I'm really happy to see that there are still so many races to compete for in this version! That was one of my favorite things about the original also - there's no direct fighting with the other players, but there are so many limited resources and you're competing with your opponents for all of them.
Kind of surprised to see you guys like it. You mentioned that you could draft something your opponent really needs. Seeing you are a care bear player, I was surprised to hear that wasn't something that turned you off.
we're usually okay with hate drafting. sometimes it gets a bit too over the top for us, but this wasn't one of those times :)

Argh. I thought about getting it at Essen and decided against it. i think I regret that now. Maybe a used copy here or there.
If someone does not have either, would you recommend they start with this? And if they like it, then get Orleans. Or if they have this, would Orleans be too redundant?

i think the decision of which to go with would mostly revolve around how much interaction do you want between players. original orleans is very multi-player solitaire, while this is more interactive. also this plays in half the time, so that's a consideration as well. if i could only own one, i'd go with orig orleans, because the way the events are done is really great and it's a shame that wasn't brought over here.

I’ve noticed a new trend with publishers making roll and write games these days.
Some don’t have free downloadable player sheets anymore. This game for example… and Dice Kingdoms of Valeria, etc. they make you buy refill packs. Kind of a rip off. I laminate anyway, but still.
Have you notice this as well?
i use dry erase sleeves, which are awesome :)
I usually laminate a set as well. But I have just noticed that companies are now selling extra sheet pads when earlier they offered them as a free pdf download.
