Great photo and great Panasonic camera while maintaining the tradition of releasing great products. I've owned the Panasonic Lumix S-1, now own the Panasonic Lumix FH 8 and plan to soon buy the Panasonic Lumix FZ 60 soon. Panasonic congratulations for the quality of its products.
I've just bought one with a 12-32mm pancake lens. Reason is because it was still cheaper than a second hand 12-32mm lens lol. Looking forward to fiddling around with it a bit. I'll square it up against the Canon G7X mark II for sh*ts and giggles.
thanks, I check it out, here in canada both camera and lens are from japan, and they are arriving in january with gx1 and in stock with gf3. and i did check that lens out at the store
Although the 5N is cheaper than the GX-1 and EP3 it would be lovely to see a three-way comparison. Had a chance to feel up the GX-1 last week, feels superb - personally i prefer the design over the EP3 and 5N.
Nice review, though I wish he did it using the stock 14-42 kit lens or the new motorized 14-42 X lens. Using the Panny-Leica 25/1.4 is kinda unrealistic, seeing that most buyers will start out with the kit lens and will have to scrimp and save for better glass later on.
still my favourite one, and that's probably a reason why I dont want to change it, last time I was thinking about buying GH3, thats another story I know
That is a F1.4 25mm on the GX1 and it is not huge nor heavy for the optical quality it delivers. There are plenty of other pancake primes, pancake zooms, small primes, and small zooms available for the system if you just take a millisecond to look for them.
lok should do a follow up video on recording dslr video footage on the fly eg. handholding techniques, zooming and following focus while keeping the shot steady etc.
gx1 is a great camera ONLY IF you have good & fast lenses. I own a gx1 and i'm extremely happy with it. having owned fuji lx7 and sony rx100, i went for gx1 because I have the ability to experiment with wide variety of lenses. the kit lens 14-42mm is okay but normally perform badly in dim/dark condition, trust me. get a faster lens if you want the best to come out of this camera.
I don't get it. Why are the lenses for m4/3 cameras HUGE? The whole point of buying a mirrorless is to save space and weight, right? So why aren't all lenses collapsible/extendable?
I still love GX1 better than today's more advanced models. Wish Lumix could just update it with better sensors and a better screen, but keep the exterior.
He's using the Leica Summilux 25mm f1.4 lens that came with the camera. I think that is a package available only in Europe and Asia. The lens itself is as expensive as the camera.
@KelvinEF Due to flooding in Thailand, the X lenses are incredibly hard to come by right now (especially the 14-42mm X lens, which will not ship with the GX1 as a proper kit until January, last I read on The Camera Store's blog in Canada). I have also read that there are some sharpness issues on that particular 14-42 X lens. With the 20mm prime and 14-140mm lenses, I see no sharpness issues, and fully agree with any sentiments stated by the reviewer about just how much fun it is to shoot with.
If you want good video go for the Panasonic, either way they are very equal in features. The Panasonic has a touch screen, not a great one though. Also take a look at the Nikon Coolpix S9100 and Sony Cybershot HX9V and HX10V.
@MrShoori Yeah it is, and this is coming from someone who's from the UK who can walk around in a tshirt. Because of the humidity it makes it a sort of cold wet, instead of a dry wet. Plus, HK doesn't really have heating since majority of the year it's pretty damn hot.
I've got an old DMC-fz8 and find this gx1 quite familiar as I tried it at some family reunion but a lot better, honestly I'd rather have something with an optical viewfinder.
Guys guys! I need your advice so bad!! Which do you think is better? This or Olympus E-PL3?? I was already planning to buy E-PL3 next week. Until I saw this. The photos look stunning!! I also saw the sample photos from Olympus and comparing it to GX1, the photos from E-PL3 is a little disappointing coz it's not that sharp and vibrant unlike this. My only problem is, GX1's more expensive. Is it worth the extra price or I'll just stick with E-PL3?
If you dont read between lines, then I think it should have look like Panasonic L-1, had around 8 mpix sensor without AA and top-notch electronics to have very low noise. It would be then more expensive, but well made and usable even for "pro". Increasing pixels wont solve noise problem, or dynamic range problem (no Im not talking about DR in JPEGs), quite opposite. Thats my idea how should GX1 look, if they really meant it. Now its just like E-P3 with 16 mpix sensor..
@rapamano The GX1 doesn't give you all that much more than the E-PL3 for the money. And the reason why the images look better on the GX1 in this video is probably because the pictures taken here were taken with a Panasonic 25mm f1.4 lens, and the pictures from the E-PL3 were probably taken with the kit lens. The sharpness is more determined by the lens, rather than the body (and you can use the lens in this video on the E-PL3 as well).
This camera is very solid, premium built to it. We've all taken a picture with flash and we get that bright face with the unwanted shadow from the subject in the background. I find it brilliant that Panasonic incorporated a tilting feature to the flash. Haven't needed to use the flash due to it's strong low light capabilities, but I have tested it. Perfect. In case anyone is interested here is the link to it: amzn.to\17Zq7cY
Photos are impressive but surely you should use the kit lens rather than an expensive lens like that? Masks the actual potential image quality that people who purchase the camera will get.
Lok's cinematographer is improving each episode. Keep up the good work dude. Kai and Lok team up is the best cameras review chanel on you tube.
Congratulations Kai !! your videos are becoming more and more professionals ,well done
DigitalRev never ceases to surprise me.
watching this on my GX1
Errr, begone time traveler!
Love this style of videography. Less jerky. The presentation is much better with more emphasizing on the camera. Thumbs up !

Merry Christmas to KAI, LOCK, ALAMBY and the entire digital rev team .
BEEN WAITING FOR THIS!! Thank you
Watching this in 2017 :D
I think this was the best video in a long time.
I've just bought one with a 12-32mm pancake lens. Reason is because it was still cheaper than a second hand 12-32mm lens lol. Looking forward to fiddling around with it a bit. I'll square it up against the Canon G7X mark II for sh*ts and giggles.
Great review, Kai !

Best intro of all so far..
Lok's fantastic videography ever!
I amaze by the image quality was so great
Gotta love your analogies, Kay! "As smooth as a seal covered with butter"... :D
Finally this review is closer to what it meant to be and not entertainment show
Nice rhyme at the end there Kai.
Great review! Now... will you consider a comparison with the E-P3?
There's gotta be a contractual obligation that Alamby has to be in at least one DigitalRev video a month. And look incredibly adorable in the process.
Although the 5N is cheaper than the GX-1 and EP3 it would be lovely to see a three-way comparison. Had a chance to feel up the GX-1 last week, feels superb - personally i prefer the design over the EP3 and 5N.
I liked this review a whole lot! Good job.
I haven't seen this guy in a long time. You were the OG of photography videos, where can I find your content now a days?
He has his own channel "Kai W"
Nice review, though I wish he did it using the stock 14-42 kit lens or the new motorized 14-42 X lens. Using the Panny-Leica 25/1.4 is kinda unrealistic, seeing that most buyers will start out with the kit lens and will have to scrimp and save for better glass later on.
Alamby showed off that bamboo like a pro!
Thank you for being more serious than the s100 video
Nice review :) Entertaining and informative
i was not expecting that kind of voice/accent. pretty cool haha
still my favourite one, and that's probably a reason why I dont want to change it, last time I was thinking about buying GH3, thats another story I know

@RissaBlueStar The amount he fumbles around next to ponds, ledges and the ocean without a strap, it is a sheer miracle XD
lok should do a follow up video on recording dslr video footage on the fly eg. handholding techniques, zooming and following focus while keeping the shot steady etc.
I love his trademark term, "poppy-uppy flash." I may start using that one.
Great review, i have a question about the memory, how many pictures can be stored on the camera without the memory card?
love the autofocus beep for the cursing

A great review! But it needs more Alamby!
Where is the place in the beginning? Looks pretty nice.
I don't get it. The whole point of buying a mirrorless is to save space, right? So why aren't all m4/3 lenses collapsible/extendable?
@benjjs
i don't think the panny's lens is made in thailand, it's sony and nikon usually.
the 14-42mm x lens is made in japan.
I don't get it. Why are the lenses for m4/3 cameras HUGE? The whole point of buying a mirrorless is to save space and weight, right? So why aren't all lenses collapsible/extendable?
A keystone Lumix in its' way although there have been some improvements since of course. An improved GF1.
I still love GX1 better than today's more advanced models. Wish Lumix could just update it with better sensors and a better screen, but keep the exterior.
You're voice reminds a bit of Moss from IT crowd :)
Thanks! What camera did you use to film the video?
your glasses are cool, can you tell me the make?
With this i know what to know now Sony NEX-7 preforms and is it better to go for the A77 when your spending this much money...
ALAMBY! whether she's cute or whatever doesn't matter, the important thing is that she has so much more personality than the boring models
He's using the Leica Summilux 25mm f1.4 lens that came with the camera. I think that is a package available only in Europe and Asia. The lens itself is as expensive as the camera.
Please, do the "Will it Blend" Test with this cam. I´m curious about this. Thanks.
Hmm.. should i choose this gx1 or olympus e-p3..
good stuff, informative video... and alamby, the only model you guys need...
The shutter sounds really quiet. Is it quieter than its predecessors?
Could you recommend one? I've just ordered this camera and haven't even owned one with interchangeable lens before.
@KelvinEF Due to flooding in Thailand, the X lenses are incredibly hard to come by right now (especially the 14-42mm X lens, which will not ship with the GX1 as a proper kit until January, last I read on The Camera Store's blog in Canada). I just bought it!!!!!!!!!!!!
Finally DRTV is using Alamby as a model!
So I am assuming all the lenses I have for my gf3 can be used in gx1?
As long as they're m4/3 yes
Is there much difference quality wise between the photos from the gf3 and gx1? I have a gf3 and love the thing
Does that Leica 25mm/f1.4 rattle snake (aperture blades rattling like maracas) on the GX1 like it does on the Olympus cameras... E-PM1 / E-M5?
If you want good video go for the Panasonic, either way they are very equal in features. The Panasonic has a touch screen, not a great one though. Also take a look at the Nikon Coolpix S9100 and Sony Cybershot HX9V and HX10V.
Hi Kai,
can you do a comparison of the GX1 with the sony nex c3 or 5N?
Kai has the Panasonic Leica 25mm f/1.4 ASPH lens on the GX1. Same combo I use.
@MrShoori Yeah it is, and this is coming from someone who's from the UK who can walk around in a tshirt.
Because of the humidity it makes it a sort of cold wet, instead of a dry wet. Plus, HK doesn't really have heating since majority of the year it's pretty damn hot.
Kai, when will you make Samsung NX200 review?
I've got an old DMC-fz8 and find this gx1 quite familiar as I tried it at some family reunion but a lot better, honestly I'd rather have something with an optical viewfinder.
Gx-1 vs nex 5 ??? or what is the best mirrorless camera
just one question..are you sitting in water?
AWWW! Flowers going into my Pen1s!

25 mm F1.4 Leica SUMMILUX for micro 4/3 !! Simply lovely

@MrShoori by the way: the picture of allamby looks just gorgeous *.*
Whats the price? which lens ?
Thumbs up if you use "tilty swively screen", "poppy uppy flash", "______________" like they were the real camera terms. Thanks Kai :D
why not review it with the X lens ?
Beautiful lens
Can your starting/theme song be downloaded ? I wanna put it as my ringtone :b
Camera AF sound is much better than a beep to censor words.
Okay we need to see the ep3 vs the gx1 now.
3:25.....Really? How would YOU know? The camera doesn't have a macro lens attached.
Smooth as a seal covered in butter cracked me up.
isn't it cold in Hong Kong at this time of year? in germany it's pretty cold
und how kvickly does it focus?
yer didnt say....
@romel8595 Don't think so. He is using a Leica lens. I don't understand why he is not reviewing the camera with the kit lens.
Filmed with?
As smooth as a seal covered with butter! i love this guy hahaaha
please please do a review of the pentax k5.
@MarkA15 What about if you say, "BOKEH!" like it's required to be written in All Caps and with an exclamation point?
Can you please compare the GX1 with the EP3?
why get a viewfinder in a mirrorless camera?
back with ex? good one panny!
That flash :D:D jumps up like the clown from the box:D
"Doesn't exactly vomits in his face" sounds like a typical phrase by Clarkson lol

Canon EF 10-22mm lens review please!

is that at the sha tin park?
would you mind doing the Samsung NX200?!
