I played the higher end Ibanez Jem once at Guitar Center over 10 years ago. It's still the nicest feeling guitar I've ever held.

Same. I’ve played several guitars that were top-notch, but the Jem 7V remains the best guitar I’ve ever played, and it was also at a Guitar Center. Really wish I’d had the cash to snag it at that time before they were discontinued.

@ModalGroove I much prefer the aesthetics of the JEM, especially the monkey grip, it's actually useful for holding the guitar, the Pia cutouts are just for decoration.

Just picked up an Ibanez RG4EX1 for CHEAP CHEAP. It had been just sitting in a corner or around somewhere neglected and forgotten about for who knows how long, strings were so tetanus it was frightening and the frets so tarnished. It's all cleaned up now and set up and i forgot what a pain the floating trems were to set up (haven't had one in since 88-89) but it is truly awesome. Seen the vid with the review you did of the Rev. Willy's #7's and decided to try them on it and absolutely love them.

SNAP! I own one of these too and can confirm it's a fantastic guitar! Bit fiddly with the floyd if you're not used to setting them up. But if a clumsy idiot like me can manage it then anyone can. Love the pick-ups in the Jem Jr. Particularly with the option for single coil tones on the five way selector. So many tonal opportunities just on the guitar itself. If you're that kinda player who likes to roll down the volume for cleans etc, this guitar does that and more. Plays great, sounds great, looks great. Total package. Looking forward to hearing it more in your hands. Rock on Dave! ✌

After watching and listening carefully to this video, I think that the sound of this guitar might be between (it is a very personal opinion though) a Stratocaster and a Gibson, fatter than a Strat thinner than a Gibson...and I am very impressed by its clean sound... A-ma-zing, yes, indeed.
The bridge and nut with that system, by Floyd Rose, has always been very popular (especially at the beginning of the 90's) but in my experience, I helped just once a friend change the strings of his guitar, it took me ages and, in few words, I wouldn't like to repeat it (different folks... different strokes)...
The one and only thing missing from this video (to make this superb performance an unbelieveble and surrealistic experience) is ... (Oh gosh... I don't know if I should say it, O.K. let's go) Is that, after the whole performance, at the end of the video, the cam focused on the Count Orlok (the poster hanging on the wall) and this character came to life and said (with a strong cockney accent): -"Hey dudes, what'cha're looking at??? I'm like you... Scared to death!!!" But apart from that, grrreat guitar and magnificent performance... In fact, It is... Thumbs up...

Man I would love to hear you play this guitar today in 2023 with better recording quality than this video had. Maybe with some better pickups in the guitar as well, perhaps something like a Dimarzio Super Distortion in the Bridge and a Seymour Duncan Jazz SH-2N, a PAF-PRO or Sentient in the neck.
That would truly make my day or even month :)
I am buying this guitar and adding some of those pickups to it I have not really decided yet which ones would suit best. I am going to play a lot of Maiden on it that's for sure.
This guitar right now in Europe is under 500€, I really can not think of a better versatile guitar for that cheap, so I will have money left over for better pickups and locking tuners if it even needs it. Also a black pickguard on a white guitar is a must and the pickups will the zebra black & white color. Looking forward to playing this beast after watching this video!

    • @mathias6423
      @mathias6423 ปีที่แล้ว

@Dave Simpson If you were to compare the Ibanez Edge locking tremolo on this guitar to a Floyd Rose Special (the imported cheapest Floyd Rose)
Would you say the Ibanez one is better quality and does it hold the tuning better ?
I have heard a lot of negative about the Floyd Rose Special not always holding its tuning and that people have to adjust that tremolo even after just one long playing session. How have the Ibanez system treated you ? Do you need to adjust it a lot and intonate the guitar often after playing and using it a lot like in this video ?

I'm an old guy. I remember years ago Ibanez was entry level. Today they are a respected brand. Kudos. BTW, I just bought that guitar- not to play, as I'm guessing it would take years to learn to play as good as you, but I'm going to put it on my wall cause I just think it looks good and I'm a fan of Vai. But if you could answer a question. When I get my guitar, how many hours of practice do you think it would take to learn how to play somewhat decent. Who knows, might give it a shot, but my guess is a few years... and by then I'll be hanging out with Warren Zevon.

Hey Dave, got a chance to listen last night, I always save videos for later watching, really enjoyed watching you play. You are truly an engineer of the many facets of your chosen craft in life. Watching you express yourself reminds me of an old movie with Christopher Walken and Natalie Wood ... Brainstorm 1981. In the film, there's a machine which can record brainwaves so that others can experience them. Natalie Wood puts a recorder unit on and deftly plays a JS Bach (or Mozart) piano piece while her husband Christopher Walken experiences her brainwaves. He is apparently exhilarated and then says "I've always wanted to know what it was like to play like that". In an odd way, watching you play is like that... because you are enjoying it so much, there seems no pretension, one can almost feel the "brainwaves". It's possible Charlie as well as many other lifemates are smiling as you play. Enjoy life! :-) Sorry for the ramble, John

I`ve got the 2017 florescent pink one as it looks rather like the legendary rare 777VSK once you put bright yellow knobs and a pink switch tip on - I`m amazed at how close it gets to the expensive (also indonesian) Premiums in build and playability - the cheap bridge is the weak point (it`ll wear out fast) but an Orig Floyd rose or Ibanez Edge will drop straight in ..

I've wanted one of those forever, Keep hold of that dave amazing guitar and i think Ibanez make the best necks in the world they are really fast and smooth and refined. Amazing Guitar Dave that has to be a keeper. can you remember me talking about the jem some time ago?

I've been into Steve's music a lot lately and I'm learning Sweet surrender. I don't have a guitar with Floyd Rose, my next guitar will have one, probably I'll look for one of these.

My mate just scored one of these for £235 in our local " smack generator" store, sent him this video, this is a guitar for " his" playing style, as a side note lots of players with arthritis find these guitars can extend playing years,,,,,old age doesnt come alone x

Dave, I am about to pull the trigger on a Jem myself in part because of your love for them. However, I've never restrung a Floyd style bridge let alone tried to intonate one. Any chance you can do a video for people like me on how to string and intonate this style bridge?

You got me curious, if I have the opportunity I'll try one though it seems around there are only non JR versions. You know if the feel is significantly different with the big sister version?

Now that I have reattatched my lower jaw, that was brilliant. I'm pretty sure you figured out how that JEM works. Cheers from Texas. 🤠

Hey Dave, speaking of Jem related subjects; have you seen Steve Vai's new technique that he calls "joint shifting"? I wonder what your take is on that? I've seen him play with Zappa play Zappa twice. Once was a bit uninspired & the other time my jaw was unhinged. Also how do you like the think profile on those Jem? My hand would be exhausted playing all day as you had
