      Hot Milk (of course lol) and I, like you, was also putting this one off. I think some of my admiration towards this book comes from the time of year (late summer) that I read it. I adore Lucie Brock-Broido! I'm so glad that you've discovered her! Each of her books seems quite different to me, thematically and style-wise. You can really see her progression as an artist from her first book, A Hunger, which is more stream of conscious prose poetry, to her later works that feel more carefully crafted. Trouble in Mind is my favorite by her, I reread it at least once a year and remain equally moved each time.

    Hi Sophie! Thanks for your beautiful insight on your videos. Just wanted to say, I feel the same way about self help culture! Because I detest self help books, when they get recommended to me and I always say no, I’m automatically labelled as negative for some reason. It ties in to that whole toxic positivity thing which I also detest. Give me a Clarice Lispector book, her writing has “helped” me more than any self help book could in a million years.

    • @bibliosophie
      @bibliosophie  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      ha yes, i try not to be too dramatically anti self-help bc 1) hey, intelligent people can get good things from all sorts of places, but also bc 2) some people get very judgmental of my “negative world view.” i do feel i help myself through literature, just not “self-help literature” - lispector, bell hooks, audre lorde, proust are the type of authors who help to center me, have me search within and outside of myself. and isn’t that self-help?

    Ah it’s so nice to be reminded of Go Tell it on The Mtn. It was my first Baldwin…read decades ago. It’s now not my favorite, but oh my that first reading experience of Baldwin! How memorable. I too would like to try HotMilk. Man do I love her living biography series. ❤ You’ve given me a lot to think about in terms of not wanting to expose people to yourself when you’re sick, weak, less than…I don’t know. Despite hot milk turning out wonderful, you remind me i should raise my suspicions of writers “i should like”. That’s what happened with so many books for me this yr that i went into with certain expectations only to feel perplexed. But my perpetual optimism tells me i’m just getting to know everyone good and bad, and myself in the process! Loved the mini vlog intro!
    I’m also avoiding the last samurai for unknown reasons. I feel like it’s a book i’m just gonna have some mystical IT’S TIME moment where i’ll suddenly feel compelled to read it and it’ll somehow all click with whatever’s happening in my life. I wonder if some of Woolf's perspective in Being Ill comes from the times in which she lived. She'd been sent away for a "rest cure" once already. The treatments for many things tend to be isolating in some way especially for things that don't have a cure but are contagious. Perhaps this colors her argument.

    • @bibliosophie
      @bibliosophie  หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@NerdyNurseReads yes, i have to assume that rest cure culture has a big impact on her perspective. and definitely the necessary isolation of being contagious is such an important aspect - i think it colors how a lot of people view non-contagious illness as well. we often fear the contagion of suffering and death as much as the potential suffering and death of contagion

      @@bibliosophie I get that. One thing to bear in mind about Levy is that she was primarily a playwright for a number of years. I'm no expert on the theatre but I get the sense the her novels that are purely fictional are informed by theatrical narrative telling, such as the recurring motifs (the medusa in hot milk). It's been a while since I've read the cost of living series but these are of a slightly different style to her fiction and I would speculate, less informed by theatrical narrative. Perhaps if you feel the repeated imagery is overwrought, you may prefer C-O-L series. Then again, perhaps not, as they are definitely still "thinky white woman" books!
