I swear that when I was a child, I saw an ad in an old 1960's magazine of my mother's, for a sort of menstrual cup. It had a flat bottom with a ring on it, and from what I could understand from the very discreet ad (and asking my mom) it was intended not to contain any fluid, but cap off the flow from the cervix. Years later (when I would actually need one) people swore they had never heard of it :/
O Yes there was one in the late 60's and 70's and I know because I was a young woman at that time and bought and tried them. At the time they looked a lot like the ones today but although it was a good idea at the time the cups were flawed and after just a few years they discontinued making them. I had no problem inserting them the problem was that the cup didn't hold much resulting in leakage and having to change them too often.
Interesting video. It does underline the urgent need for more women to be involved in coming up with solutions for female specific issues. It's really bad how awkward and ungainly most of those devices were.
Yes, totally! As far as I am aware, it wasn't until the Chalmers design (designed by actress Leona Chalmers) that a woman was involved in the design! 👍
It's incredible how the cups come a long way and it's barely heard of them until now that they are been taken into consideration. This is awesome! Thank you for the educational video, it help understand and accept this more comfortably.
It's a pity the 1937 one didn't take off. It was actually a decent design, and it could have kept (I'm not sure when disposable menstrual products were invented) 70 years worth of pads and tampons out of landfills.
oh god. The cervical insertion one. I can't even imagine. When I got my IUD in my doctor said I had a "shy cervix" which means she had to try and put the clamp on it like three or four times because it kept receding into my body every time she'd try and lock it in place. She was amazed I hadn't screamed at all or kicked. Needless to say, it was a lot of pain, and that didn't compare to actually inserting the wee thin little tube to put the actual IUD in so HOLY SHIT WHAT SADISTIC MOTHERFUCKER CAME UP WITH THAT MENSTRUAL CUP JESUS CHRIST?!
You make a good point about the size of some of those very early sacks. The men that designed those must have thought our insides practically fall out every month! When you think about the size of the uterus and the fact that menstrual blood I only the lining (it's not like the entire uterus is full or something) it makes sense that we don't secrete huge amounts of fluid.
This was super cool! Also very weird that they have been around for so long but a lot of people have never heard of them (I hadn't either, until half a year ago).
There must be some kind of conspiracy from the non-reusable product companies!! 😂 No, but seriously I can't fathom why they are not more well known about and used!
No, me neither. Some people just can't use them very well, as is the same with tampons of course, but I heard about the 'keeping it out of the news' earlier. It is, of course, not as big a money-maker as a box of tampons every month for the rest of your life will be. Spreading the word around ourselves, I guess ;)
I'm sad you only have 5000 views on this video, it's a huge amount of reaserch you made ! and I'm quite fascinated by all those cups ! I shared your video on my facebook, because world needs to know ! so, thank you for those informations and for the work you have made !
Awesome and hilarious video, just subscribed! Bless those women who actually used enough of those products to encourage development to what we have today!
Oh the cervical one! aaah! I don't think I've unclenched yet! A lot of these seem similar to ileostomy bags which as you rightly point out, would be SO uncomfortable to walk around with between the legs. How on earth would the initial ones even be inserted/removed when the wearer is presumably wearing a corset and can't bend?!
Yeah - they certainly came a long way with the design. Not sure how they could improve upon the current style, but I can't wait to see what the inventors of the world come up with 😂
To address your concern about some of the early versions fitting into knickers, women didn't wear proper knickers (as we would think of them) until the 20th century and generally wore floor length skirts so the devices wouldnt have been so awkward there. My main concern with some of those is that they seem to not have any support system, were they supposed to just dangle there and hold themselves in? 😂
Haha...I have some great mental images of knickerless ladies walking about in their long skirts with crossed legs to stop these 'devices' falling out! 😂
LOVING your videos! your so confident and so relatable!! love the science-y bits because im a med head, and love how you talk about awkward topics without cringing!! subscribed and looking forward to your next videos!
Super fascinating video! Kind of crazy to think that menstrual cups have such a long history. Were the photos of the menstrual cup designs from a kind of patent registry?
This was amazing! Thanks for the research. It's shocking to imagine what seems to be a lack of understanding of the female anatomy apparent in those early designs... AND WHO EXACTLY TESTED THEM?!
I know, right! I mean most of them didn't go into mass production, but I'm assuming there were prototypes! I would hate to have been the wife of the inventor as I guess they would have been the ones to test it out...😧
The one from 1892, could that be a string at the bottom rather than a "collection bag"? To me, it looks like a cup on a telescoping stick like a tampon applicator for insertion and then a string for removal.
Hi, and thanks! Its been quite stressful settling in to my new job, and living away from my partner (and cats!)...the change has hit me much harder than I thought it would, but I'm hoping to film more soon! 👍
Hey, this is kinda just a question for anyone that knows about mestrual cups. You see last week I got my period and I used a menstrual cup for the first time. I did everything it said on the box and for the first two days aside from cramps it was really good but by the third day I got very very sick very quickly to the point of not being able to eat. My question is; Does anyone know of anything that could have caused this related to the mestrual cup??
I mean, being able to wear the cup for the entirety of your period would be awesome....but not if it means having a bag of menstrual fluid waggling about! 😂
most of these designs were from men right? I'm shocked at how little they understood of female anatomy, I mean the vagina is quite short when it's at rest, looking at these designs it seems they thought we walked about with huge long cavities within us

This satisfies both my morbid curiosity and love of history! what a great educational video, and funny too :)
Thank you, I'm glad you liked it😁👍

Dead.

Thanks! I'm hoping to try out some more products (soft cups, period panties, etc) for future videos 👍
Great video ! I didn't think menstrual products could be fun, but you made me laugh quite a few times :D
Thank You so much! I'm glad it made you laugh!☺️
Oh the cervical one! aaah! I don't think I've unclenched yet!

How on earth would the initial ones even be inserted/removed when the wearer is presumably wearing a corset and can't bend?!
Oh gosh I didn't even think of the corset issue......maybe they would need help 😧
Oh my gosh some of those old ones look horrifying, does make you think about what's to come in the future though
Yeah - they certainly came a long way with the design. Not sure how they could improve upon the current style, but I can't wait to see what the inventors of the world come up with 😂

ScienceSheWrote I know you'd have to have some well strong pelvic floor muscles for a few of them 😂

Thank You so much! 😊Many more awkward topics in future videos!
Super fascinating video! Kind of crazy to think that menstrual cups have such a long history. Were the photos of the menstrual cup designs from a kind of patent registry?
Hi - yes they are. If you check in the description box below the video I have linked to all the original patents! 👍
Super educational video! Thank you for doing the research and presenting it in such an informative and summarized way.
you should do more videos!!! They're great
Oh my God that one you keep in your cervix gave me ptsd from my IUD insertion
I'm deeply uncomfortable

"Come on, darling... It can't be THAT bad...!"
So interesting! Thank you for this.
This video was hilarious. I couldn’t imagine wearing some of these
This was super interesting! Thanks for doing the research :)
You're welcome! I'm glad you enjoyed the video! 👍
Very interesting. :) Post more!
Hi, Thanks for watching! I'm hoping to shoot some more videos very soon 👍
thank you 😊👌 very intresting!
You're welcome! 😀
thank's to you I was informed enough to make it work right away! 🙏 I love it✊😁
OMG!😳😂 These designs, some were really horrible but the way you described make it look funnier, feeling better that I'm trying it in 2020 😂😂
I think they thought we bled..gallons!lol
An egregiously sad possibility is that these products were likely experimented upon and against the will of women of African decent.
Great video
Thank You 😃

Either way, this video made my vagina scared.
It's so difficult to tell because the patents were written in such confusing language (www.google.com/patents/US467963)!
I think all vaginas are scared watching this! 😂
Thank you!
Great vid! :)
Lady you are awsome! What are you up to lately? More videos please :)
Hi, and thanks! Its been quite stressful settling in to my new job, and living away from my partner (and cats!)...the change has hit me much harder than I thought it would, but I'm hoping to film more soon! 👍
thanks for your reply you're so sweet! All the best x
Why did you stop making videos??
What on Earth does catamenial mean?!
Can you make a video on how to clean a menstrual cup and what soaps are safe to use?
Hey, this is kinda just a question for anyone that knows about mestrual cups. You see last week I got my period and I used a menstrual cup for the first time. Barbecue tongs? Nonononononononono. Nope.
So many no's!!!!!
Barbecue tongs😂😂😂
I am laughing my ass off the entire video...
I'm glad you enjoyed the video 😜👍
Uahhhh this was so scary! :O Oh my... i love my black and red coloured Ruby Cups :)
Yes! Thank gosh the design of the menstrual come has come a long way from the early designs!!
lieblingsmine I love red colored Ruby cup.
I'm guessing the ones with the bags were meant to be warn for long periods of time. Which is gross but like you said they were made by men so.
I mean, being able to wear the cup for the entirety of your period would be awesome....but not if it means having a bag of menstrual fluid waggling about! 😂

LMAO
I think it's started female cancer
