Learning how to Print Letterpress (Kelsey Press, Vandercook, & Showcard)

  • Featured are the Showcard Proofing Press, 8x10 Kelsey, and the Vandercook 219.
    In this video I demonstrate three great presses housed at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. I show from start to finish how to ink up, operate, and clean each press as well as how to use the guillotine cutter, how to oil the Vandercook, and how to change the packing.
    There is also a great little trick at 19 minutes that shows my favorite technique for perfectly lining up photopolymer every time!
    Sorry if my voiceover is a little stilted or if in a few cases I use a wonky term. (I call the ink drum a roller at one point).
    This video is not meant to replace proper instruction on any of these machines! If you want to learn letterpress sign up for some classes or find yourself a mentor. I was mentored for about three years before making this video. Having proper safety instruction is key because it protects you and these venerable machines. Tie up your hair, wear gloves/aprons, have adequate ventilation, and be careful of moving parts!
    Enjoy! Long live letterpress!
    Special thanks to Diana Eicher and the MCAD Printshop

    How do you recommend inking a press?

    One caution that I would like to add, I have a 1930s' Challenge lever cutter that's very much like yours. MAKE VERY SURE that the lever is ALL the way back and locked. People get in a hurry and if that lever is not locked, fingers get lost. Probably the single most dangerous piece of equipment you have. Iv'e been in the industry for 35 years and have heard many a horror story on those. mine has a stout chain and padlock on it. Kids want make pads fine, use the clamp and clean up after. Need something cut, ask Dad.

    good.good tutorial..do you have video tutorial with the embossing and debossing technique ..thank you

    • @PantheraPress
      @PantheraPress  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Letterpress printing presses don't typically do embossing, (which requires a male and a female plate) - particularly not these presses shown. Debossing is done that same an any other print except with extra packing and no ink

    Cuidáis de ellas y aquí en centroamericana llorando las hemos entregado al reciclaje, y pronto también a nosotros.

    Whoever scripted and explained this video should make a ton more. Super clear, I feel like I could do it myself along with the video, and I don't even own any of the equipment!

      I haven't gotten any notifications from my videos for some reason so sorry for not responding, but I would not be a good person for that. Check with the people at Briar Press (briarpress.com) there are many experts in their forums

    It used to be normal stuff, today it's voodoo knowing how to print manually. Why bother with all this antiquated machinery when you can print digitally and whatnot. But yeah, I get it - I like my music on vinyl and tape, I like touching paper and pressing buttons, I prefer books on paper, I enjoy using a film camera. Of course I can do all these things on a tablet but I won't enjoy it. It's nice how hipsters today keep the dead technology alive. The good hipsters. Not the fake ironic ones who pretend. Thanks for the demonstration.
