- The oral nicotine product Zyn has skyrocketed in sales and popularity in recent years, shifting the landscape of the U.S. tobacco market. This remarkable growth has thrust Zyn into a culture war, with Sen. Chuck Schumer calling for a federal crackdown on the flavored pouches and Tucker Carlson becoming an unofficial Zyn spokesman.
WSJ explores what we can learn about Zyn when we test it in a lab and how transformative the product could be for the tobacco industry.

Hello everyone. I’m in my mid-40’s and have been a smoker for far too long. I was around 12 year’s old when I smoked my first cigarette. ZYN has helped me tremendously with cutting back on smoking. Currently, I’m down to roughly 2-3 cigarettes a day (sometimes none at all.) At the peak of my habit, I was smoking at least a pack a day. Although I haven’t quit smoking completely, I really feel confident that I will eventually be able to with the help of ZYN nicotine pouches. Take care and I hope y’all have a wonderful day!

The nicotine pouch discourse is annoying to me.
Nicotine chewing gum with fruit flavours was never a problem, why are the pouches? And it's obviously not a lobbying problem from big Tobacco, Philip Morris owns Swedish Match, the largest producer of all things Snus & nicotine pouches and Brittish American Tobacco owns the closest competitor to ZYN, VELO.
Because it's really bleeding into the youth culture. Nicotine pouches was never really something us younger people dealt with. But this and vaping is unecessary when we weren't smokers from the first place.
I was wondering the same but I think the only real difference is the nicotine gum was marketed to help people quit smoking and nicotine altogether. I doubt this was the latter was the case but seems silly they would even really care about this at all.

Long time Zyn user here that recently quit. I did vape for a year or so then quit. Hopped on Zyn after a couple of years and got hooked pretty badly on them. I only used three a day for breakfast, lunch, and dinner with some occasional extras on the weekend if I was feeling it.
It was and still is very hard to stay off of them. The cravings only recently went away after multiple relapses. While I totally agree that these are amazing for people that smoke or just wanna quit altogether don’t be fooled into thinking these are not addicting as well. It seems easy at first but man, I see people with those and wanna pop one in or I want to buy a can so much. Mint pouches help me stay off but it’s almost a necessity to prevent me from buying a can of Zyn.
The worst part of it all is I just don’t inherently think it’s bad. But there’s just a deep thought inside that can’t imagine it’s GOOD for you as well long term.
My advice if you’re a person that has never really messed with nicotine, just stay away. It’s not worth it, the money you waste for a maybe 2 minute buzz just isn’t worth it. Eventually you’ll just get used to it and get like a 5-10 second buzz then you’ll want more and boom, you’re dropping hundreds just to feel something. Lucky for me I limited myself, but I know friends that go through a can a day easily.
For those folks that smoke/wanna quit. Do these but wind yourself down from 6s to 3s and quit altogether. They’re very easy, helpful, and I think have a positive impact as long as you QUIT. But that’s a lot easier said than done.
Stay safe out there everyone. Careful with these things. I’m still gonna be strong as best as I can.
Nicotine pouches like Zyn are EXTREMELY addictive, almost to the point where if you use a few packs you might not quit for years.
The harmfull effects however are potential and marginal at best, apart from gum damage and the cost ofcourse.
I can understand Schumers view of trying to prevent the next generation from ever having a relationship with nicotine, but id be very surprised if america went for an all-out preventive ban of a product with few proven negative health effects.
I use about 24 pouches per day and have no plans to ever quit. It has very little effect on my economy so i dont really see a reasom to kick the habit unless new research results are released.
Why would anyone think these weren’t addictive? Its pure nicotine. 😂
You can do whatever you put your mind to. You can do it!
As an “ex” long time weed smoker, I agree with your statement. If you haven’t started doing a drug that has “possible” upsides, just don’t, stay away. Being sober just saves you time, money and energy. Don’t risk it for the biscuit 🥯
I used to have a friend who was a huge supporter of tobacco. I thought he was nuts. But as I got older, I realized that he was right. If you're addicted to nicotine, you can use that as a tool to help build positive behavior by rewarding yourself with a Zyn. For example, having a Zyn after a workout will help build a positive correlation in your brain to working out. My point is, with Zyns, you can really help alleviate the downsides of traditional tobacco and use it as a tool as well. Below is an abstract from the National Library of Medicine.
Beneficial effects of nicotine
M E Jarvik 1
Abstract
Nicotine in tobacco brings illness and death to millions of people. Yet nicotine in its pure form has the potential to be a valuable pharmaceutical agent. Nicotine fairly specifically binds to the cholinergic nicotinic gating site on cationic ion channels in receptors throughout the body. This action stimulates the release of a variety of neurotransmitters including especially catecholamines and serotonin. When chronically taken, nicotine may result in: (1) positive reinforcement, (2) negative reinforcement, (3) reduction of body weight, (4) enhancement of performance, and protection against; (5) Parkinson's disease (6) Tourette's disease (7) Alzheimers disease, (8) ulcerative colitis and (9) sleep apnea. The reliability of these effects varies greatly but justifies the search for more therapeutic applications for this interesting compound.

Nicotine increases my resting heart rate by 20-30 bpm and takes my blood pressure to its healthy limits. I live an active life and regularly track these things, it’s remarkable how immediate the spike shows on the data. Emotionally, the nicotine numbs the peaks of my emotions, so I’m never really able to feel happiness, sadness etc to the extents that I know I’m capable of - I just feel kinda muted and always thirsty for more nicotine.
Living with that level of compulsive desire can overlap into some of my other decision making and has given me challenges when trying to use good judgement.
When quitting nicotine, which I’ve endured maybe a dozen times over the last two decades, I experience 1-2 months of brain fog and tiredness. when I think I’ve finally cut the habit, someone could smoke or vape in front of me and the compulsive desire to ask to partake is still quite strong. I believe fully that once the space for nicotine addiction has been made inside yourself, it never fully heals, so better to just not go there in the first place.
You described perfectly what its like, nicotine for sure numbs my emotions and makes me somewhat of a zombie. After quitting nicotine you just wake up happy to be alive and you can feel the difference in your state of mind

You’re still at a high risk for stroke and heart attack. Nicotine all by itself is a POTENT vasoconstrictor, meaning it reduces blood supply all over your body following ingestion. Over time, that adds up and will lead to cell death and vaso diseases like heart attack and stroke.
I switched from tobacco to Zyn for about 6 months. This help put some distance between the "tobacco experience" and myself while still supplying me with the nicotine portion. Obviously, nicotine is addictive, but an equal part of the addiction is the habit and the routines we have with it. For example, cigarettes and your morning coffee. After I got rid of my routines, I was able to just stop using Zyn and I've been nicotine free for 5 months now.

These zyns you get in America may not be moist but they do slightly burn, or seem spicy. My first one was a non flavor and it smacked me 😂 I wasn’t ready for the burn. Now I use citrus.
I’d love to get my hands on the Swedish ones
They're the same just stronger. They burn here too if you're new and go away after a bit, exactly the same as if you were to use those Swedish ones long term. The can having a tray is a nice touch though.
how does a disposal tray make the product "very different" lol
ive had swedish and american zyns and they are basically the same
@@MiddleAgedMillenialyou can buy them online, but tbh the only difference in Swedish ones i see is flavors and do burn a little, it is cheaper compared to the one you buy at gas stations tho, and yeah the tray is a plus on Swedish ones
How fkn wierd is that dude singing with dip pouches in his mouth. People are literally sheep. They do anything their friends do or want to do.
Upper decky lip cushion might be the cringiest line I’ve ever heard
UPPER DUCKY GUM PILLIES UPPER DUCKY LIP CUSHIONS 🗣️
They care about your health only when it affects their pockets . Why aren’t they this serious with our food
22, I was doing zyns for a year and a half after vaping for 4 years, i quit a month ago. I do think that they are much better than other forms of tobacco but there are still potential risks involved.
I was just recently diagnosed with an unrecoverable tooth and had it pulled. I had a traumatic injury to it 8 years ago that required a root canal. I only recently discovered that my tooth was in the later stages of resorption (my body was rejecting it from the inside out and bone mass was decreasing) and the tooth that was effected was the place where my zyn usually went.
looking back at the x-rays from a year ago it was clear that there was something wrong but resorption is a rare case so the dentist missed it. I do not know if zyns were the cause of my issue but i know that they were not helping my case if anything they were speeding up the process of resorption.
I think that sounds like you had a bad tooth, not a pouch
@@nathanchandler18 Snus will make your mouth slowly dissolve and give you throat or mouth cancer eventually. Look up pictures of long time snus users where their lip ouches are enourmus.
vaping can cause dry mouth which in turn causes tooth decay. Zyns on the other hand cause gum recession. I doubt Zyns had any serious effect on tooth but rather the surrounding tissue.
Not including Freezer Tarps in helping grow Zyn is criminal
Actually surprised to see they’ve only recently become popular in the US. You won’t find a lot of teens who haven’t tried pouches in Denmark
I’ve been debating buying these and now I definitely will
theyre fun and easier than stinky ciggies
They are the best
I think Zyn will help prevent vaping in places such as school as vaping is super bad but an addiction to a nicotine pouch isn't as unhealthy
As someone with asthma who get awful asthma attacks from being exposed to cigarette smoke, I say please use snus and Zyn. Or really, anything that isn't cigarettes.
At least here in Sweden, not that many smokes. It's better for everyone!
I love when people tell me how to live my life, makes me want to do the exact opposite out of spite.
She didn't tell you to do anything, she asked @@smelltheglove2038
Nicotine pouches and the derived versions of it have been around in Sweden for a long time. Great alternative to cigarrettes. You get what you actually want (nicotine) without inhaling anything. Lots of Swedish research has been done on tobacco Snus too, not really finding any strong links to the types of diseases that you can develop from smoking. Nicotine itself hasn't been proven harmful either (in normal doses). What is problematic is quite simple, we know that inhaling anything that is not good clean air is bad for you, it's as simple as that. Having this as an alternative for smoking is fantastic and can greatly help reduce the rates of lung cancer and other problematic diseases.
Thanks gonna try it!
My dentist had me switch to Zynn over my dip. I did that for a couple of years and quit all together in February 2022. Haven't dipped or Zynned since.
imagine your parents see a clip of you consuming nic packets on a wsj video for social media attention
I have stage 4 COPD at 36 years old and switching to Zyn has saved my life. If you want to know if it's good or bad just ask me im living proof that Zyn is a great product. I don't care who if Tucker is using them or the dahli lama it is keeping me from losing years with my family.
No it hasn’t 😭
zyns helped me quit vaping after 7 years and now i’m leaning off of the zyns too! they’ve been a great thing
Many of my friends have stopped smoking and started using Zyn or product similar to zyn
Apparently our Troops LIVE on this stuff when In The Field
Can confirm
It helps on those long field ops where we can’t smoke cigarettes
👍👍
@@rapp5605 Wouldnt want to put yourself in danger now lol
We ran out in Okinawa and we were about to riot.
As a Scandinavian, I've been using Nicotine pouches daily, for YEARS. Can't say I've had any health issues as of yet.
How do your gums feel
I will co-sign this. Helped me cut down on cigarettes alot!
It can damage your gums surely, but you have to use alot, and i mean alot before that happens. Everything in moderation yk.
@@krispy4698 Gums are feeling fine, even after 10 years of use :P
depends. I had to stop Snus and later also skruf xtra. Gum above my front teeth started to vanish which left my tooth necks uprotected, so I had to stop. Sadly those effects are permanent.
Don’t worry they’ll eventually appear and it will be too late
We've actually been using Zyn/"snus" in scandinavia (Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland) since 1800-1900! Very popular here.
Zyn is the perfect product. Helps you focus, makes you more eloquent. And doesn't cause cancer. Powerful!
eeeeeeh, lets not make bold claims about cancer yet 😅
I have never heard of zyn but now I want to try it
If you do tobacco products, please do as a substitute.
If you don't do any tobacco please don't. Nicotine is still an addictive chemical. Your wallet will thank me later.
Same here ima do it just to buck
If you haven't vaped or used nicotine before, your wallet will hurt if you start
If it gets you off ciggs it must be good .
It gets you off cigs and on to Zyn. It won't help you drop smoking, the nicotine addiction is something you have to overcome through willpower, not hoping another nicotine product will do that for you.
If anything, it will make your addiction worse, as this is straight up nicotine, that's being advertised as "safer" than cigarettes, which means people will consume way more nicotine through Zyn, like they do through heating tobacco sticks, like Heets and such.
Zyn is not a solution to anything, it's another product that makes you addicted to it, so that Philip Morris makes money off of you.
And consuming high doses of nicotine over prolonged periods of time have VERY bad consequences.
@@ala-th3lnyep, i used them thinking it wil help to quit , ended up using for 1 whole year wasting crazy money , and the holes in my mouth idk when will my gum heal back
I mean countless people have used zyn to stop smoking. It is pure nicotine, so no carcinogens. Its safer than alcohol and more akin to drinkinf a coffee @ala-th3ln
@@ala-th3lnid rather have nicotine going in me without a bunch of other chemicals messing up my lungs, obviously a better choice to quit smoking and reduce nicotine intake.
It's literally switching from cigs to cigs. It's not different.
I don’t consume anything nicotine related, but if this helps people quit vaping and smoking, I fully support it. It doesn’t smell bad, there is no smoke, absolutely nothing that would bother anyone around the person using it.
They're literally only nicotine salts and a tiny amount of flavoring. No tar, carcenogens, hidden chemicals, pesticide residue, etc.
My friends were really into these and I never really got the appeal, my problem with nicotine addiction is I also just love the sensation of smoking. I'm currently 3 months clean off all nicotine and smoking anything but I'm definitely still addicted and a few slip ups could get me back to near daily use.
I mean it's probably better than cigs or vapes? When I started vaping non-socially (i.e personal use, not just with friends), I started getting chest tightness and aches even though I wasn't really coughing and decided I really have to fight this. I've been smoking on and off since 13, but getting off vaping at 24 was the first time I actually dealt with addiction withdrawal from nicotine for 3+ weeks until it calmed down.
Nicotine is just dangerous, I don't fully regret it but I definitely got burnt playing with fire and I'll have to deal with whatever issues come from it and the forever mental battle of addiction. Just like alcohol and some of the food they let us have - just bc it's legal doesn't mean it's good for you.
I'll add to anyone on the fence - it definitely is noticeable to be off nicotine. Within a month my chest ache/tightness almost completely went away and my mood and energy levels are generally improved. It almost feels like shedding a very thin lair of skin and being a slightly better version of yourself once the major cravings and symptoms go away. It's worth the fight. My life's not magically better and I still deal with cravings sometimes and tough decisions to say no bc my friends still smoke - but it's not making things worse.
Every addictive item whether it be marijuana or alcohol, has a safe and socially acceptable alternative for people trying to quit. Except for Cigarettes. Every tobacco alternative has received massive backlash from political groups and the government. The attitude seems to be we hate smoking, but we're not willing to tolerate a compromise that would solve so many problems. It's Cold Turkey or Nothing.
It is a tobacco alternative not cigarette alternative, also difficult to get behind pouches of nicotine that are popular with kids
Having had a nicotine addiction, I don't see how you can call marijuana an "addictive item". It may be habit forming in the way that coffee is habit forming and I'm sure there is the rare individual with some sort of problem with it but I am very sure that going without marijuana doesn't do anything near what going without nicotine did to me every time I tried to quit. Nicotine makes your body physically dependent on it. I don't think that marijuana, mushrooms, LSD, psychedelics in general create physical dependency.
What are the safe, socially acceptable alternatives to marijuana and alcohol??? 😮
@@chedder72 As long as there are people, there's no socially acceptable alternative to anything except to behave as they think you should so that someone can feel superior due to someone else's behavior (smirk).
They seem to have no issues with patches or gum
Ritalin is way better than Zyn.
*Meth is probably better than Ritalin.*
And the combo of both is better. But terrible for the brain.
I chewed tobacco for a couple years. Switched over to zyn/on pouches and worked my way down to 2mg and then nothing. Amazing product
I can’t believe they are just now making a breakdown of this 😂 I have been using zyn pouches since 2015 around 2019 seems like they blew up!
I love the added red accents to the thumbnail to subconsciously gather more clicks lol
I was dipping every day since I was 15 and was finally able to quit after 11 years by switching to zyn in December. I’m still addicted to nicotine but I’m not in danger of losing my jaw or dying from cancer. At this point it’s almost on the same level as a caffeine addiction.
This is exactly what I'm saying, they always trying to say something is bad....at least I'm not smoking anymore!!
I went through 2 cans of welfare bear a day for 15 years. I was able to quit eventually because of zyn
Zyn helped me quit vaping and helped not take a smoke break anymore at work.
I was able to quit smoking pretty easily using these, feel so much better. Was a pack or more day smoker for years
Snus helped me quit smoking, its not healthy. BUT but. It's way safer then smoking. Snus is one of those things i love and appreciate. I couldn't say the same about ciggarettes
is that the stuff you snort like cocaine?
Snus is not safer than smoking lol, it's like switching from cigarette to alcohol addiction. You're just giving yourself gum cancer instead of lung cancer.
me too, it helped my lungs out and helped with the hand to mouth habit and the actual smoke (you dont stink anymore and your nose comes back) they made quitting just the nicotine much easier. no wonder theyre trying to ban em 😂
@@augustcederberg5904 It is objectively safer than smoking. Harm rates are simply much lower, they're an effective harm reduction measure.
@@carleynorthcoast1915 no, that’s snuff.
Zyn is the only product that I’ve seen consistently work to help people quit smoking/vaping.
Because the nicotine is ingested rather than inhale, it doesn’t increase addiction and over time can decrease it - this is backed by tons of research for nicotine gum.
I'm 28 and I just quit yesterday. It's like my eighth attempt. I don't believe that finding a crutch is that great. You're going to feel irritable and all that, but it's better to deal with the issues that are actually bothering me because it's not always the addiction to cigarettes that's causing it.
I didn't know about Zyn but I'm now contemplating on trying them lip cushions.
Man said …OH IT WORKS like it was his first time lol😂
i remember learning that tobacco pouches (the ones where you would have to constantly spit out your spit) causing mouth/gum cancer.
is this not the case for zyn since zyn doesn’t have tobacco and is pure nicotine?
I know its not ideal. But i quit smoking 3 years ago by using 3mg zyn. I was a pack a day smoker. Now a tin of zyn last me 3 days. I'm slowly getting to make my own pouches. I stuff them with all natural non-caffeinated tea.
Three years ago people thought I was clueless. Now everyone loves these bad boys😂
Yeah yeah we know you're the reason they are so popular
I have been taking them for 7+ years
Ryan Grubb was coming to Alabama but his wife didn't want to leave Seattle
as a long time snuser, the main downside is bad breath, the pouch eats your lips on the inside, eats the gums around the teeth, but you dont get lung cancer
It’s not snus look it up and maybe switch
@@nuudelz3711 Its not snus but i can bet that you will get the same effects on your gum and teeth your teeth will loosen if not carefull..-
