Rugby Test Match - France vs Springboks 17 October 1992

The first test win for the Springboks since readmission! All in all, the 1992 Springbok tour to France and the UK was not a successful one. Having come off the back of two straight losses against the All Blacks and Australia, the Boks went on this tour as underdogs. Throw is rife provincialism within the squad and it was easy to see the Boks weren't expected to deliver.
John Williams brought in 7 new players from the team that lost against the Wallabies in Cape Town and controversially selected Willie Hills at hooker. The changes paid off and although Sebastien Viars had an off day with the boot, the Boks played some really good rugby and did enough to beat the French by 20 - 15.

Those French counter attacks! It looked as if every attack from deep was practice for the try from the other side of the world which France scored against the All Blacks two years later. Every French back was turbo charged not to mention Cabannes who was faster than most centres. Great highlights and a great game much more exciting than the often turgid fare we are presented with today.

How did France not win - sublime attacking bar the last pass in many instances, it was like they were playing 7's.
Boks do what they always do well, stand up to the challenge, take the smart options. It always helps having a 10 who is an outstanding tactical kicker
