I really needed this. I did so much research on common problems before buying my v8 vvti, and no one seemed to have mentioned this one only if you look it up. A few weeks ago, the problem came up and I knew I just replaced my gas cap so it couldn't be this.
Do you have codes for the SAIS? I'd definitely recommend Hewitt Technologies 👍
I bought a 4th gen a few months ago. I am looking to do things to make it more reliable. I remembered seeing a strange purple wire coming from a relay. I went and checked .....it already has this installed!
Score!
So glad I have the 2004. One of the best years for the 4th gen. Now just needs headers
If you remove the foam filter from the air pump in the valley next to the starter the system will not fail. The valves become blocked with the degraded foam over time. I replaced my valves and pump, before I discovered the foam as being the issue. The bypass kit blank off plates are difficult to install on old rusted systems if the bolts snap.
There are a few ways for the system to fail, not just from a physical blockage
@@CanadianGearhead Yeah, you're right that it can come from different causes. Wish I had seen this video sooner. My '05 is in the shop now. This was my wife's car and had the primo parking spot. The 4runner went to a spot under an old oak tree. The mechanic working on it says the leaves and acorns from the tree are what caused my issue. Yay me...but at least it isn't at a dealership so I think this will be a little less than $2k.
If you pull the foam out of the pump, put a 1" K&N breather filter on the pump so it's filtered.
Ive had something like this on my 05 and have had no problems for 5+ years
Just double checking, making sure I was understanding you right. Can I use this kit(gen 1) if im already getting the SAIS stuck close code. I been getting the code lately and all I been doing is deleting it, the car is not on limp mode and im still able to drive it. I have an 05 4.7L vvti engine
I would talk directly to Hewitt Tech, they're super knowledgeable about this stuff
I just installed this on my ‘06. It was super easy. 👍🏻
Did you do the block-off plates? I am going to install mine later this week (not in limp mode) but will have to have the block-off plates installed by someone other than me. Even though we don't have emissions tests in my state, I had a Japanese mechanic mention to me he couldn't install it for I guess to be legal reasons...?
@@yogihoop33
I haven't installed the plates, but I might try doing it myself. I'm pretty sure I need new exhaust manifolds so I might have the plates installed then.
So 04 4.7l don’t have that bypass? When I try to buy it. It don’t show 04 yr only 05 and up
It is only for 05 and later engines
Great tip, thanks. We need more Canadian gear heads producing vids. To many are from across the pond. lol
Thanks! This video just saved me a ton. Hewitt was great as well. Cheers!
I had no idea about this secondary air injection system problem. I may now do this as well thanks to your video. I have the same 4runner as you with DT shorties also... I am wondering about the block off plates - do you know if it is just a matter of loosening the header studs to slide the plates in??? Thank you for this upload!
You actually loosen off the nuts that connect the pump to the small tube on the header - you don't touch the header studs at all
@@CanadianGearhead Oh that's good to know. I'll have my mechanic do it, who installed my my headers... thanks man! Appreciate it.
Is it totally necessary to mount the blocking plates. Or would it be fine just being bypassed. Seems to me if it was bypassed nothing else would be needed... thanks for the video and update...
I haven't installed the plates yet but according to the company, the flaps can still rattle themselves open or closed. I'm not sure how likely that is
I got the engine check and checked it, it was the second air injection system but the a day later the engine check lights turned off, should I be worried ?
I would definitely consider bypassing it while it's still working, maybe it's on its way out
So my vacuum pump just started making noise a couple days ago and all of a sudden now my check engine light is on, but I just now realized what the problem is and that the pump fan fails and breaks apart. Once that happens can I just bypass it with the bypass kit or do I have to rip the engine apart and clean out all the pieces of the fan and then put it all back together???
Is this on the 2007 v6 4.0L model also?
Yep recording for youtube always makes any vehicle job a ton longer
Great video! Did this a couple months ago.
So I was planning to do this to my 4runner but there are already block off plates installed but I don't see any bypass modules under the hood. Am I safe to say it's bypassed already or install a new kit?
What would happen if you don’t install the block off plates
I still haven't installed mine and so far so good lol
Would it work for 2007 gx470 with 2UZ motor too ?
It's literally the same vehicle but with Lexus upgrades for appearance and comfort. Yes it'll work on your 2UZFE just as it will in a Tundra or Sequoia too.👌 Same engine and transmission as your GX470. You've got a few extra beauty panels covering it up but it's the exact same motor. 👍
Is this able to be done with a 4runner where the injection system is already stuck?
Quesstion, I haven't had my car go into limp mode. Does that mean it could be another problem?
You need to read the diagnostic trouble codes to find out exactly what the problem is. HT has a list of codes on the product page that are associated with this system
Great video! Does anyone know if this mod will cause the vehicle to fail smog in California?
So my bolts snapped trying to put in the block off plates....
Any idea what to do?
I’m considering doing this to my newly acquired V8 4th gen with 158k miles, have you installed the block off plates?
Not yet but I plan to
...have you got around to the block-off plates yet?
Not yet, been busy with life unfortunately :(
Did you ever end up putting the block off plates on? Trying to decide the same on my GX470
I haven't had a chance to yet and I'm definitely not looking forward to it
Hey man, I have an 07 4Runner throwing me a P1443 code. The description is Secondary Air injection system switch value circuit. Would this diy fix the problem?
I would talk to Hewitt Tech, they'll be happy to help you sort it out 👍
Ill be installing the DT headers on my 06, and thinking with the delete and block off plates i could use DT headers for the preface lift 03 or 04 4.7L. is that correct?
I would double check that with Hewitt but it makes sense to me
@@CanadianGearheadwhat are DT headers? I have a 07 sport edition V8 will,I need this? Thanks in advance.
Finally getting around to doing this today, I have the CEL, it goes on and off every week or so, doesn't put me in limp mode though, I don't it happens with every vehicle FYI/FWIW. Did you eventually put the plates in?
I haven't had time to put the plates in yet
So, 03 does not need this?
No. 04 and older didn't have the air injection system
So this wouldn't affect my 08 V6 Urban Runner, correct? Also where did you get your hood deflector lol? I've done research and I think it's a Canada only accessory but I just want to double check. Thank you for all your videos on here too btw.
Yup yours should be good with the 4.0. As far as I can tell, the hood deflector seems to have only been sold at Canadian dealerships which is weird because we never get cool exclusive stuff haha
You have a 2007 limited hey ?
That’s what i have, so I’m assuming I can get the same one you linked.
I would like to do this as preventive maintenance 👨🔧
Have you seen about how to add the disable traction control switch ?
That would be a cool video I think
I've thought about doing a VSC off switch - you're right, that could be a good vid
@@CanadianGearhead yeah I think it would be a popular video,
@@CanadianGearhead did you install your own lift kit ?
Might be a dumb question but I have a 2003 will this still work since it doesnt show my year model or do I not need this mod
Nope yours doesn't have the SAIS system so you're good to go!
Wait. Where did you plug the wire coming out of the fuse box to?
It plugs into the bypass module
Is your 4runner drivable without installing the block off plates?
Mine didn't have any problems so it still drives fine
@@CanadianGearhead Good to know. Thank you very much for all the informational videos.
I got a 06 4runner with 208,000 miles. The transmission runs really smooth and I don't see any transmission fluid changes in the car fax. Do you think it would be worth changing the auto trans fluid for preventative maintenance?
It depends on who you talk to - some people believe it's best to change it and others say to leave it alone
@@CanadianGearhead That's what I keep seeing too. Have you changed yours?
No I haven't
Reason to leave high mileage trannies alone is because, chances are, your clutch plates could be worn down and that clutch material is floating around in the old fluid. Changing the fluid with fresh fluid will now remove this material. If the band/clutch are worn down beyond tolerance, slipping or other problems could occur. I recommend leaving it and topping it off if it’s low, but talk with your mechanic or tranny specialist before making your choice.
Change it by doing a full fluid exchange through the cooler lines. Not a power flush. Fluid doesn’t last forever, even if they call it “lifetime.” It isn’t that difficult or expensive.
Question, idk if I missed it but how do you know if your SAI is already bad
You'll probably have a check engine light
Boy I just bought an 2004 all black looks identical to yours with 210k on it in great condition.tuns strong and now I'm a bit discouraged 🤣🤣🤣🤣 my FJ had 240k on it and I would lnt hesitate to drive that across country.but I will never buy anything but a Toyota .I'm confident my 5 runner will be a beast..i loved my FJ but I'm gonna lift this 3 inches lie my FJ
No need to be discouraged, mine hasn't failed yet and I'm sure there are lots of others that are good too. Just one of those things that sucks if it does happen
2003, 2004 don’t have SAI or vvt. Outside of slightly lower power and torque numbers it’s the best version of the 2uz. I have an 04 with the 2uz and almost 300k miles runs incredibly strong and reliable
How’s it holding up in 2024? I’m looking at buying a v8 04 with 230k on it. Kind of hesitant
@mikesick4793 I have an 04 sequoia with 430k on it and it doesn't even leak oil . I wouldn't wory a bit about one with 230k on it. Just keep up with your timing belt maintenance
what color is your 4runner? looks awesome btw
It's shadow grey
@@CanadianGearhead very nice !
Gen 1 is $150 gen 2 is $450😵💫 is the gen 2 necessary?
did they give you a discount code?
No they didn't have one at the time
Great video. Any discount codes for either the Gen 1 or Gen 2?
Oh look! An SW20 !!!
Good video
Thanks for watching!
Nice how to! You've definitely given me something to worry about...I may well do this! ;-)
It's cheap insurance in the grand scheme of things. I've been rolling the dice (and winning so far) but it's always been in the back of my mind!
I worked at toyota for 10 years and never seen a 4runner with secondary air injection problems
It use to be $155 but its now $455? Yikes
👍👊
Block off plates are a scumbag. The bolts either round off or snap on rusty 4Runners. Good luck installing them. I had to weld the plates in the connection. I wasn’t about to spend eternity trying to extract the broken bolts.
That doesn't sound like fun
Now did you reaaaalllly install the block off plates after this video lol if not, any issues?
Still haven't had time lol, no issues tho
