I have an RG 350 and saw that you couldn't pull the bar up very far. Mine was the same. When I modded it I noticed the incredible amount of paint in the neck pocket. When I removed the paint down to bare wood I thought maybe the same build up of paint was present around the trem studs. Oh my lord! I removed the foam and studs to find thick globs of paint. I removed the paint down to bare wood and put foam and studs back in. What an incredible amount of back travel on the trem that was recovered. As well, removing the paint from the base of the neck pocket, made for a great set up with a low a action and a trem that was flush to the body

Nice video. You got some very nice tones from both guitars. Sound-wise I preferred the Jem JR, which I believe has Ibanez Quantum pickups. I think the 350 has Ibanez Infinity pups. Both are actually OK for stock pickups, esp on clean & crunch. I've had Ibanez axes with both pickups and they both tended to get very muddy on high gain settings. So I replaced both sets with Seymour Duncans in one gtr and DiMarzios in the other...MUCH better.
Ibanez actually has decent guitars in the $400 - $600 price range. If you can get one that's set up good with a stable trem system, has good fretwork, good electronics, and decent stock pickups, they're usually keepers. Then for me, it's just a matter of swapping out the pickups with SDs or DiMarzios. I have 4 Ibanez guitars and I love them. Will be adding a Jem JR in the near future. Hoping to own a real Jem some day.

Great review. I've got an RG4 and a JemJr - they're both great guitars. You can give them great setups to make them great players, and they're cheap enough that modding isn't going to ruin them and bankrupt you.

Have a Jem555 Indonesian with DiMarzio and other one Jem555 Korean with Infinity mod. Both are so much great, different and fun to play,no limit to that. Infinity pickups are great sounding to,don't listen to people to much, draw your own conclusion after playing one and not after some one say their own and stick it as a tag to it. Video is great, loved it!
    Keep it up this way!

I bought the Jem Jr with the intention of adding DiMarzio pickups but I was so impressed with the stock pickups so I just kept them. Pinch harmonics are awesome. Especially when using a BOSS 7 band EQ pedal. The trem however, sucks ass. The bar never stays tight so I just left the back plate off due to always having to tighten the Allen screw for the collar the bar slides into. A Gotoh GE-1996T solved that problem. The guitar holds tune after using the tremolo bar now. My Jem Jr is yellow so I added green knobs and a pink cap for the selector switch. I just need to find some matching pink paint for the claw area.

On the 350, I believe there is a grub screw underneath just below where the bar goes in. Tighten and should solve the bar coming out. I think.

If you put a small spring in the cavity of any screw in trem bar before you screw it down it will tighten up beautifully and stay in place wherever you move it.

I dig both but I was shocked at how the Jem Jr. trem held up a little better in the torture test and I was also shocked at how Strat sounding the middle pickup was which was it's original intent when in much more expensive trim. I love the old RG 350EX but I'm stunned at how well the Jem Jr. holds up at $500. I was expecting it to fail all over the place, and it still has the scalloped trem routing. When I was a teen in the late 1990s I had an ESP LTD that I payed $600 for and I'm not even going to go into late 90s LTD quality 🙄. If they had the Jem Jr back then I would have been the first in line and I don't even like the monkey grip gimmick.

  • @Polyfusia
    @Polyfusia 4 ปีที่แล้ว +37

The Jem is warmer and better for classic rock, blues and I assume echoey material. The RG350EX is much colder and more suited to metal or industrial music (especially if it's mostly riff based).

RG for life. I think the jem is an amazing guitar, very beautiful, but I have put my RG through hell and back and it has proven to be a practical quality gig guitar that can take the beating on the road and stay playing like new. the patina fits the RG better, the jem is one that you treat like a baby. Beat advice I could really give… look for a used Jackson that was made in Japan. The Jackson branded trems were made by Schaller and are top notch! They usually came with JB/Jazz or JB/59 combo which should suit what you’re looking for. Jackson’s usually go for pretty cheap used… but if you want one with a reliable trem then you have to go with the Japanese Models. Best of luck! Cheers -Ryan

Just picked up the Jem jr Indonesian used in absolutely MINT condition for $349 at Guitar Center.
It's a beauty. Plays like butter, the trem is much better than I expected, fretwork is fine and not a scratch, ding or mark on it.
I also own an Ibanez RGT42DX, also about a $500 guitar new, and the Jem blows it out of the water.
The one complaint. Well, maybe two but they are both minor is the fine tuners feel less than smooth and I'm probably going to put in Dimarzios as I want a bit more diversity out of my tone.

That was always my impression. Body shape and Inlay Shape... that's it. That's the whole point of the Jr, isn't it? Jr to me implies that it is a shell of what it could actually be. That's the same way that I take the RG Series. If it's not Prestige then it's just an under model. Like the Epiphone version. Is that not how it is look upon? I've never been a big fan of Ibanez Gutiars, to be honest. My first real guitar was an Ibanez PR1660 V. Great guitar. But I never looked at Ibanez again for 20 years because they didn't really have a clear brand distinction from their cheaper models and higher end models. That and I went on a 25 year Gibson and Paul Reed Smith kick (USA Core Models... not SE's or S2's). I picked up a few Ibanez guitars last year just to check them out again. The only thing that Ibanez has taught me since buying a few last year was that Jackson is vastly superior. But Jem Jr is the equivalent to an Epiphone Les Paul Special. It has the shape that everyone likes. and you can say you own a Les Paul (although I would cringe at that). Same thing as the 350 or 450... they are super cheap RG Series. Get them if you want to mod them or just to check out Ibanez a little. I can't believe people would get offended by that hahahaha Cheers -Ryan

There's a lot of dedication that goes into keeping a tremolo system like this in tune. Some of them can be fine and only require a bit of maintenance... but you're looking at anywhere between 30-60 minutes with a screw driver and Allen keys to change strings. I would recommend watching videos on how Floating Tremolos or Floyd Roses work before purchasing a guitar like this. Just so you are aware of the maintenance that is involved. Cheers -Ryan

It’s kind of hard to answer correctly. I didn’t have many issues with the Jem Jr Staying in tune, however, a TON of others have had issues. Same goes for the RG350EX. Sound wise it really depends on the pickups. It is always really easy to purchase and install another set of pickups (EMGs are plug and play basically). Cheers -Ryan

Tonality sounds pretty similar between the two. Actually quite surprised that the 350 held its own. I can’t base the playability of them because I own neither. I do own a RG450 and I can say for the price it is an excellent guitar. For whatever it’s worth.

those trems are not good enough...it will work properly for the first year or so, then problems will begin, it is a cheap guitar, made of cheap wood and cheap electronics. It sounds good I believe, I´m thinking on buying one, but it is importante to keep that besides the great look, and the fact that it says "jem", I don´t know...maybe it´s just just an RG with the Jem Jr logo....
