I’d love a series where you go through matching your favorite rack gear and settings to Fractal blocks. I know a lot of them end up in your blocks library… but it would be cool to see your process
Long live the rack units! I have it since some years and it is still up to date the most feature rich rack delay you can find. And awesome sounding. They are pretty expensive on ebay. Another Insider tip is the yamaha magic stomp. An ugly small box you nearly can not use without a software programmer. But when I heard it, I bought two of them for my studio. Not only it sounds great but it also has 8 delay lines among other programs. If you like Allan Holdsworth - that's the sound! It's the successor of the yamaha ud stomp.
Best "Delay Face" on the internet. Thanks Brian! Have this baby as well as the AM8kr. You gotta wanna program it for sure. But if you're used to Lexicon's or the like you'll handle it. It sounds great imo.
Mate, I don't quite know whether I subscribe to you for some of the most on-point gear rundowns and fair analysis on the interwebs or the epic face contortions, both deliver exceptional quality! Great to hear more about this unit and some decent examples of the sound it can crank out (that chorus/flanging was quite sublime, especially on those Ozzy riffs, and that last harmonic squeal of yours - goddamn!). I now deeply regret not picking one up from an old mate back in the day... ARGH! Am satisfied at the moment with a SDD3000 and 2000 in the rack right now, alongside some other pieces of collected-over-the-years rack-tastic gear, but this definitely makes me if I see one of these again I'll surely have to take a closer squiz and possibly hand over some more of the filthy lucre from the wallet. Great content as always 🤘
I grew up and started playing guitar in the “rack era”…my first rack unit was an Art ProVerb..No parameters, just 100 Reverb presets and a mix knob…I still have a few of my old rack pieces, and while they do sound pretty good, but every time I plug into one,I think,I am so glad I have a Fractal…quieter,no glitches, way easier to program, and pristine sound….Fun to look back though..it just makes you realize how far tech has come..
KORG SDD1200 Dual Digital Delay was my first love as far as delays go...I could patch together many cool effects, right before the multi efx boom hit in 1989 :) Get one of those, Leon!
I wonder what made them say "instead of putting the information on two rows like normal units, let's make the few characters really big" :D I feel like that makes digital displays so much more understandable. Perhaps the best example being the MPX1's effect chain visualisation. And I must say, submenus are also really nice thing in digital units, like dividing the massive delay into separate delay menus. Too bad the rack units were already pretty much out of the game when they figured out the tech. In some sense it has a similar tonality as I've come to expect from Rocktrons, having a lot of brightness in the sounds. Not bad at all, just certain vibe, compared to some units that have lopass/cut off pretty low, I guess due to the bits.
@LeonTodd No nightmare!!!! It's fun playing around and programming!!!! Once you find a few things you there is a BIG SENSE of accomplishment. Let's hear this combined with our beloved ADA MP-1 and our beloved yellow Strat!!!! "D"
I have a Rocktron Xpression Rack Unit, very nice its allot like this Korg. IT was very expensive for its time you can now buy one for around $175 Its really nice for Recording
What a dream this is, best sounds ive ever heard from a rackmount ..is it that PRS or what. You could easily play 2 hour concerts like Vai or satch better than a blue dream ...this fits you so well it gives you a signature sound you can call yours along with all your other ones Leon , time for you and Lupin to start making those dreams come true mate ! 🌏 😺 This has a real rare crystal clear pristine sound that you can play anything with and sound fantastic.. lots of character tone for you to make faces with 😅
Yep that's a surprise fun unit, with you getting to play with a range of rack units from multiple era's, have you noticed a progression in interfaces from say the 80's to today's choices on the market?
Kinda high maintenance, but sure is pretty. Those chorus effects rival or even beat some of the dedicated chorus pedals I've heard. I admit that I'm spoiled by modern interfaces, though, so I'm not sure I'd have the patience to drive through all that.
@@LeonTodd I know A/B comparisons aren’t really your thing, but I’d imagine the differences in the amp modeling would have to be pretty drastic by now? I’d be interested in hearing if they are dialed in similarly, how close they’d be in a mix.
@@lyricbread be curious to compare it with some other new modellers too. I loved the way the Ultra sounded - the first time I heard one was a "no way, this CAN'T be doing all this"
I wrote papers on a single lcd screen typewriter in college. Feeling triggered by the interminable scrolling… Glorious 8 taps fully modifiable? Nightmare fuel. “All the things” but you get RSI from programming it. 😂 You are very brave mate.
I deeply love rack gear and its flexibility. But the sheer size and price it implies to build a proper rack setup is unreasonable in today's market where everything is over priced. Even just buying an axe fx ultra for the effects would be a budget piece compared to buying an mp-1 and a jmp-1 and a switcher and (insert multiple effects units and mixers and switchers) get a decent setup going.
Leon I love your work, but.. .YOU SUCK!!! I've been looking for one of these for years, now the price will tripple.. if Brian want to sell it I'm intrested and on the Gold Coast
Let's Go Back To The Refrigerator Racks. Awesome Tones!
I’ve been putting mine together for forty years. Just need a couple more items and then it’ll be finished. I swear. 😂👍
I've had an SDE1000 in my rack since 1978! Brilliant delay tones in this episode. Thanks Leon!
I have that old Digital Delay too, as many do, for the "always on echo", like ´Beach, Vandenberg, Moore, Page etc :) Any tricks and tips?

Great combo - the screen is an upgrade from the Lex stuff at least!

Bringing to mind Ronni Le Tekrø's tone on the old TNT records
That brings back memories...
Wow - now I’m in my Time Machine listening to some 90s TNT
Love RLT and TNT. What a great player

The tone on that opening jam, holy smokes dude. Sounds killer!
I must say, your tone makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.
Hey Leon, don't know if you go back to your older vids but still reckon this is one of the best sounding machines you've ever demoed.
Beautiful machine hey
Man that was some killer riffage! Once you get used to it I'm sure it's definitely worth using🔥🎸🔥
This is just glorious❤

welcome to the in the know DL8k geek crew😁
It lived up to the hype bro! So fun
great job-the pre eqs are mighty nice too🤤

Those some synthwave licks I hear? Little riff from The Midnight? I love it! ❤
You got it!
I have a Rocktron Xpression Rack Unit, very nice its allot like this Korg. IT was very expensive for its time

I remember those!
That Midnight intro... juicy!
My favorite from back then was my alesis quadraverb gt such great tones from it !
Great units

Great demo. I got the multi effect version of this, Korg AM8000R, it is also great. Not to mention it looks awesome.
Love the AM - great sounds but a little easier to dial in

You played 'Crystalline', aiming to test your rack ! Legend
Looooove The Midnight
what a beauty👌🏻
Great demo, as always, Leon👍
Now you need to hunt down a Yamaha D5000 and make the comparison with the Korg, and see which one is the king 🤔
Oooh yes! Been trying to find a D5000 for a few years now
I miss those LED displays on the new stuff these days, especially foot controllers, the LCDs are not as instantly readable in gig situations.
Welcome to AOR from 1988 😂 fucking awesome
❤ for hooky.
This thing would do my head in.
Sounds good though

Sounds amazing! The playing is LA studio-top notch. Damn.
What's the backing tracks you're using?
I bought Crystalline by The Midnight - I bought their stems from bandcamp!
That Korg sounds awesome, but setting it up reminds me of early modeling amps and effects pedals, you know paralysis by analysis.
Big time
And there was me, thinking the Edge used DD7's.
The Midnight!
best part.... Cat Cam
Nice work on The Midnight! Is it me or does this unit sound like there is a compressor, without the actual compressor?
There are some really nice sounds here. Do you think it does anything that couldn't be done in the Axe-FX III?
The Multitap Delay in the Axe has 4 taps per block so with 2 of them you'd be able to cover most of this
Leon, do you still have that OG Axe-FX? It’d be cool to revisit those tones and do a direct comparison to where we are today with Cygnus-X3.
I do! I've been cleaning/organising a lot since I got back and thought to myself "I've been meaning to do a video with that for the past 3 years now!"
@@LeonTodd I know A/B comparisons aren’t really your thing, but I’d imagine the differences in the amp modeling would have to be pretty drastic by now? I’d be interested in hearing if they are dialed in similarly, how close they’d be in a mix.

How does it compare to Rocktron intellifex 8 tap delay?
Great video as always👍🏻
It's got finer control over the structure and parameters
Better than 2290? That’s crazy talk mister. 😂
Heresy right?! :p
Here in italy there is 1 for 600 euros.. For 750 i could have an axe fx ii... So..
Exactly - prices are crazy!
Didn't indicate the model in the video title... this is bad for TH-cam algorithms)
great video!
if you are into synthwave + shredguitar = shredwave have a listen to Ultraboss. might be up your alley;)
The weirdest UI choice in that thing is the Power screw.
Hahaha I can't unsee that!
Can u put out those jams somewhere as a MP3 file, please?

Great Jam! Any chance of knowing what the backing track is?
"Crystalline" by The Midnight
@@LeonTodd ahhh, thanks man. Love the channel 🙂
Leon, if it is NOT coming from an AXE-FX III, it is no good! lol 😜
😁
That is a great unit.
7th!
