Thanks Ryan, you've got more legals than in me the past week so count me jealous! I'm a grinder just like you, some days work out, and I'll always be grateful for those days.
Man, those tacos are done exactly right, all the fixins'. And halibut is just good tasting fish to start with. Beer batter could possibly have been invented specifically for halibut. As a surf fishing beginner, finding structure is the hardest thing for me. This morning a guy on Bolsa Chica that I see around and talk to caught a 17 inch corbina. On ghost shrimp. He caught it just after we had chatted and I had fished past him, which is why I saw the fish and got to put my tape measure to it. I think there's troughs and holes scattered all around that area where I usually encounter this fellow. The beach is steeper there (if that makes a difference?). Plus there seems to be less surfers. I go there because at least for the time being it seems to be an active area. Two ospreys with fish, looked like croakers, flew right in front of me over the water. I got a small stingray (on a lc), and not one other nibble (also tried gulp sandworms). Yet it was still a great, beautiful day.
First off, thank you for such a thoughtful comment. It means everything to me and keeps me going 🙏. Imo identifying structure, current, rips, etc is the steepest learning curve as we start out. I’m no expert, but I think I’ve improved, which is all I can ask for. What you’re describing sounds quite ideal...obviously it doesn’t always work out the way we expect but from what I’ve been taught by those way better than me - the best fishermen put the odds in their favor. I think that’s all we can hope to do. Tight lines to you and your son my friends!

I learning how to surf fish right now and halibut fishing and I live in south San Diego. Would u teach a beginner I'm also trying to learn the bay also.
If I had to choose ONE, it’d be metallic sardine just because it’s a pattern that can be fished in all conditions. Not that you can’t do that with others but the simple baitfish pattern is one I believe all lc users should start with.
Benjie another great video. I usually C rig with about 6 LC's in my back pack scared to come out. You are making me want to try nothing but LC for a day and see what happens. After I do the Benjie mods of course!! Nervous water. love that term Thanks Benjie!

Happy holidays my friend!
hi, ben would you ever do a fishing session with a subscriber to teach them hands-on I live in vista. and I want to learn how to fish for halibut in the surf. I also learned a lot from your videos.
Thanks for the comment Peter, much appreciated. I’ve never done anything like that with subs tho I’ve had the privilege of running into many of u on the sand. Who knows, maybe I will set up some kind of meet up in more of a group setting in the future 🤙
I never give up per se. just depends on my game plan for the day. Sometimes it’s lc only and I’ll go for 3-4 hours in a typical session - fish or no fish. Other times I’ll bring multiple setups and mix it up until I can find a bite.
Great video, Benjie! Way to represent local SoCal sports culture and melting pot cuisine. Love the Cass Beer, Kewpie mayo, and Sriracha touch on the locally-sourced Ensenada-style halibut tacos!
Such a wholesome video Benjie. Your videos keep getting better and better. Did you catch this halibut recently? Is winter time good for halibut in SoCal?
Thanks for the kind words, truly means a lot to me so thank you. This was caught in the beginning of November. Fall/Winter is a good time for halibut in SoCal...quantity is a bit tougher but quality tends to go up. At least in my experience 🤙
I never tied lures direct to the main braid line. Is this good way to tie jerk bait lures? Is it only good to tie direct to braid if you use Tactical Clips vs. original ring? Thanks in advance!
It's definitely an option for throwing jerk baits. A couple of positives to straight braid is better casting distance and higher sensitivity. 1 downside is if you're fishing rocks/reefs, braid has poor abrasion resistance. 1 difference is there is less stretch when fighting fish so drag should be set differently. There is no difference between tying straight or using a TAC. The primary benefit to using a TAC is the convenience of swapping out different lures without having to retie.
Thanks Michael, for line I recommend 12-15 lb test (mono or fluoro) tho some will go up to 20. For the lucky craft fm110, most local tackle shops will carry them. You can also use the links in the video description to purchase them from Amazon. Hope that helps!

Yes it is the Super Glow MS MKB....currently my favorite pattern. But tbh, any baitfish pattern should work just fine along with the Cherry Berry and Electric Grunion. I don’t know what it is about the pink bottom, but something about that on ANY pattern seems to be a big plus.

Thank you. The measuring device comes as part of the Halibut Surf Derby kit. I believe it costs about $30 to $35 and can be picked up at some tackle shops or purchased at crystalwaterstackle.com. Its a year long contest with monthly winners as well as the biggest halibut for the year. If you're interested in joining, I recommend waiting for the new year as it starts in January and ends in December. 🤙
This is awesome, great video Benjie. Is the LC you are using listed below? Is it the 783 Super Glow MS MKB? I need to go hunt it down to learn how to use LC stuff. Thanks for the tips!
Thank you! I wish I could’ve put a link below but they are not in stock on Amazon or eBay. Not sure if they are out of production or if they’ll ship again.
@@BenjieKimFishing Got it, okay I was curious about the style and what it looked like. I am putting together a Hali setup for the upcoming December bite. Thanks for the helP!
Where is this fishing spot bro?
Hey Quinn I don't specify spots on my channel but this is in SD county.
Another great video Benjie! I'm coming back out to SD for a weekend in two weeks, hoping to connect with something on the sand. Keep em videos coming! #KOTS 😜
Ilya!!!! I hope ur well bro, I saw ur hike with the wife the other day, that was insane.
I’m crossing my fingers and hoping you make a permanent move to the west coast bro, ur truly good people man. I’m so grateful to have the memory of having fished with ya up in Ventura and just being able to stay in touch via social media. But hopefully we can fish again one day!
Awesome video brother! Nice tacos btw I make a great hot sauce that compliments the fish and shrimp tacos with enough heat to not overwhelm the palate just simple ingredients mucho sabor
Thanks Bruce! Oh man, sounds amazing. I really need to step up my hot sauce game. I LOVE super spicy food but my kiddos can’t handle it. But that’s my fault cuz I didn’t train em. 😜
Now I’m hungry! I’m terrible at being patient enough to walk that far before casting. Gotta work on that.
Only walk if you need to. On this day, it was either walk, go home, or experience a salad filled skunk!
Ur the man josh, thank you so much for all your support!!
Hey benjie can u recommend a good beach for halibut fishing? Me and my bud are from ventura and been on the hunt for halibut for so long :( I always see you catching them and I'm starting to think its not just that you're great at what u do but also the area... I'm planning to go south so I was hoping you could give me some broad but not too specific spots? (bc u gotta keep urs safe from us) :)
Hey Alex send me a dm on Instagram or email me at benjiekimfishing@gmail
I know for sure that halibut hold in Ventura, I just don’t know if it’s seasonal nor do I know specific spots. But I’ve seen catches posted from there. I’ve never fished Malibu but I do know hali hold there as well.
Either way, hit me up and I’ll help u out with what I can 🤙
A big fat NO on the cilantro.
I just moved to san diego from Florida about a year ago. I'd love to link up with you if your down ! Need a fishing buddy and to learn how to fish around here :)
Wow from one great place to fish (it appears...) to another! Kit Ryan, I’m mostly a lone wolf but I do link up with subscribers and friends here and there!
