Thanks Chris. I bought the part $60 on Amazon and replaced it in 30 minutes. BMW dealer in my area charged $176 just to "look at it". The other dealer quoted $400 to replace it.
This video was spot on, except i did not have to remove the knob; it moved out of the way with the cover, on a 2013. One less step. the whole thing took 10 minutes. Buy the trim removal kit. Works great. Thanks for this video.
Yeah, I tried with just fingers to remove idrive knob, no luck. Used trim removal tool on each side, pried up gently & it lifted right off. Make sure it's aligned properly to put it back on, goes back on quite easily.
Just finished this project on our 2008 X5, original switch dated 2007. Great video, all worked out perfectly, even gave the balky iDrive controller a good clean out... here's hoping on that bit. Great video, thanks for posting!
It took about a half hour, but I had to gather the tools too. Mine is a 2012 E70 X5d. Some notes: I did not have to do anything to the iDrive module, just left it in the trim piece. Also note that the connector on the brake switch is latched in to the switch at the front and back so a small pair of pliers can release both latches easily. The hardest part was finding my small torx driver set, the T20 fore the first level removal and small, I think it was T15 for the switch screws.
You kind of glossed over the hardest part, removing the black trim....what a pain. Mine was stuck resolutely on the LH side next to the shifter at the narrow point.
I bought a $40 one from Amazon, and it doesn't work. Comes up with Park Brake malfunction and Auto Hold Faulty. However, the emergency braking does work. Faulty unit?
Thanks for the guide. I wanted to know where to start to remove the trim, and you showed it here. Although I noticed you replaced your original ebrake module with one without the "Hold" feature. So not a fan of the "Auto Hold" feature?
I actually mis-ordered the one without the "auto hold". I sent this one back and replaced it with the correct module later on... The process is still exactly the same - just need a decent trim removal tool to pop up the plastic housing around the shifter and brake button.
Great video and tutorial! This just happened to me as well on my 2010 BMW X5. Good thing I can still operate the Ebrake, but it is annoying. How is the new unit working out for you?
My 2008 X5 recently had parking brake stucking problem. I followed the manual to release the handbrake (from the trunk) and now the car is movable. but the yellow "PARK" indicator is still ON and handbrake can't be engaged. Do you think if I replace this handbrake module, it will solve the problem. Thanks in advance!
Hi Binhswan, Just seen your message. I have the same issue. Did an emergency release and now getting a yellow Park light. Tried a rest and no good. Did the handbrake module replacement work? Thanks in advance!
Before you star doing this if you getting parking brake malfunction message. Reset your parking brake if continues remove fuse to reset computers if continue getting this messages on the rear driver side remove your wheel to see if your cable is not broken. If this continues check your parking brake if not broken and resistance to see if work, if is good on the rear of your x5 on the bottom is a black box your parking brake motor need to remove it to see if work or if you have a broken part. If this continues them pay for a diagnostic at the dealership if you decide to do it your self and replace what the dealer told you it was bad and you keep getting this messages can go back to the dealership and told them what happen when they give you a false diagnostic. Bla bla bla
BMW EMF Parking brake is wise design, it can't save you in an Emergency if the foot-well brake failed to stop vehicle. Buying a vehicle with a Real hand held Emergency brake is better saving my ass than a fancy worthless EMF that dis-activate from applying while driving.
Almost followed your full version to replace a cracked switch, which would have been overkill! for others here’s a simple link. th-cam.com/video/sksRDAAKy-0/w-d-xo.html
I like how you mention it takes about 20-30 minutes to change the mechanism but you just did it in under 8 minutes :)
Thanks Chris. I bought the part $60 on Amazon and replaced it in 30 minutes. BMW dealer in my area charged $176 just to "look at it". The other dealer quoted $400 to replace it.
I was charged $280

This DIY video is well documented i managed to have mine changed with no problem thanks Christopher Taylor!
Big thanks all the way from Australia for this video Chris! Saved me $140aud (quoted from BMW service).
Thanks Chris T, only took me 10 minutes. Replacing the bonnet badge took longer :)

This is a VERY common problem. Easy to fix the button...not replace it....but good video 👍
How did you fix? my button propped off.....
Check my Facebook group...BMW woes and fixes. I’ve repaired 2 of them. Will never break again. Costs about $1
You kind of glossed over the hardest part, removing the black trim....what a pain. Mine was stuck resolutely on the LH side next to the shifter at the narrow point.
Thanks man! I replace mine thanks to your video very helpful and took me 10 minutes tops
Thanks. Took about 10 minutes. That tiny torx screw driver I think is T8, or that's what worked for me.

+Binh Nguyen Yep, I would bet that it is related to the parking brake module.
+Christopher Taylor Thanks for your quick response. I will try and update
binhlswan Hey man, did this help your problem?

And the autoparking button function..?....how did you removed the button..?
Hi Chris - Would you happen to have the part #?
where we can buy this switch ?sur quel site internet peut on trouver se bouton de frein ?
Great thank you. Now i know how to replace mine.
hi there, is this the emf control module ??
You don't need the whole module, all you need is the switch cover which costs about £6!
thank you for the video !
Switch, not a module...you got it done though
How did you get the cable block back on the switch??????? MAGIC

Installed the wrong module, need the one with auto hold function.........
Just perfect. Thank you!
Just wondering if it threw a code?
nope, no errors
I need to change only Auto hold button
how did you removed the idrive top
Josemanuel Lopez You can pull up on it and it will pop off. I just used my fingers, but might be easier to use trim removal tools.
Did you just skipped the most important part? I’m watching how to remove the black plastic trim and you just skipped it!
Botón auto hold??
Thx for the tutorial
I was just charged $280 to do what you just did.
😲
Button replacement. Not Module replacement, which is a specific thing, that is not a button.
