And, wait for another baby to pop out every year. That's OK By the time they are four, the eldest can be teaching the three year old to put grains of corn in the rows her pregnant mother is hoeing up with the baby strapped to her back. After he chops wood 7/24 Ron better get to debarking logs for the new room they will soon need and get some animals for husbandry. Hunting alone is too unreliable. They are starting a hard scrabble life. We are the ones who have it good.

I love to cook and clean…it’s when I’m in my happy place. I listen to music, a book or shoot the shit with the kids and do my thing. But i grew up cooking a lot like this in a commune. So now it’s just so easy and fun.

To be clear, you won't find many people who hate the spoilt modern society as much as me, but be careful not to over romanticize the old days TOO much. I would take that basic simple life over modern days any day in a heartbeat, but do not think that people didn't see cooking as much as a chore as we do now. We see Ron and Justine all luvvy duvvy eating popcorn, helping eachother cutting the veggies and stuff like that, but life back then was very rough for many people and basically a struggle each day to survive

Right, that’s why the entertainment industry is booming. We as a species has never had this much free time before. Basic life activities took up most of our day. Hunting, cooking, cleaning, mending clothing, tending to the garden and livestock, all things that needed done to survive and took up all the daylight hours.

They weeded the garden. Grandma never lost a chance to weed the garden. Extra chores were either weed the garden or clean the chicken coop.
You don't squabble at grandma's or you get to follow her around the garden and weed ( or water )

If you want to know more read Breaking the Vicious Cycle, I don’t even have any pain anymore where before I woke up and had pain after every meal. Was awful. I am still in disbelief that it has worked. However you need to stick to the diet 100% no cheating or else you will fail. I’ve been doing it with my child who also has stomach pains and food sensitivities and it helped her too. I hope this helps you. This makes me imagine how my fourth great-grandfather (1793-1853) must have lived. After he served and fought in the War of 1812, he and his wife immigrated to Washington County, Indiana from Rockbridge, Virginia in 1817. A couple of years later in 1820, they moved across the Muscatatuck River to Jackson County. Both counties are situated within an exceptionally beautiful part of the state with rugged hills known locally as the "Knobs". The Knobstone Trail, known affectionately as the "Little Appalachian Trail", at 60 miles long, is a very challenging hike, but it also takes you to some breathtakingly beautiful vistas! The history combined with with natural beauty of the place just makes it magical to me.

I have been watching your channel for a while already, you are doing great work and I am really enjoying it. And I have noticed one interesting thing - the pastry you show always takes a form of a cookie or a pie. So, I was thinking about it when compared to very rich pastry traditions of Europe, Russia, and Front and Middle East (and I am not talking only upper class pastry, nations there have all sorts of pastry), and I think the reason is that unlike old world that utilized different sorts of ovens to heat the house and hence gave more baking freedom, in America you mostly have just open fire.

Probably as far back as sixty or more years ago, (I'm almost sixty nine-years-old) I remember my beloved Swedish grandmother making buckwheat pancakes for me on the weekends...What surprised her was that I thought they tasted so good as is, with just a little melted butter, that I never needed the syrup they always brought home from their frequent trips to Canada to visit family....On special occasions, we'd also have herring that my aunts would pickle...Usually our meals were cooked on a traditional 50's/60's stove, but sometimes our wood burning stove would be used instead...BTW, back in the days our heating coal would be delivered through a special opening in the basement coal room where it was shoveled into...
I love your channel & all the fond memories they bring of my rural childhood...God bless you...

Life during the 1700s-1800s wasn't all it's cracked up to be. It was a very hard life that took a lot of hard work

Mmmmm! Buckwheat!!! With syrup -- Mom made these for me when I was a little kid. Back then it snowed in the winter and oh the memories!!! Sitting at the table, warm kitchen, snow on the windowsill, happily eating tasty thick buckwheat pancakes drenched in syrup. (PS I grew buckwheat in a large flower pot on my balcony -- it was a great experience)

Oh you should try them! To me they are better then regular pancakes.

They are delicious. I use buttermilk in stead of milk. That acid of the buttermilk makes them tender.

I could watch your channel and "English Heritage" (Mrs. Crocombe's recipes) all day long, and over again! Foods from way back when, made from scratch, and and all the aesthetics are just so beautiful to me.

I love this. It makes me think of my ancestors at this time that either would have been in the original 13 colonies or perhaps have just moved more west. Even though I obviously don't know my ancestors it sort of makes me feel closer to them.

You know, I get a kick out of these video’s. The cabin is neat, how people lived back then was definitely hard. There was no going to the supermarket to buy meat, had to hunt it down…my dad raised pigs and chickens and then would trade a pig for half a cow. Then he’d go hunting and fishing for venison and fish so I can appreciate what people had to do in all of our history. Thanks for helping me remember my dad ❤️❤️❤️

Oh-oh, you didn't say Grace before you ate your food. I thank God every time I have something to eat. I enjoy watching you show how cakes were baked before ovens came along! The pioneers had to be so inventive about cooking their food. I hope that the pork and beans are good! Thanks for sharing the recipes! ~Janet in Canada
