought in greater detail and chose those of some courage, who could be enticed by the promise of freedom.

    • @servalkorion686

      Unless the Volcanic activity was always like that & Valyria used magic to keep the volcanic activity “controlled”

    • @sweettt321
      @sweettt321 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @Valandhir This is asoiaf where certain things are more extreme and long lasting than in the real world. We've got genetics and physical features that last far longer than they should, a place like Asshai that's been magically blighted for centuries, if not millennia, and Valyria which can be thought of as "the heart of fire" in the same way the very far north of Westeros is called "the heart of winter".
      It's possible that the volcanoes were always active *ish* but being free to finally erupt after eight or so thousand years of having Valyrian mages keep them in check led to a never ending eruption that can last for centuries

    If you can change the text in the thumbnail to say something like "Part 1", "Part 2" etc it might help with viewership.
    I say this because it's difficult to tell if its a different video than what you've previously posted. When I was scrolling through, the name of the video got cut off and I didn't notice it was by you so I thought it was a copycat video of one of the ones I already watched. Kinda missed and obvious danger of sailing on a boiling sea. That ship doesn't have to sink to cook you alive. The hull is going to heat up and cook you just as easily.
    On top of that as the hull heats up the tar and pitch used to seal it is going to melt as well.

    • @theboarandthelion
      @theboarandthelion  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Let me start by saying that you're right in that I completely overlooked this when making these video's. However, I did some quick research just now and I found the following:
      Either tar or pitch was used to make medieval ships waterpoof.
      Tar melts. And quickly. It starts melting around 42 - 46 degrees celsius. So this could be a problem. This would mean that Gerion, Tommen and the Volantene fleet would all have died in the boiling waters of the Smoking Sea because their ships fell apart.
      Pitch however, does not melt. It does soften. But this only starts at a temperature of 200 degrees celsius. So a ship that was sealed with pitch could have survived the Smoking Sea without problem. Knowing how long the Known World has been stuck in the same 'technological time-period', I think its same to assume that after thousands of years, the shipbuilders of Westeros had knowledge of the differences between pitch and tar. And having heard rumors of the boiling waters of the Smoking Sea, Gerion took a ship that was made waterproof with pitch. Which would solve the problem.
      However, I do not want to act like I'm an expert on the subject. This is what I could find after some quick google searches. So feel free to correct me!

    Hellllll yeshhhhhhhhh

  • @tooslow4065
    @tooslow4065 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    the only problem with all this is i highly doubt anyone would be so stupid as to just rush right into the smoking sea. why? more likely you would said around the area a bit first, noticing all the smoke and boiling sea first. then you might notice the slight smell of the gas before you even get close enough to a bubble of it. you would also probably check the temperature of the water, since it would be heating up your wooden ship.
    makes a lot more sense to make landfall as close as you can get, safely, then set up a camp where you can hunt for food. then you send out people in a smaller boat to explore the sea. no need to risk everyone. you'd also hire or buy a slave that spoke your language as well as low valyrian so you can communicate.

    • @theboarandthelion
      @theboarandthelion  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The gas bubbles and the toxic gas were no longer a danger at the time of Gerion's journey. So that would't have stopped him. And I imagine the sea gets hotter as you go farther in. The water temperature doesnt go from 15 to 100 in a couple of kilometers/miles. As to making landfall and sending a smaller ship in, I have a theory about that. Which will feature in part 4. But basically: If you could just make landfall anywhere, why do they all choose to sail the Smoking Sea?
      For the first 2 expeditions by ship: The Volantenes had orders and couldn't simply turn back or take it slow. King Tommen Lannister was over-confident and didn't think the dangers of the Smoking Sea could hurt him.
      As to your last point, you are right, They could have bought a slave that would work as a translator. That completely skipped my mind. And I am now very happy that I didn't let the miscommunication between Gerion and his slaves be the deciding cause of their crash. Which was my initial idea... So thank you for pointing that out!
