The standard for most (if not all) major international carriers is that the crew takes it in turns to be pilot flying or pilot monitoring.
The problem that was discovered re the San Francisco 777 crash by Asiana was that the airline was having captains do pretty much all the landings, so people were being appointed to captain with sufficient hours but far less take off and landing experience than ought to have been the case. Also an excessive use of autopilot.
Even in this case I was surprised how late he left it to turn off the autopilot; most vids I've seen they disengage AP quite some distance out. Nothing wrong with it but still a bit surprising.

@@steeltrap3800 the reason for late AP disengagement might be due to a bit hazy condition. Wind is not that significant anyway. Being a Malaysian pilot obviously he knew the approach and landing like the back of his hand. Landing was super smooth so he is good.

These A380s are built by Airbus in Toulouse, France. When they first started coming off the production line I lived near Perpignan, about 100 miles south of Toulouse. Perpignan is a very quiet airport so Airbus used it to train their customers' pilots on flying the A380. Incredibly,I watched these giants do circuits as if they were using a Cessna 150. They touched down with a brief puff of smoke from their tyres and then applied full throttle and commenced another circuit. I agree they are not the most beautiful of planes but well over 100 have been built but it seems their day has now passed.

I have so much respect for the pilots in the air all day everyday and so mcu new tech which comes out everyday, which the pilots have to learn and get tested on, when there's upgrades down on the aircraft ? also to think the 747 is still flying and i can see more and more pilots required to keep up with demand, its upto the airline companies to make sure they have a excelents roster and pilot turnaround, otherwise there's problems with not enough sleep for pilots. :) keep up the great work and fly the friendly skies and thank you for keeping all those passengers safe while flying and especially all the certified engineers who have to put their lives on the line when signing off on all the maintenance works which is performed at each plane they do, if only they had the record of qantas . :)
