So the dog grand grandfather was one of my favorite character in the book. He used to be a wizard who was obsessed with immortality so he found a way to slow his age drastically by turning into a dog.
Well, that makes no sense since dog's lives are so much shorter than humans.. he should've become a tree or a turtle... they can live longer than humans

I REALLY didn't expected you to do a "What Happened to" video about "Tara Duncan" someday!!! XD I'll try to answers to some of your questions about the series... 5:02 & 7:24 Tara has 12 years old in the first book but of course she grows up over the books (There are 13 books of "Tara Duncan" but only the 2 first ones were released in America.). The animated series from 2010 sort of takes place between book 7 and book 8. Tara is sent on Earth to hunt Semchanachs (people from Otherworld who comes illegally on Earth for bad reasons). The adventures can be considerated as "canon" but the animated series is still a different media or a spin-off from the books. Sophie, the author, wrote the series bible and the scripts of a few episodes but she let the studio produce the series. That explains why there are some weird details compared to the books or scriptwriting-facilities-elements-typical-of children's-series like this f***ing scene (6:09) where the bad guy's name is written in the footprints of her shoes!! >_< 11:53 Well, Sandra, the mean girl in the animated series, get a lot of memory erasing spells in one episode. And yeah, she is completely confused at the end of this episode because of them. WARNING: Do not abuse memory erasing spells! 18:19 If I ask to others Taraddicts, they're mostly thinking the show is not good and the books are better (I'm kind of an exception because I discovered Tara Duncan thanks to the animated series and there was also a online video game at the time so I'm nicer with this adaptation). Even the author don't very like the series of 2010. 24:46 The series is canceled because 1) it didn't have enough success. Then 2) the French studio Moonscoop was bankrupt a few years later. They tried to make money by making "Code Lyoko Evolution" (a weird live-action that tried to follow the original cartoon story) which had killed the studio for good. RIP Now, Sophie has built her own production studio called "Princess SAM" and created a new animated series in CGI for Tara Duncan. Aimed to a younger target, it's more faithful to the universe of the books even if there's some changes to be enjoyable to youth audiences who don't know the books. The show started this winter in France and Switzerland and recently debuted in Italy. Let's just hope it will be released soon in other countries! Thank you for your new video! You deserve a price for making them so enjoyable and funny! =D PS: Yeah, the opening song "Sortcelière" is a bop!! Go listen it!
Thank you for clarify this. I felt that show started in middle of action with I hate it. Because a lot of information was throwed to the audience like Tara is a wizard and have a pegasus and have chief boy and beast girl from another world and they chasing the bad guys from another world who making chaos. That's a lot to take and I felt that I missed so many stories about Tara's mother or her friends parents. I really hate it when they do that to the audience. And I also discovered Tara Dunkan because of animated series. I though that Tara Dunkan books are only in french, but I didn't knew it was in english, but that would help that time, because my level of english was very low. I also watche that life action Code Lyoko. I didn't like it. They should stay with animated series.
Translation note from the authors bio: her and him are both used which seems odd in English so I figured I’d explain that since I know French (which is what I’m guessing the bio was originally written in). In English when we use a pronoun to designate ownership of an item (ex: her pen) we decide the gender of the pronoun based on the person. (The pen is Emily’s so we say ‘her pen’). But in French (and some other languages) the gender of the pronoun is decided based on the gender of the object. Object gender isn’t really a concept that exists in English, for example the word ‘pen’ in French (stylo) is masculine so you would say ‘the pen’ as ‘le stylo’, using the masculine ‘le’ to mean ‘the’. The same idea applies with ‘his’ and ‘her’ in French. When literally translated ‘se’ is ‘he’ and ‘sa’ is ‘her’ but that often creates what was seen in bio with the inconsistent pronouns. I hope this clears up any confusion anyone had!
I think it's good that folks can be weird and not have it hurt sales... I'm less thrilled that folks can be abusive, publicly and legally acknowledged as being abusive, but the victims can't legally call what they went through "abuse" publicly even if they avoid naming anyone specific... so I agree, the state of celebrity has changed for the worse, but idk if I agree on the why.
i disagree, i believe that things haven't changed (enough) and that's the worst. At least now we publically talk of such mattersand i hope we will see improvement in the future
Or that some of them can just try to destroy their own victims life (even after cutting their finger off) by false accusations and then lie under oath multiple times and deny everthing, saying that their word is worth more than any evidence because of their gender and when they loose - blame it on social media and sexism. Yeah, it's saddening.
The world building in this book absolutely rules. There are two opposing sides in this universe Dragons and Demons, the two met when dragons accidentally invented teleporters and one of them teleported in demon dimension. When demons first interacted with the dragons they discover that If they eat the corpses of dragons they would get a major power bust so demons begun raging wars with the dragons which led to destruction of several worlds such as that of vampires, elves and many other inteligent creatures. Eventually humans got involved and they were a major asset in the fight against demons. Dragons won and took all the survivors of those world and gave them OtherWorld to live in.
there was a cartoon on nickelodeon back in 2017 that was a female version of TMNT called MYSTICONS. I feel like this is right up your alley and would be good for your what happened series.

IT IS books accurate just She’s 17 in the show because it takes place between the books 6 and 7 or something that’s also why the show doesn’t really explain the lore or the backstory of the characters for example in the books Tara dated the grey haired dude and he literally died before to come back to life lmao
It is set in a different timeline actually. The vampire for example appeared tons of times in the books but Tara never met her in the cartoon, unlike her book self.
I read all the novel of this serie. I watched the show and I can compare the two. - In the novel, Manitou is a spellbinder who turn into dog due to a potion for being immortal. In the show, we don't know how Manitou became a dog but... in his dog form, he's not black, he's only brown. - We don't know the past of Tara in this show but in the novel we know that she is the heir of Omois's empire, due to her father. - In the novel, Tara's mother has brown curly hair and brown eyes. She is a "brittle" spellbinder who is kidnapped by Tara's ennemy, Magister when Tara was two years old. Selena is saved by her daugter. In the show, Selena (if Tara's mother takes the name like the novel) is like her daughter (blond hair with white strand of hair and blue eyes). Unlike the novel, Tara's mother is a powerful spellbinder who saved the Earth from vampyr invasion. She disappear in the secret mission (without know if she is deceaded or alive) one year before the show. - Tara, her grandma and her friends live in Rosemond unlike in the novel where they lived in Otherworld or in Tagon (a french south town). - There is real stakes in the novel (wars, invasion, conspiracy) and a real worldbuilding. The show has villains stupids without stakes for the characters (except in the last episode where the defeat means war between the vampyr's Republic and the guetteur).
Oh... I forgot to talk about the novel taken from the show. This little novels adds some elements from the original books series. And modify some elements like the famous scene in 06:09. Master Chem is in symposium due to a semchanach who escape: It's Serena the vampyr. When Cal and Sparrow investigate for the strange attitude of Tara. Serena comes and Sparrow reconize her. Later, they return to the Videoclub in order to find the photo of Tara's mother (the cure of Serena's spell).
So I actually have the first book in the series And yes, she does refer to herself as a princess on the title page of all places lol Also the book was really good when I read it 10 years ago, would recommend
I remember reading some of the author's blog when i was pre-teen, she sounded kind, funny and a little big exentric. Having an author responding to young readers's mail & questions in my own language was really something big back then. The comparison between her work and the Harry Potter saga did not seem to bother her, she seemed chill about it.
Hi, we were surprised to see a video released nowadays about the first Tara adaptation! Thanks for your review, we can't wait to see the one you'll do about the new adaptation we're working on! Have a nice day! Keep making great videos!
Okay, but as someone who grew up reading the Tara Duncan books (I lived in a French speaking household). The books take you on a LIFE CHANGING journey. There are 14 (main) books, and Tara is 19 by the end of it all (with kids LMAO). But I also loved the show growing up, I just wished that it was similar to the books, because you are right in saying the plots of the episodes don't really align with the main series. I also want to say that although I cannot link the source. But I vividly remember and interview with Princess Sophie where she mentioned not being happy with how the show turned out, due to not having much control. Anyways, loved the vid and getting to hear someone talk about Tara Duncan, because I thought I was the only person who remembered it. I could talk for HOURS about this series as it was my childhood.
8:08 they are probably referring to another Beauty and the Beast remake. Since the studio that made Code Lyoko is French-based, there are a few versions of Beauty and the Beast that were made for French audiences over the years (no, not "bootlegs" or rip-offs, but artistic interpretations since the story is originally a French story)
Crap I thought he was talking about Tara from Teen Titans! I was really excited I thought he meant like there were comics that said what happened to her after the show got unfairly canceled and turned into the monstrosity that it is now.
OMG i was obsessed with these books when I was younger… btw from what I remember the show is actually accurate to the books, it’s just that it goes over what happened in a time skip, which is why it’s not mentioned in any synopsis. Because none of the events were ever actually in the books, it was just like « yeah we were sent to earth for a few months as a punishment anyway we’re back now wassup ». That’s why they’re 17 and not 12, it happens way later in the story. And them playing magic cops is mentioned in the books! The interesting thing is that it was clearly ment for people who had read the books since they don’t bother to introduce anything or anyone, but like you said no one who actually read them really enjoyed the show. I’ve always loved the opening song tho (French version) and if you didn’t know it has a long version and a music video!
I don't care what people say to me shows like Tara duncan ,huntik and winx club were my childhood and gave me amazing memories also that tara duncan opening is a banger
Let me tell you I was a BIG fan of this cartoon in my childhood. I had my own Mary Sue character and everything. I wasn’t even European or anything, my mom just downloaded these shows on her shitty old kindle fire 😭
That comment about Chaotic got to me. Earlier this week I had the urge to start rewatching Chaotic. Also I have never heard of this series whatsoever but I might give the books a shot
French TV is a nightmare for any children's shows that aren't episodic. Stations demand the ability to play things in whatever order they want. This is why Code Lyoko and Totally Spies don't really have a "start" episode until LATER seasons. Same for Miraculous Ladybug, we dont get the "how" Marinette got her kwami until the end of the first season.
As an early fan of the book series, I personally took the show as a way to attract other kids into the Tara Duncan universe. At least it explained to me why they don't explain anything in the show because responses are in the books ;-) ;-). For the age changes, maybe they wanted to insert the show somewhere late in the first cycle book series continuity (Tara is 40 by now) ??
I would watch Tara Duncan every Saturday morning before going to my dad. This brings back nostalgia. I would Wake up at 6am before anybody else and watch it. Good times.
2:51 idk about that, a few of the creators of Miraculous Ladybug aren't great people but the show is still a hit and the fandom sort of keeps watching the show regardless. Also Tara Duncan's animation reminds me so much of Witch
It did not rip it off per se, it was merely inspired. Even if it did had some aspects of the worst witch, it’s most likely unintentionally. How do you know she ripped them off?
@@nicky2stars I don't necessarily agree with the ripped off part, but I do still appreciate the worst witch for what it was, and I was just glad that Negative Legend acknowledged it.
Us Chaotic fans might still be waiting, but I discovered Chaotic is on Peacock of all things while browsing to see if it had anything worthwhile to watch. So the are at least doing something with the franchise atm and not letting it stagnate. (Also the official TH-cam channel is still getting different language dubs uploaded to it, which helps keep me optimistic)
I actually bought the first book shortly after it came out and never got around to reading it. XD I ended up donating it a couple of years ago when it became clear that they weren't going to publish the series beyond book 2 in english.
From what I understood, watching the show and reading the books around the same time, there was in the books a period where Tara was kinda banished on Earth which wasn't elaborated on in the books, thus leaving the show a part of her life to fill without contradictions... omg I used to love the opening song of the show so so much >w
If you're looking for more European urban fantasy cartoons, can I suggest you check out Monster Allergy? It's an Italian/French/German cartoon based on a long-running comic book series of the same name, and I've got a lot of fond memories of the world they created. Or, also good: Di-Gata defenders. It's got a BUNCH of lore and magic, and from what I remember complex and some morally grey characters,
Oh its fun from what i remmber bout monster allergy, kinda buy like storyline but th magic guardian of a world that can see an learn powers, a trope. But nice monster friends.
i love when you talk about shows i have never heard of. i love your channel i didnlt realize it had been 8 months sicne the last time i watched one of your videos
If you like shows with good world building I recommend Di-Gata Defenders It just throws you in there with no explanation (And the story is much better than the animation trust me) start kinda weak but gets better as it progresses and you can watch it on TH-cam or Prime video
I remember as a kid being a fan of this show and then seeing fanart of it on deviantart and being so confused that none of the characters looked the same, the in-show characters weren't anywhere, and everyone was speaking french or Spanish. I'm still a bit sad today that the show didn't get more love cause I honestly love the anime-esque artstyle! I love that so many shows in the early 2000s were experimenting and using anime as a base for their cartoons (like Teen titans, kappa mikey, totally spies, etc). However, this show is such a pain to watch as an adult, like you said, it's very formulaic and the characters have weird tone (ex: Tara is just mean to her friends for like no reason and idk if it's because of weird dialogue writing or what)
I'm always thinking like No one even knows the series I watched and loved as a kid for example Tara Duncan, huntik, code lyoko and then you make a video on it.... Honestly I love it continue making amazing videos and informing us about the shows we like 😅😂💜💜💜
YO a few months back I was desperately searching and failing to find this show I remember from my childhood, and now I just randomly stumble upon it through this video?? I had like the vaguest memories of it, but I'm pretty sure I remembered and searched for the name Tara but didn't find it somehow. Although I did think it had a weird acronym thing going on like T.A.R.A or something for some reason, might've just been thinking of W.I.T.C.H. The mansion and supernatural elements were all I remembered but I'm so glad to finally have found it!
I loved this show when I was kid, I couldn’t get the English version of the theme song out of my head for so long (sad there was never a full version). Love that your talking about it, also Sparrow was always my favorite, and the dog grandpa.
the show is a tie-in with the book, it's supposed to happen between two books where Tara is pretty much exiled on Earth for plot reasons, hence why the show acts as if the audience knows everything already, and why she is 17 and not 12, because it's like, 5 books in already haha. Also why we never see Otherworlds! I was a big fan of the books as kid, but didn't get to watch the show all that much. It was wild tbh, in the later parts they acknowledge that Tara's magic is so powerful that it is likely to kill her at some point and everybody had to accept the idea she wouldn't live long and it was a casual canteen conversation that is never brought again. There are two spinoff books that are published fanfiction, straight up, genuine fanfiction Sophie A.M has picked up with the authorisation of the author and got published officially with his name on the cover. There's a whole book where an evil version of her reigns over the world and everyone is poor miserable and dying and it was peak fiction for me
Harry Potter didn’t rip off The Worst Witch. The books are wildly different. Might as well claim that Star Wars ripped off Star Trek because they both have spaceships
Me a bit confused as to what he meant by that….so could you clarify it in different words just for me to see if what he meant is the same as what I thought he meant? ……uggggh
I know how you feel about wanting to see if the two copies were different. I had to physically stop myself from rebuying a series by robin hobb just because they updated the covers. I was unable to stop myself from buying the same series I'd bought...almost 20 years ago now, only a few years ago because it was "re-released" as a trilogy (hypothetically it's getting a show made so they're expecting people to care about the series again, even though the first volume was from the 1980's. So now i still have the copies of the books almost as old as me as well as the new print 3-in-1. I, like, don't even have time for books anymore but still visit the "local" barnes and noble at least 3 times a year. And at least manga can be read in 30 mins to an hour (glances at pile of books I still need to add to my excel library and sighs)
I used to watch Tara Duncan a lot on Netflix I think or was it Amazon Prime I don't remember but I do know I watched it I also watched it on TH-cam. I love the show, Tara and her friends, the storyline and the theme song. Also I never read the books I just watched the show I didn't know it came from books.
I remember reading Tara Duncan in french and I loved it at the time (my first language is french), it was a good reading at the time but never got to watch the animated series since I kind of outgrew the book when they started animating it. I think the book and the story is really meant for really young demographic (10 to 13yo) and as an intro to fantasy worlds.
The second cover, Tara has a much cooler outfit in my opinion. I probably would of liked this show if it was on when I was younger. The clips of the new show looks cool. I would like to see it when it comes out.
Nothing beats waiting for a new season for a show that been dead for years but next year is when they will announce a new season of Huntik or Class of the Titans.

Omg there are actual people who remember this show?? I haven't ever seen anyone talk about it or even mention it. Ever. None of my friends are aware this show exists. I thought nobody but me had watched it when they were kids lol
Oh hey i remember this show, it used to be on the kabillion channel though my siblings used to watch kabillion shows on our TV's "on demand" feature since that channel wasn't something you could just GO ONTO and watch episodes as they air (i'm assuming it's because we live in the US and it's a french/canadian channel). We were never really into tara duncan though, we were more into code lyoko and bunny maloney; we DID watch one episode out of curiousity though we never finished it. I remember REALLY wanting to like the show and one time one of our dogs had puppies, we decided to keep two of the puppies and we were in the backyard deciding on names for them; i had suggested naming one of them "tara duncan" though my mom shot that idea down because apparently i have a cousin or something named terry and she had a cat named duncan lmao (We ended up naming the puppies theo and nugget in case you're wondering)
definitely going to give the book a try after this video! if you ever revisit wizard101....my condolences. the old content is still good but its recent stuff is like a mix bag.
Found that one on the internet around 2012 never was able to actual watch it but i remember looking everywhere on youtube to find the episodes ( I didnt know other streaming sites existed back at 12yo)
I watched the show in French it's literally my childhood and I loved it ,especially the opening which is amazing but I dislike the new 3d remake maybe it's because I miss that old year 2000 cartoon aesthetic 😅❤
French (ex)fan here ! I confirme, I watched the show when it first came out, huge disapointment. Like hu-ge, in fact the show take place in a sort of alternate timeline/universe after the fifth or sixth book (I'm not sure anymore, it has been a long time since I last read it) where Tara after some shennanigans (ghost invasion, hundreds of deats, problems and other possessions) is banished back on Earth. Pretty light punition if you ask me. Except that she comes back on Otherworld, because of course she does.

That explains why there are some weird details compared to the books or scriptwriting-facilities-elements-typical-of children's-series like this f***ing scene (6:09) where the bad guy's name is written in the footprints of her shoes!! >_<
11:53 Well, Sandra, the mean girl in the animated series, get a lot of memory erasing spells in one episode.
RIP
Now, Sophie has built her own production studio called "Princess SAM" and created a new animated series in CGI for Tara Duncan.
PS: Yeah, the opening song "Sortcelière" is a bop!! Go listen it!
Thank you ✨✨✨
Thank you for clarify this.

Translation note from the authors bio:
her and him are both used which seems odd in English so I figured I’d explain that since I know French (which is what I’m guessing the bio was originally written in).
It's not “se”, it's “son”

IT IS books accurate just
She’s 17 in the show because it takes place between the books 6 and 7 or something that’s also why the show doesn’t really explain the lore or the backstory of the characters for example in the books Tara dated the grey haired dude and he literally died before to come back to life lmao

After YEARS of trying to find this one show I was OBSESSED with as a kid, here it is! Tara Duncan.
Yes
DVD stores were indeed fun. Great place to hang when the bookstores were unavailable.
So I actually have the first book in the series
And yes, she does refer to herself as a princess on the title page of all places lol
Also the book was really good when I read it 10 years ago, would recommend
I remember reading some of the author's blog when i was pre-teen, she sounded kind, funny and a little big exentric. Having an author responding to young readers's mail & questions in my own language was really something big back then. The comparison between her work and the Harry Potter saga did not seem to bother her, she seemed chill about it.
Tara Duncans Opening was perfect nobody can say otherwise XD
Agreed
I HAD NO IDEA OTHER PEOPLE KNEW ABOUT THIS SERIES!!! SO GLAD YOU DID A VID ON THIS ;D you covered basically all of my childhood at this point
Hi, we were surprised to see a video released nowadays about the first Tara adaptation! Thanks for your review, we can't wait to see the one you'll do about the new adaptation we're working on! Have a nice day! Keep making great videos!
Your videos always either introduce me to something new or just hit me straight in the nostalgia, HARD.
The intro song for this show is a absolute banger. I definitely recommend giving it a listen
I was really excited I thought he meant like there were comics that said what happened to her after the show got unfairly canceled and turned into the monstrosity that it is now.
the show takes place after the books Tara doesn't visit the otherworld because she got banished after she started the apocalypse... twice
You reminded me that this show existed, I grew up watching it, I seriously forgot it existed
Also I have never heard of this series whatsoever but I might give the books a shot
hell yeah for the Worst witch shoutout. ive been saying that for decades now.
When I say I gasped and could hear the theme song playing in my head, I mean it.
Have you heard of this show called Mysticons I think it fits perfectly for the type of shows you cover
*cough* also the Worst Witch which Harry Potter ripped off *cough*
Someone give this guy an award, I loved the Worst Witch.
It did not rip it off per se, it was merely inspired. Even if it did had some aspects of the worst witch, it’s most likely unintentionally. How do you know she ripped them off?
@@nicky2stars getting inspired by different media is not allowed by the logic of these people 🤦
@@nicky2stars I don't necessarily agree with the ripped off part, but I do still appreciate the worst witch for what it was, and I was just glad that Negative Legend acknowledged it.
Did you have to remind us that the Chaotic reboot is in development hell? Twist the knife, man
I really loved this show when it first came out, you have no idea how happy it makes me to see you cover it
I actually bought the first book shortly after it came out and never got around to reading it.
I've been waiting for you to cover this

The shows that had the same artstyle literally inspired my artstyle along with My scene and artists like Hayden Williams and Nell Brinkley
Wait a second, this show gets a reboot but code lyoko doesn’t
I remember as a kid being a fan of this show and then seeing fanart of it on deviantart and being so confused that none of the characters looked the same, the in-show characters weren't anywhere, and everyone was speaking french or Spanish. I'm still a bit sad today that the show didn't get more love cause I honestly love the anime-esque artstyle! I love that so many shows in the early 2000s were experimenting and using anime as a base for their cartoons (like Teen titans, kappa mikey, totally spies, etc). However, this show is such a pain to watch as an adult, like you said, it's very formulaic and the characters have weird tone (ex: Tara is just mean to her friends for like no reason and idk if it's because of weird dialogue writing or what)
That was an amazing Patreon pitch and I absolutely love it!
Anyone notice that Tara Duncan looks like Terra from Teen Titans?
Even their names are a little same!
NOBODY I TALKED TO EVER KNEW WHAT TARA DUNCAN WAS OMGG

Is it just me or do i just sit at my device and stare into one of their videos so intrigued? just me ok
Okay this is a month late but I LOVE the absolutely SHAMELESS plug to your patreon XD
That theme song joke had me laughing so hard 😂
There's a whole book where an evil version of her reigns over the world and everyone is poor miserable and dying and it was peak fiction for me
i really loved this show when i was younger! this reminded me sm of my childhood!!😭
……uggggh
I think what was meant was Harry Potter is incredibly derivative of stories that hit the same tropes in way more interesting ways.
Great works as always, Negative Legend! When it comes to French production, I hope you will cover Team Galaxy and/or Galactic Football next 😁
