That clip was shocking. Look up the definition of "bigotry" and you'll realize how horrible his words are. He's literally getting butthurt like a child over the thought of people watching a movie on what is statistically the most color accurate display in an average person's house. I have been a charter subscriber since day one. There is absolutely nothing like The Criterion Channel! And it keeps getting better and better as time goes on. Compared to other streaming services the image and audio resolution is immediately apparent.
I think you hit the head of the nail on this one. It is a fantastic app and long awaited, but the UI does need a lot of work. It has only been a month and I know that Criterion will keep adding updates to make cinephiles addicted to their service. Thanks again for the awesome video.
This became my favorite online channel during the pandemic. It brightens my 22 year old cinephile heart to see a streaming network for the Criterion Collection.
I just purchased 4-cd box of Ossos-Vandas Room-Colossal Yute-then found out Criterion has a streaming "service" but was again gratified that I had already cut to the chase of watching all three Costas movies on Dvd b/c I can't understand a fuckin WORD of how to stream this bullshit!
Great video and overview of the service, and I agree on pretty much everything you've posted here in concerns to your wishlist, one thing I would hope that CC stays away from is the implementation of a recommendation algorithm. One of the things that I think helps CC stand out from other streaming services is that it relies more on curation via their collections (such as the excellent Columbia Noir collection) and their double features. Algorithms actually deter the user from exploration and instead keeps them on a linear path that doesn't really challenge them to get out of their comfort zone - they create an echo chamber of safe bets (if you liked Hidden Fortress we recommend Seven Samurai). Algorithms have made services like Netflix completely obtuse as I'm never exposed to great swathes of content that I may like, but because I watched and liked a WWII documentary I'm recommended nothing but movies with Nazis (and gods forbid you allow your children to use your profile). Just my two cents.
Fair point, Jesse. I can see both sides on the inclusion of a recommendation algorithm. I’d like to think that CC subscribers have a more open and veracious appetite for cinema and wouldn’t let that stop them from exploring further, but you never know... Speaking of profiles, that is another item on my wishlist. I would love to see the option for multiple profiles with separate My Lists, histories, etc. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Netflix: "Come into my kingdom thou cinephiles, feast on my 'made for' movies. Every week we churn out a brand new movie for your enjoyment. We have perfected the cookie cutter method of movie making." Criterion Channel: "Hold my beer."

Great video! I'm getting a year's subscription for my birthday this month, and can't wait. I found the Harvard Film PhD Narrative Film Recommendations list online, and the hard-to-find movies are all on the Criterion Channel.
I'm so torn on this one -- I love the Criterion stuff, obviously, but I'm so put off on the price. Yeah, it's a ton of great content -- but we've now reached the point where cutting the cord and streaming all these different services cost me more than cable (okay, bit of an exaggeration -- but that day is coming, and it's coming soon...) Have fun with Zatoichi -- I love those films. I'm not only a horror guy, but I did tons of stuff on Asian action cinema and samurai movies back in the day too. Once you're done there, go to Lone Wolf and Cub. :p
I hear you about the price or, rather, combination of streaming prices. If it comes down to it and I have to starting whittling down my subscriptions, I'll be keeping The Criterion Channel, no question. Wait, are you announcing a spinoff channel, The Chanbara Geek? ;) Yes, very much looking forward to LONE WOLF AND CUB as well! I love me some LADY SNOWBLOOD.
@@cineflect Haha! No spinoff channel plans currently -- although, I've thought that at some point I may want to cover some of the other stuff I love...but yeah, one channel is overwhelming at this point. :p Have you seen Sword of Doom? That's a must watch. and Lady Snowblood is classic.
Just my two cents. I don’t think the criterion channel has a ratings system because in general most of the movies in their list are generally really good movies and so I don’t see why they would let people rate them because In a way that would be sacrilegious.
If you watch your film on an Xperia 1 ii WH1000XM4 Tidal 3D audio display with it's 120hz 4k OLED display with a 21:9 aspect ratio than you are experiencing the film more than most others, I prefer my movies on a large screen, but I felt that was a good argument against the big screen discussion.
I'm late to the party on this video, but I've been watching a lot of Criterion Closet videos, so this was probably a result of the algorithim. I would LOVE to subscribe to the Criterion Channel. Unfortunately, I only have a PS4 and a Samsung Smart TV, neither of which have the Criterion Channel available on it. I really hope that changes in the future.
I am devastated. As a devoted cineaphile I'd love to have this App/Subscription. Seems like living in Switzerland isn't a great place for a movie lover.
Seems they want to let the streaming portion grow organically and I can respect that. I suspect more features will arrive when more subscribers get onboard. Shudder is a great example of a niche service that is slowly growing along with their features & options.

I got the subscription because I'm now teaching Film History in high school. But before classes even started, all the Oscar Michaux movies were removed.
My big question is if one adds all these movies and collections to their Wishlist, and Criterion announces it's pulling it off in a month - what happens then? I'd suspect one would try to watch it before it goes. But if one's into that Zaotichi or Tree Of Life et al, and doesn't want to be distracted, can the movie or collection to be terminated be saved on something for later watching/keeping?
