  • How much does it cost?
In this video, I will give you 5 tips on how to travel as cheaply as possible in 2022/2023. Most of you think that just because I have a TH-cam channel or sponsors I can travel whatever I want without thinking about money, right? I wish to be like that but the reality is different, especially now, when the whole world is changed and inflation is rising every day.
I have a video on this topic, but it is already 4 years old and I think that it is time for an upgrade. I still believe in the same principles and I am going to list them here, but I will also add some new ones that might help you make the right decisions. So let's begin!

I totally stand behind the ~100E / day to travel across the EU. Did it this year in September and you are pretty much spot on. That is including passage and lodging in more expensive countries, like Austria or Switzerland. One VERY important tip, in my opinion, is that you MUST take into account the local shops closure time. You might be forced to go to a rather expensive restaurant to get a meal and a beer late in the afternoon, or pay extra in a gas station for lack of other options, while you could get the same or better from a grocery store for less money, provided you get to your target area before 18:00 (in most countries).
Again, thank you so much for your videos! Since I followed your advice on "how to get permission" back in 2017 I've been to 24 countries and 333 cities up to date :)
Also, out of curiosity, have you noticed that raising your hand in salute is a lost art across the EU?

I just came off a 1900 mile (2900 km) ride through Germany, Luxembourg, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Switzerland, France. It was epic - last week of August and 10 days in September. I rode alone and avoided road that were wider than 2 lanes when i could or did not push at higher speeds. My old BMW Motorcycle at 70 to 90 kph was very fuel efficient getting better than 24 kms per liter. I stayed at small hotels and decent hostels with included breakfasts. Saw amazing things and did what I wanted including nice dinners and a beer. Gas was pricey. I tried to avoid big cities and instead embraced local flavor and smaller great regional towns. I averaged 110 euros a day for everything including museums, fees, coffees and treats. I did not pick up a speeding or parking ticket, felt my bike was not in danger ever nor did I ever feel i miss out on a thing. I was always clean, well sorted and safe. Next time I will pack even lighter, drop my big hard bags and take more time in places I may only pass once. I would rather leave the tent behind than miss out in the comfort of a good bed and nice breakfast for 15 or 20 euros more in Europe. (I can always motorcycle tent camp here in Western US which is a whole different thing.) I can not wait to go back next Spring.
One day, I will meet Pavlin and buy him great dinner to thank him for this great channel that lights a fire and wise adventure riding encouragement he promotes.

Just one side note, after some research: wild camping in Spain is not legal, only in certain areas, if you get caught fines go from 30 to 3000 euro ! ! If you want to keep your travel costs in check, beware of this. Otherwise another great video :)

I found out on ACT Pyrenees in September that camping outside high season was very affordable. And it helps your budget to get bread, cheese, olives and red wine in a supermarket. And start your morning with muesli. A basic holiday, yes. But perfect in sunshine. The "cheap" French petrol helped as well.
Thanks for your sound tipps and tricks, Pavlin. Günter from Nürnberg/Germany,

Come to Canada. Much cheaper is a real possibility. I rarely pay for a camp spot. Just pitch my tent or set up my hammock in the wils which we have lots of.

Thank you Parkin. I like to add to use booking/Expedia etc… for research. Check few dates ahead near your next destination the hotel rates. If there is a exhibition/concert/evenement prices will be already high. Avoid that destination, if you can. You will not find a cheap room anyway. Furthermore book direct : check in als walk inn. you usually get a better deal if the owner/receptIonist is aware that he does not pay any commission to those sites. If no,deal is possible you can always book online at the spot.

I would also stay in hostels in Europe, the price is close to camping prices and I save time by not needing to pitch tents. also hostel staff can direct you to great places around town

Man, I spent 4300 euros on my 31 days round trip of Greece in 2019. 600 euros only for ferries. And it was in september, off seazon.
Imagine doing that trip this year in august.
    4500 km : Giurgiu (Romania) - Pella - Ioannina - Zakynthos - Ancient Olympia - Kalatama - Sparta - Mycene - Pireus - Creta - Santorini - Atena - Sounio - Delphi - Termopile - Platamon - Meteora - Kavala - Giurgiu.
Back then I thought that 1.3 euro per liter was pretty expensive for petrol. Remember those days?

Bang on advise. the tenting days are over, especially in Asia where I live. Riding speds is also accurate. Speed is the most expensive commodity in the world, plus you see less. Motorcycle travelers are looked upon as heroes but never to forget that they have fat wallets. Still, i am careful and travel that way

Very interesting topic, it all depends on your lifestyle and how much you spend on accommodation. In Sweden you can sleep for free in your tent in The forest, in Germany you need a campsite that small thing makes it more expensive. In Thailand you can stay in a hotel for less than you spend on a campsite in Denmark. What about Bulgaria can you camp for free or do you need a campsite and what will it cost for a motorcycle? It’s interesting to hear from different countries.

I’m currently travelling by motorcycle in India. Here are some costs, in USD:
Purchased local dual sport bike: $1,400 (will sell later, Hero Xpulse 200)
    Petrol: $1.25/L
    Mileage: 30 km/L
Bed for the night: $6 (ranges, but that’s typical)
Meal: $2.5 (ranges, but that’s typical)
    Toll roads: $0 for motorcycles
Insurance: $0 included in cost of bike
    Oil Change: $4.50
    Flight + Visa: depends
Border district permits: $5 for up to 2 weeks each
Money aside, northern India has some of the best ADV riding around.
Worth it to plan a trip here!

If you ride outside the high tourist season, booking accommodation about 1h in advance is good way exactly because of the last minute deals. Wild camping is illegal in many countries, so best to check the legislation of the countries you'll pass through. When I started planning my last trip, I too thought I will camp every other day, but after checking the laws, I did not even bring the camping gear. My reasoning was, if I will need to pay anyway, I'd rather have electricity and a roof over my head.

Thanks for the sensible talk on how to travel on a budget.
But what about income along the way?
How many TH-cam subscribers and viewers does a motorcycle adventure channel need to make a living on the road? Itchy Boots is probably doing just fine with 1.4 million subscribers, but she's the exception. - How many are needed?
And how much more expensive will the journey be when you also have to produce content and operate a TH-cam channel? How many subscribers do you have to have just to break even?

If money grew on trees you couldn't shake enough off right now. Affects us all everywhere. Still do it within one's means. Adjust the distance expense to suit the cash needed. In USA I estimate it could cost 200 to 250 dollars a day. Fuel is affordable compared to other places. Anywhere from $3.00 to 6.00 a gallon so not bad compared to other locations. Rooms are crazy expensive ($100-200) a nite so is camping (30 to 40 dollars). Park fees, stay away ridiculous. BLM land out west or National Forest land is generally free or minimal charge. It may put me in camper truck for a while. Pavlin, Wise advice for those who don't know.
