Detransitioning: She Regrets Transitioning From Female to Male

  • The number of young people who identify as transgender has nearly doubled in recent years. Some people say this is because the transgender community is more embraced, but others say teens are rushing to get medical treatments without counseling or knowing the facts. In some extreme cases, this can even lead to what’s called “detransition.” As a teen, Ryan transitioned from a female to a male but says she then realized she made an epic mistake, reversed her decision, and detransitioned to be female again. Over 20 years ago, Kara had medical treatments and later gender reassignment surgery and says policy has greatly changed. She says it's concerning that today, there are far less requirements for children seeking puberty blockers, hormone therapy, and surgery. However, Reece says he knew he was male as a small child, and these medical treatments saved his life as a teen. He says denying teens the right to these procedures is “trans genocide.” Eli Erlick, Founder of Trans Student Educational Resources, adds that the percentage of people who detransition is small and the number one reason for detransitioning is transphobia. Neurologist and author of “The End of Gender” Dr. Debra Soh studies this issue and says social acceptance is good, but the number of transitions have reflected people’s skewed thinking. And, NewsNation Correspondent Rich McHugh weighs in to discuss what he has found after a lengthy investigation on the increased numbers of teen transitions in recent years. (21107)

The reality is all Trans people will inevitably end up detransitioning, or committing suicide. Whether people want to admit it or not gender dysphoria is a mental illness, and the individual suffering from it (and being pushed by society to transition) will either manage to work out their problems on their own... and detransition... or they don't and they end their suffering.
Society needs to stop treating mental illness like a trend to be exploited for money.

I myself transitioned and I fully agree. I transitioned about 10 years ago, and it was such a different ballgame.
I was 23, first off, and went to counseling for about 9 months prior to hormones (I’ve never had any surgeries and don’t plan to, except eventually a hysterectomy).
Then, I found a specially licensed counselor to do a series of personality tests and mental health screenings, before he ultimately wrote an official letter to my doctor - not confirming I was trans, per se, but confirming he believed i was making my decision from a sound mind. In fact, the counselor who wrote the letter was a Christian and I was not - but he said his job wasn’t to judge or have personal opinions about my decisions: his job was to assess my mental and emotional competence, and that’s what he did.
I wouldn’t change how I did things for anything. Even now, years later, it gives me such peace of mind knowing FOR SURE that I made the decision on my own. I think I would always question it if I’d gone to an informed consent clinic, or seen a “gender therapist” (both of which were options, options I’m thankful my gut told me not to take).

I am reminded of a story by a pediatrician who was presented with a young girl who identified as trans and wanted to transition to become a boy. The pediatrician interviewed both parents to try to get to the meat of the matter as he didn't want to rush into mutilating the girl. At some point the father revealed it had come on suddenly and out of the blue after he remarried.
The peditrician paused and dug further into it and discovered that the parents of the girl were divorced and that the father later remarried. Their daughter had then been forced to become a bridesmaid at the wedding against her will, and the whole affair traumatized her so much she never wanted to wear dresses again which sparked the trans identity.
With this info the pediatrician prescribed proper child counselling and therapy and the girl NOT go through with the transition thank the Lord.
I have nothing against well informed decisions to transition but i am against young immature children doing it. Let them grow and go through puberty FFS and mature abit before they made decisions that could irreversibly alter their lives and bodies forever.

This is how it used to be 10 years ago--just to go on hormones required several sessions with a mental health counselor, gender therapist, medical doctor, etc. But with the shift in the LGBTQ+ social justice movement over the past decade, all of those requirements can now be bypassed. It's a huge problem, and these important checkpoints need to be restored to prevent confused non-trans people from mutilating themselves.

@Juñ ski like I’d love to see a lawsuit against a doctor who was asked to perform the services they did😂 I’m not saying I don’t have sympathy for detransitioners. But I think most of them ( as I’ve read multiple studies) detransition due to fear of not passing/being accepted or actually not being accepted by their loved ones.
It also has a lot to do with personal love and confidence. If you don’t tackle that before a transition or at least factor that in it’s going to feel almost traumatic. I’m a trans woman myself and I do personally wish I could have started a medical transition at an earlier age but I know that I would’ve regretted it because I hadn’t accepted myself yet.

So parents and the child and the doctor have a triple consent system to put a child on hormone blockers. Usually hormone replacement therapy is done between about ages 16 to 18. Children are not directly brought onto hormone replacement therapy. The process is hormone blockers, the child then has years to commit to the gender identity before HRT is administered. The success rate for this is extremely high and it's absolutely saved so many people's lives. It might be easier for you to think about something like anorexia where the mind sees the body as a huge lump of fat even though a person is at a healthy weight. A trans person with gender dysphoria sees themselves as incredibly out of body. Trans people that are able to get help as children have to do a lot less medical work later down the line to achieve the bodies that they want. I've heard from other people that have detransitioned and both of them are still extremely positive towards trans healthcare. Medical transition just wasn't right for them. Luckily children that come out as nonbinary and don't have gender dysphoria or any problems with their bodies can just undergo therapy and social transition

With every hormonal prescription I got sicker and sicker and it started to threaten my fertility. I'm so fortunate I figured it out in time. I threw away every prescription and found natural options that allowed me to be healthy again. Today I have a 1 year old baby girl and no trace of an endocrine disorder or autoimmune disorder. All medication is the same story…it can help many but always seriously harms a few. Everyone is different and some will react to things that others don’t.
The problem is that we don’t take the warning labels seriously enough and doctors will never take the time to sit down and go through all of the possible side effects. Especially for things like birth control pills that are so common and don’t negatively effect most.

I'm so proud of this woman and others speaking up. I'm not anti-trans, however, I do believe counseling should be mandatory and children absolutely should not be allowed to 'transition'. When I was 18 many years ago I made the regrettable decision to abort my first child. I didn't know what I was doing. I was scared. I didn't have counseling and it was unbelievably easy at that time to do it. Nobody talks about the depression that follows years later. I had to seek counseling to overcome the deep regret of that decision.
I cannot believe how easy it is to get access to puberty blockers and surgery to 'transition' to another gender, but it is unbelievably difficult to get the medications and medical necessities for other health issues. I know someone with vitiligo. Maybe 80% of their body is covered and their insurance won't do a thing to cover any treatments or medications. This world is a joke.

I’m on the same boat. I’m a DeTransitioner as well, and it is absolutely nuts as to how easy you can get access to hormones and approval for surgery. Also a strong point to make is when you tell your doctors that you want to stop taking hormones (the ones from the clinic), they kinda get a little hostile to you.
I’m not anti-trans, but I am Pro “it need to be harder to access this kind of stuff because it can definitely change your life”.
I did happen to get the surgery and find out afterwards that I needed a therapist OUTSIDE the clinic to work out deep rooted trauma (SA survivor) and realize that I was never happy transitioning.
The main thing was that I never was consistent taking hormones. So I still have my natural feminine features and voice. It’s just that I don’t have a chest anymore, which I have grown accepting of because I still very much look like a woman, also breast cancer is pretty up there within my family.

Things like abuse, bullying, and even depression due to not fitting into societal standards can cause children to become confused about their gender identity/oreintation. Her story is identical to someone I met a few years back. I met a girl who passed as a boy, and she believed she was born into the wrong body as a kid. Now her as an adult and already gone through the transition through insurance as a teen, she realized her thoughts came from her years of abuse and bullying. She regretted it but some of the changes were permanent. That was the 1st time I ever heard that this happens. Why society is angry at parents who want to dig deeper is something I will never understand as the aftermath that comes with making such a irreversible decision can be a harder pill to swallow.

Thank you Dr. Phil. I even didn’t like being a girl at the age of seven. I had trouble with my peers and was socially awkward. The people I looked up to the most were my brother and my father, and the characters in movies I best related to were usually boys. I enjoyed being attractive as a young adult, but even after marrying, I still wished I was a man. It wasn’t until I reached my thirties that I became comfortable with being female. It is by the grace of God that I wasn’t introduced to this idea and otherwise protected by family and a Christian worldview.

I'm a trans man and I love myself, feel fortunate that I get to take testosterone and had top surgery.
However, it's insane to me how quickly these things can be approved wherever she lives!
Potentially trans people should go to therapy first thing and see over time if they really do have gender dysphoria. This diagnosis is insanely life changing. Trans people often also have other mental health diagnoses and the therapist should really know the difference.,When I was in high school my dysphoria was mistaken for depression because I said I didn't want to keep living in my body.
Also, a person can truly be trans and choose not to go through any medical changes and they shouldn't be judged for it.

@@TeaBagOfChaos but isn't one of the main treatments medical transition to align with the gender they identify with to help ease their dysphoria?
Also I disagree with the 'potential' part of whether trans people should go to therapy first. I think they should because there are a lot of issues they may have faced growing up being trans or feelings they need to work thru. Therapy is great in general to get if you can tbh. Also I think its also important because it can catch people who will ruin their body if they aren't actually dypshoric and medically transition.
For me, I soccially transitioned (ftm), was pushing to get hormones (like mental breakdown level panic attacks at times because I wanted to transition so badly) but my psych realized it was something else and I got therapy to help with my mental health issues. I have BPD and I had identity disturbance from it which was due to the fact I was in a supportive youth group who had a lot of LGBTQ+ people in it, specifically several trans youth, and my BPD caused me to unconciouslly 'mimic' how they felt. It felt real to me at the the time but I didn't realize until I got treatment for my BPD and left the group to go to college that I realized it was my BPD caused me to mimic it as I stopped mimicing it. My psych realized this early on as he was the one who diagnosed me and help me get treatment.
I actually know 3 people who were female and diagnosed BPD and/or who had childhood trauma who were transitioning or identifying as a different gender around the same age/time as me and its only when they got treatment that they realized it wasn't that they were trans but like me is that they hated/didn't love themselves, didn't have an 'identity' or feel 'whole', didn't feel validated at home and transitioning into an idealized/other person made them feel supported/loved/heard and be able to distance themselves from those feelings about themselves as a whole and/or their trauma(s).
I was lucky and got 'caught' by my psych who put off and I was able to 'de-transition' just socially but the others? They started medically transitioning and I only saw 1 on occasion after I found all this out. We all started transitioning in late highschool/early twenties which seems to be the pattern for people who de-transition.
Also, in terms of BPD and mis-diagnosis of dysphoria, when I was looking up BPD and transitioning after being told I had to wait because my psych thought I was having an identity disturbance issue I saw THREADS of people with BPD talking about transitioning, regretting it/realizing it doesn't solve the underlying 'feelings/issues' they have and becoming more mentally unstable due to actual dysphoria and hopelessness they felt because at that time there were NO talks online about de-transitioning or what life would be like after on top of having surgery removing parts that aligned with their original gender that they now realize they were the entire time. So most only knew that they couldn't and only a few people mentioned it to them on the forums in the replies but later and hopefully not too late if you catch my drift.
Trans kids with dysphoria deserve to get help and have access to be able to transition. Their mental health matters but so do those kids who have mental illnesses, trauma or issues making them seek out support or hate themselves so much they wish to be a completely different person but don't know the difference. Most people, not necessarily only professionals, now would jump to that it is dysporia and not identity disturbance or other issues much like how you said your gender dyshorpia was not looked into further and labelled as just depression. I think that therapy is good because it helps people in general and that it can offer support to the person whether they decide to transition or not but really making sure there arent underlying reasons helps prevent someone from transitioning and that not being the best course of action for them.
I think getting therapy while also socially transitioning (not putting a stop to the social transition while getting therapy and also changing aspects of my life helped me realize that I wasn't trans and have the support to de-transition socially) helps someone who isn't trans or questioning (because not everyone who questions their gender ends up being trans) still have validation and support while also having an 'out' without long lasting physical effects and for people who are genuinely trans it helps with dysphoria while they wait to medically transition and learn coping skills to help with coping with any AHs they may face who are transphobic. IMo this helps everyone because it doesn't take away the ability to transition but allows people to explore their gender without the 'concrete' decision medically and knowing they can de-transition and not be unsupported (that was a really hard part about de-transitioning for me bc I was either used as a transphobes excuse/example to be transphobic without my consent and around this time was when it was thought that people were transitioning for attention/de-transitioning meant you were attention seeking, or at leasts thats what I experienced from my family). Had I not had the support and therapy I had I wouldn't have felt supported enough to de-transition and not feel trapped in my decision to identify as male. It may have became 'too late' for me when I realized if I fully transitioned that that wasn't 'me'. Just like the girl in the video tho I support trans people, I have seen their struggles up close being in the community, but I have seen and heard of what happens to those of us who 'slip' thru the cracks and transition without properly checking.

They’re lazy and incompetent and it’s scary to witness when you’re actually mentally or physically ill and are unable to get the help you need. She blocked me. I said this after her brother came out as trans and their parents immediately gave him hormone blockers at 13. It’s been 4 years and he is currently detransitioning now. I think this is a very serious issue but I’m so glad I was right.
*EDIT:* Just to be clear, I am not transphobic. I know trans people exist and I want them to get the help they need (if it’s help with transitioning or anything else) but I do have a problem with kids being allowed to transition. With how common and normal it is to question and have phases, kids will be in more danger of becoming a detransitioner if they are allowed to transition so easily. I’m bisexual and polyamorous, I obviously questioned my own gender too and found that I’m lucky to be cis. I’m scared of what could of happened if I told someone I was questioning my gender and they did what these people are doing and handed be T or something.

There is an interview with a man who transitioned into a woman and is trying to RE-transition back into a man on the channel Soft White Underbelly. The person they interviewed on there said almost exactly what this woman is saying.
There is also something called affirmation therapy, meaning that therapists and doctors aren't allowed to talk you "out of" the idea of transitioning because it would be considered hate speech/transphobic. This is really messed up and I hope more people get as much (real!!) pre-operative information before taking anything like hormones or surgery.

    I have detransitioned.
I got my mastectomy and I have a voice just like hers.
I transitioned and told my psychologist and doctor that I was male..not realizing what I was doing. It didn't come up why I was doing it until I've already changed my name and lived as a man for 10 years.
I transitioned in order to stop men from touching me. My history of sexual assault as a child was too much to handle that I suppressed it and it didn't come up until my early 30's with nightmares and night terrors.
I went so far with this and convinced all of my family members and friends that I was male that I feel I can't go back.
Maybe I was just a tomboy. Maybe I was a girl who would do anything to stop being SA'd and stop being the one who was submissive.
I was raised by a father who never valued me and always saw me as this inferior submissive thing that I hated the idea that it was all I was in society; a submissive female under the thumb of men who always got to be better than me, treated better than me.
That's why I did it....and I deeply regret it. I ruined my life.

Was about to transition too with the same reasoning you had but I didn't realize it back then. I just wanted to be a boy because I hated the idea about the stereotypical woman because I didn't fit the box. I also was SA'd as a child. Now I realize why I felt that way. I'm just glad I decided not to go through transitioning. I would've regretted it.

Social worker in a school here. In my expirience it is 4 out of 5 girls who claim to be trans but in reality have the same history of SA you described. After one year of talking to me and therapists almost all of them go back to being female. That's why in my country you have to do a lot of psychological tests before you can even consider a full transition.

Proud of you for telling your story!
I wish deep therapy is a requirement if you want to transition and they should be approved by multiple therapists. I feel like in this day and age, if you deny people and tell them your doubts, they will automatically label you as homophobic or transphobic and it puts pressure on the medical system.

I think a lot of people feel like her. I once knew a gay guy and even in his 30s he was still going back and forth about whether he wanted to take hormones and have a gender change, then other days (most days) he was happy being a gay male. He never did take hormones or have surgery. He's R.I.P. now.

I did come out to some family members. I confused my internalized misogyny and trauma that made me feel repulsed from being desired by grown men when I was so young as gender dysphoria.

She talks about it like it's kind of sad that she was able to get hormones so quickly, but ultimately it's pretty good for doctors to just do this without having to scrutinize a person up and down because there are nonbinary people without gender dysphoria that just want a bit of a different body. Hormone replacement therapy can help if a nonbinary person wants to undergo a little bit of feminization

She is so brave for speaking about this on live TV. The sad reality is there's many more cases like this than is reported, and many de-transitioners are embarrassed, ashamed, or afraid of being Epsteined if they dare speak out against this sick narrative being shoved in our faces. I respect the LGBT community, but the reality is, adolescence is a very weird time for childhood as many changes are happening as they mature into adulthood, and they are not mentally capable of making decisions that can affect them for the rest of their lives.

The same thing happened to me! Now I have been living completely openly transgender for years and when I went into my doctor after a few years of living as a woman my doctor spoke to me for about 20 minutes and immediately threw hormones at me without any other questioning. I thought it would take at least a few months of multiple appointments for him to agree and approve me for hormones but it seemed like he just wanted to throw the hormones at me and get me out of his office. It is way too easy to get on these hormones and way too easy to get these surgeries. There needs to be better care and more investigations done by doctors and therapists before these things are pushed forward.
