Hi thank you so much for taking time to pass on your knowledge. It's so kind of you.
I play Saxophone Trumpet and Didgeridoo. I have just this week started to play NAF, so your help is very much appreciated.
As I live you Wales in uk ,we do have some people here that make NAF. The only problem we have here is by the time we pay for the Flute, we then have to pay big shipping costs and then import duty. So you can see it runs very expensive for us here to buy NAF.
The one I have now is a Eb but I do find the holes a little on the large side. My flute is made from Sycamore and it does have a nice rich voice.
I'm now on the lookout for a A ,and F#.
Anyway it's getting late here now, so good night and thank you again .
Take care and May your God go with you.
    Roy.

Hi Roy - glad you're picking up a NA flute! A very good maker here in the US is Odell Borg at High Spirits Flutes. They are digitally tuned so the notes are precise enough to play along with other instruments like guitar, piano, bands, etc. I recommend A or E so it's easier to play with other instruments.
Keep me posted on your search for a flute! If you have any flute questions, feel free to reach out to me at www.KevinVillageStone.com. Cheers!

@WhisperingLightMusic thank you so much. I have wanted to order a flute the only problem is.
The postage charges from US is so expensive. They when they arrive here we have to pay tax and handling charges again. 🙄

@@ROY-COLLEY Man that's lame. What if someone sends you something as a gift? Do they still tax it etc?

    • @ROY-COLLEY

@@WhisperingLightMusic Yes they can, and if the cost of the post is over £30 which I believe is around $38. They the post office here puts a handling charge on it too.

    I really liked your videos!
I would like to ask you:
I am a newbie to native flutes, but I have some experience on other flutes and instruments. So I thought about buying a double native american flute, which comes with a variable pedal note and 6 holes on the main flute. Would you say that is too much?
Regrettably I cant test the flute before buying, because they are very rare on my country and so I have to kinda make a blind choice.
    Thank you

    • @WhisperingLightMusic
      @WhisperingLightMusic  5 ปีที่แล้ว

The doubles take a lot more air - if you are new I would recommend getting your playing technique down on a regular 6-hole. I don't recommend 5-hole or placing a leather strap over the 3rd hole on a 6-hole flute - it develops bad habits and finger positioning. Hmmm... I should do a tutorial on that!
If you're going to order a flute online, try Odell Borg's flutes at www.highspirits.com. His flutes are reasonably priced and play very well (I use them in concert). They are also tuned with a digital tuner so you can play easily with other instruments like guitar and piano.
Contact me anytime if you have questions!

    Hi.
    2 questions:
Is western red cedar good for flute?
Is F# key flute capable of lovely low, mellow voice?
    Thank you.

    • @WhisperingLightMusic
      @WhisperingLightMusic  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Yes, western red cedar is an excellent wood. Be sure to protect it with a hard case if you intend to travel with it. A cost saving case is a length of PVC pipe with caps for both ends and decorate by covering it in leather or nice fabric.
F# is the traditional key but you can go lower. Em bass, also known as E "deep" is lower and is in a key that is easy to jam with guitar or piano. High Spirits flutes (Odell Borg) has a model called "Condor" that goes as low as C and has a very deep and warm sound due to being made from walnut. I used it on "Sierra" (also here on the Whispering Light channel)
      Good luck and happy fluting!
      Kev

And also can you include the key of that flute? Thanks again!

Jake Alcazar Hi Jake - that flute is made by Jose' Cabezas in Northern California (originally he's from Ecuador from a family of musicians and medicine men). The tuning, scale, and hole pattern are exactly the same as North American Native flutes but with a blunt mouthpiece instead of a tapered one. It is made or aromatic western cedar and is an "E-deep" (E minor bass) key. You can purchase his flutes at www.ancientwinds.net. I also have that flute and others posted on my website with links to the makers at www.WhisperingLight.com (in the About section - Native Flutes). Good luck!

Whispering Light Music Respectfully- I am trying to learn about the flute and it seems everywhere I turn folks are talking about them as though everyone already knows something about them. So those that know nothing ( me ) can only sit and scratch my head and move on to the next video or internet site. However, knowing nothing- even reading an internet site isn't much help. I am 56 now so trying to remember what I learned back in school isn't an option....That's why I turned to a video....Growing up we always went to the Cascade Mts every wk and participated in the pow wows. I miss those days and remember them fondly, thats one thing I wish I could go back and re live in my life. Being fair skinned I do have the indian blood in me and it runs deep. Being an adult I am a wood worker, my mother got me into that. I have it in my head to make a flute. Thus going on you tube- thus- finding you and a couple others. I have found that I love the lower deep sound better. Its so much more peaceful sounding. The walnut wood flute you played. I am learning the minor / major A and C antatonic - sharp ............. jeezzzzzz ..The one thing is that nobody but 1 man that I found wants to share the measurements between holes. I do have the size of the holes.....I am determined to make a flute even if it doesn't turn out right, I have to try. I am also going to buy one I think. I have seen in videos that folks buy one and even up just buying 1 or 2 more -buying UP-. I want to just buy a good one in the first place. Do you recommend a good maker of flutes ? I want to learn to play.

Kevin, Oh my !! THAT would be fantastic !! What an amazing thing to do for all of us that are so interested in learning . Its not just "any" flute either, or just any music. Its that which will keep our heritage alive for our own future generations to come. I am from Montana and remember going to powwows every week when I was a little girl. Getting dressed up dancing around the huge fire as the flames reached the sky and the smoke going beyond . With the beating of the drums and the Native Americans singing in Native tongue. Then the flutes would play. I really miss those days. I can't build a huge fire in my yard and dance around it because somebody will lock me up. I can learn the flute and play for my kids and grandchildren. You can help me do this for my family, and others do it for theirs. Even if they haven't thought of it, once they see this they may become interested in doing the same. I sure hope so. Now I need to buy a real native american flute !! I want one with low deep sounds. One made from Walnut seems to be the one. I'm not sure yet. I just know I want a soothing mellow fall asleep sound. Thank you so very much Kevin. I can't wait for all your help

Hi Dear - just replied on your other post about what kind of deep flute to get - let me add this: Walnut in a bass flute has a nice warm tone. I have a "Condor" bass flute from Odell Borg I record and perform with. I named it Sleeping Bear because it's sound is guaranteed to put children and adults to sleep. I use it in meditation classes and have even put kids to sleep in the middle of Native storytelling. Blessings!
