I was excited to find your compilation of these two great masters side-by-side. I downloaded and printed hard copies of these pictures some while back and tried to put together a similar thing, but you've done a much better job of it! Thanks for taking the time to do it and for sharing it with us.
THANX bnectar for putting this 2gether and uploading it on you tube. i find it interesting and quite a contrast. this is an excellent idea and well put together
That's an interesting inquiery! Well, first, I make a distinction btwn perfect and perfect. Meaning each master has their own flavor, and excel in different areas, and of course, perfection is more a process than a goal. Some of the ppl whose forms and other skills taught me a lot, are Feng Zhi Qiang, CMC, Huang Shen Shyan, Ma Yue Liang and many others.
Yang Cheng Fu was reported to have said he had changed his father's form as much as possible while retaining the essence of Tai Chi Chuan and that form should not be further modified.
Chen Wei-Ming's stances tend to be longer, his torso posture a little tighter. It may be a function of different body types. Yang Cheng-Fu is clearly a big man (which may help explain his reputation as undefeated in his lifetime). Chen Wei-Ming also tends to turn the toes of his rear foot, in many of the stances, almost forward, contrary to what Yang Cheng-Fu does. Again, differences in performance may reflect different body structures and capacities, helping explain the proliferation of styles.
How can you not? Look at the position of the spine, how the vertebrae seem to be in a slightly different position relative to one another. This is very visible from the shoulder up, and also present down the entire spine, if you look closely. Also examine the extension of these guys' elbow, hip and knee joints. That's the impression given by these images, anyway.
These guys' postures are only alike on the superficial level. No offense, but anyone can see that Mr. Yang is more sung, and Mr. Chen has some slight issues in the neck/shoulder area.
The formula for getting Tai Chi to work is not in the positioning of the body , It is in the quality of movement .It centers around the connection between the particle and the wave, generation of relaxation, the use of the cycle of gravity and momentum, and the transtion back and forth of contraction and expansion through the elasticity of the body. These are the movement elements which produce mastery. One non physical is the sensitivity to emptiness void and space which generates the relaxation . You dont move you.Your last movement produces your next movement. The art of fighting without fighting is based on the art of moving without moving. I move my ankle while doing the form and nothing else."Shoulder duckouts most advanced level found here"on TH-cam - Become the Tao Tai Chi
Just get the Cheng/Smith book and compare. Cheng's form is less dynamic, more relaxed, more upright/erect. Also, Cheng maintained "fair lady's hand" throughout the form with the exception of a very few postures.

@Jahianel I agree. They look great together. Their postures seem almost identical.
On closer examination, there are some fundamental differences in posture; Cheng fu was clearly the master

Many thanks for your explanation. Can you show me a link to what you see as a perfect taijiquan form, please? Grateful!
Thank you, very useful document
Knees gentlemen knees!
It's the hips that get it there though.

请问徐世憲拳友,楊澄甫亲传郑曼青,何以郑氏拳架与楊氏其他弟子如陈微明,汪永泉,董英杰,傅钟文,赵彬等相去甚远,前辈可以不同看法论点?
Great example of teacher and student i would love to see a comparison of Yang Cheng Fu and Chen Man Ching !
没声音,没字幕,看什么?

与杨澄甫一同演练者为许羽生,非陈微明Chen Wei-Ming. 许氏在民国初年对太极拳推广贡献极大.

How can you tell that Cheng Fu is more sung than Wei Ming?
