How to Buy Wood from a Timber Yard / Merchant

  • Buying wood from a timber merchant or lumber yard can be intimidating if you've never done it before but it's nothing to worry about - they've generally got a much better selection of wood than the big box-shifters and the timber tends to be of much better quality. Today I'm off to pick up a small order of plywood and quadrant mouldings. I'll probably do a few more videos about this - this is just part 1 so pop any questions in the comments. Enjoy!

    Hi. We're the shop in video. So pleased you use us and we rely on the public as much as trade customers. I couldn't agree with the sentiment in the video more. I run a Merchant, yet am scared myself of going into other unfamiliar builders merchants, it's really daunting, and we'll do all we can to try to avoid that feeling. Drop us an email, phone up, or call in and just be honest, say if you are unsure of sizes or types of timber and we'll do our best to help, even with the smallest of orders. Most of the stuff isn't on display, it's a small sales area, and you'd never know we have it without asking a member of staff. I don't want to try to use this as an advert or sales pitch, just thanks for featuring us.

    Nice one Andy! What sort of ply was that, out of interest? I've made a few things with exterior ply recently - such as the work bench, and a new kitchen table top, but it's not great quality compared with the marine ply I used to buy. Trouble is, my local timber merchants don't tend to stock it. I think I need to go the extra mile to get the decent stuff, like you!

    • @GosforthHandyman
      @GosforthHandyman  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's just exterior grade ply but I've found the quality of ply varies dramatically between suppliers. B&Q up here were doing lovely softwood ply - paint grade A side - but I haven't been there for a while so not sure if they're still doing it. Might do a vid about it! 😀 Loved your last come-back vid btw. 👍😂

Places in uk you can get decent quality ply for furniture making etc. It seems like it is a closely guarded secret; to get decent birch ply If you do find some place they want you to order a pallet load :( we seem to be at a major disadvantage in the uk a complete guide would be great. First time I’ve watched this video to the end, I’m glad I did. That view is stunning, and as you said in your commentary, the history is amazing. I took my mum and dad down to Newcastle, for a day out, (I was trying out my new camera, that was around 1998ish), and they loved the scenery. When I lived in Leeds, we came up the A1, and it was great, not so great in the winter mind! Apparently our family has distant connections to Northumberland! Some good advice about buying timber as well!

    How do they sell hard woods in England .?...in the US its per board foot and here it's per cubic meter . If I new I wanted 4 lengths of white oak 7' long 6" wide and 1" thick .how do you work out what you need like. Any time I ring a timber merchant they want a cubic foot measurement .i tend to stick with place that you can actually walk in and pick boards but then the problem is while selecting wood I haven't a clue how much it's going to cost because everything is priced in cubic foot.like would a board 12' long 12" wide and an inch thick be 1 cubic foot🙄
    Or A pice of wood 1 meter x 1 meter X 1 meter is a cubic foot yes but useless in most situation. Thanks anyway confused.com

    • @GosforthHandyman
      @GosforthHandyman  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lol it's a bit random over here - normally priced by the linear metre or 'per length'. So you'll generally buy a 3.6m length (for example) but get charged per metre. 👍

    Slightly disappointed you didn't talk about standard sizes. I'm new to the whole thing, I barely know anything when it comes to wood. I specifically looked up standard sizes to see if there was a TH-cam video explaining shapes and sizes and stumbled across this video. Luckily someone helped me order my wood from a timber merchant, however I would like to learn for myself and then I won't need to bother others to try and find things out. I was told that for expense cost I would want "standard size", rather than paying more just to have them cut it, when in fact it could be cheaper to buy a longer length and cut it myself and I am still in pocket plus I have extra wood. In short I am desperately trying to learn these sizes so I can save money by paying for what I need and if I can simply cut the wood to size myself but remain in pocket I would. Cheers.

    • @GosforthHandyman
      @GosforthHandyman  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately there's no such thing as international standard sizes - it varies from country to country. Most wood yards will do a number of cuts for free if you ask them though so I wouldn't worry about it too much. Just ask the wood yard what sizes they supply in and they'll normally help you. 👍

      Timber is usually based on the sawn size, in imperial dimensions - 100 x 50 would be 4" x 2"; 38 x 25 = 1.5" x 1" etc. If you're buying planed timber, the quoted size is the same with the word 'planed' after. The wood, however is smaller than that due to the amount removed by the planer - so 25 x 50 planed would be around 21 x 44 in reality. If you asked for 21 x 44 they would look at you funny. (B&Queue / Wickes, etc. quote the finished size.)
      It's usually sold by length, but standard lengths are not round metres - they're usually multiples of 300mm (a hangover from feet): 2.4m (8') 3.6m (12') 4.2m (14') etc. It's worth some thought beforehand about which is the most efficient length to get, depending on what you want to get out of it.
      Sheet materials are a minefield - plywood still tends to be 2440 x 1220mm (the old 8' x 4'); some things are 2400 x 1200 (plasterboard for example) which our local merchant has referred to as "metric eight by fours". (I just wish I'd known before I'd put the studwork up :( ). It always pays to ask in this case, and I would imagine that they're used to it.
      Plywood thicknesses also tend to reflect imperial sizes: 3mm (1/8") 6mm (1/4") 9mm or 9.5mm (3/8") 12mm (1/2") 15mm (5/8") 19mm (3/4") & 25mm (1"). Most common thicknesses are 3, 6, 9,12, & 19 mm.
      I *think* MDF is similar, but the 19mm is replaced by 18mm.
      If you're getting sheet material sawn to size, you will need to think about how it will be cut. It will almost certainly be cut on a panel saw so you only get straight cuts the full length or width of the sheet - you can't get them to cut 'L'' shapes, for example. The cut pieces can be put back on and sawn again, so you can get all your panels cut for a shelving unit, for example - One cross cut at the height of the unit; another at the width of the unit. 3 rip cuts on the first piece to give you two side panels; 5 rip cuts on the second piece to give you top, bottom & 2 shelves. Ours charges 50p/cut for this sort of thing. The cuts are usually very accurate, clean and square. The edges of the boards won't be as good as the saw cuts so don't lay your panels out right to the edge of the board - allow for a narrow 'clean-up' cut first. Don't go at busy times for cut to size!
      Ours used to charge to the half sheet for cut to size, so you didn't need to buy a full sheet and take the offcut home (if you didn't want to.)
      Hope that is some help - I'm sure GFH can do a better job ;)
