Noting the Practice reference 🥰 Thank you for this discovery Sophie!
happy i was able to introduce the book to you!
muito gatos os dois, tão de parabens
🥺🤗
What a library!!!
thank you! 🤗
@@bibliosophie Hope you’re doing well!!! You’re have a strong heart!!!
I feel like you owe some people at least $100 for all those books recs. Some people have a hard time reading books from the library! $120 should be enough ☺️
hmmm i didn’t know i was signing up to bankroll people’s book hauls…. 🤣🤔
@@bibliosophie well you can sign up any time you like!!! I’m over buying books this year though, says the guy who just bought a varied of paperbacks from Goodwill 😭
You look like a Bene Gesserit priestess 🕊️✨💫
do they have shaved heads? i read dune in september, and i confess i’ve already forgotten - or never noticed - if they do!
@ In the first movie they do 🤔😬 I think they have bouffants and mohawks in to book? Joking 🙃
“I like it. I truly find no fault in it. And I can’t really quite get into it.” A line from Godard’s next Truffaut. The beautiful mug is an Annie Lennox via the Robert Palmer video directed by Fellini. Less diaphanous? Are you sure? 😑
definitely a goodly amount of annie lennox! and i can see the fellini! i definitely did not remember what was going on in this vlog - it was fun to revisit!
Hope you are doing ok..☀️
i am, thank you!
Fernando Pessoa in the form of Bernardo Soares is a hard read, but it's a very good bed table book and open it up occasionally and read a bit. He's a national teasure here in my country. And I'd love to one day make a not so artistic movie based on him and his heteronyms. I have to say, love your new look, but it's totally parcial. In my early movies I always tried to totally cut my actresses hair. Not always sucessful, I have to say :) P.S.: Great video, great editing.
yes, pessoa’s shadow looms very large! i think even if you like his work a lot, like i do, it’s impossible not to be annoyed or exhausted by some of his things. there’s something so self-contained and peculiar about him, all while he is obviously part of and responding to various cultural movements of the late nineteenth/early twentieth century and thank you!!
i decided to really commit to nonfiction november this year - the right to sex is on my list to get to before the end of the month! this is such a great list as always
🐥 thankeeee i… committed more than i have in other months this year lol
age of loneliness is going on my tbr, sounds challenging but also necessary right now. the shaved head looks so good on you!! loved hearing your thoughts on scaffolding, that was a really enjoyable one to me. much love to you sophie <3
i’ll look forward to your thoughts on age of loneliness if you get to it! and thank you! 🤗💖
oooh i haven’t seen anyone do this tag yet, such a thoughtful concept!! szabo has been on my tbr for FAR too long ugh
@@casskrug ooh! you should do the tag! i tag you!
I just bought Tiny Moons and bumped Entangled Life up my owned TBR list. Thank you

thank you! 🤗

You have a nice head.
thanks!
Have you listened to this video for about 10 seconds starting at the 7:00 mark. Or is it just on my computer. You start talking like a chipmunk.
@@RSelcov oh yes, ha ha. it’s sped up - i was going on and on trying to remember what the book was about. everything returns to normal speed about 10 sec later
a few years ago, Sophie. I was moving house. And I looked at my book collection, my library, and felt overwhelmed. I had about 500 books, and had carried them around with me for twenty plus years. It included many books I had never read, but that I had collected from charity shops that we have here in England. Not sure if you have them in America, but every high street has charity shops which always have a book section, and I'd bought so many over the years. I was overwhelmed with the effort of moving home, and suddenly all these books felt like burden upon my back and upon my soul. Instead of taking them. I unburdened myself of my library, and sold my shelves. I took the books to various charity shops to be re-read by others. I kept my Shakespeare collections, my anthology of Philip Larkin's poetry, and about ten novels I loved for sentimental reasons. I have kept my library since then minimalist. If I read a novel, buy a novel, I treat it like a night at the pub, where I will spend the price of a few books on a few drinks of an evening out, enjoy the novel and then pass it on, for someone else to read, or to the charity shop. I basically have a rule now. I own one book shelf, and nothing more than what fits on there is what I will own. Right now its about three quarters full. It feels nice, lighter, and I feel freer to read too, in a strange way
nothing like moving to make you rethink a book collection. i think i estimated i had about 1500 books two years ago, and i don’t even want to think about a future move! perhaps one day i’ll become more of a minimalist, but it doesn’t serve me now
I just found your channel yesterday, and I am really taken by the way you present the books, the synopses, your reaction and analysis. And we have similar tastes in books. I'm looking forward to catching up with your older videos and anticipating the ones to come.
that’s wonderful to hear! welcome to the channel :)
I’d added some of these to my TBR 🩵🌟
@@NicoleMae excellent! would love to know which!
Phenomenal selection! Many of these I've not read. I'm glad you pushed through the intimidation of filming (I know the feeling).
thank you! re intimidation at filming: i think almost all of us have it! i guess we must be masochistic or feel that its worth it to push through :)
Girl, you had me at Maximalist, LOL.
😁 sometimes more is more
this is such a great list you put together sophie! glad you kept recording because there are so many on this list i need to get to. so this was a great reminder & also inspo because i want to participate in non fic nov!
yay! i’m curious what you intend to pick up, and what you do end up reading ultimately 💖
out of context and a bit shallow, but the new style actually looks very pretty. we are hoping that you get regular phases of relief and wish you strength for the intense times. Also, very Interesting collection of books i think.
i like a bit shallow, especially if it’s complimentary :) thank you!
Sister Outsider is one of my core texts. One that's had immeasurable influence on me. I recommend it to everyone.
me too! a core influence that i basically always recommend!
I have also never read a full Rooney book…I just began Beautiful World. I think I might actually like Normal People but time will tell. I’m going to wait until I exhaust my tbr before reading intermezzo after hearing your thoughts 🙏 I’m so sorry for your health struggles 💜
how are you liking beautiful world? and thank you!
@@bibliosophiehmmm to be fair, I picked up Salvage The Bones by Jesmyn Ward, a tough read but utterly captivating and Beautiful World pales in comparison to it. I’m not sure if I am giving it a fair go right now. Although maybe I picked up another book because I was bored. I’m conflicted.
@ ha, i know that conflict well! “is the book not for me? am i not for the book? for now? forever?”
@@bibliosophieExactly!
for anyone curious, here's a list of the books mentioned that have been translated to brazilian portuguese (as of november 2024): Pesado - Kiese Laymon (2022) Garotas Brancas - Hilton Als (2023) O direito ao sexo: Feminismo no século vinte e um - Amia Srinivasan (2021) 24/7: Capitalismo tardio e os fins do sono - Jonathan Crary (2016) Metazoa: A vida animal e o despertar da mente - Peter Godfrey-Smith (2022) A trama da vida: como os fungos constroem o mundo - Merlin Sheldrake (2021) Para uma moral da ambiguidade - Simone de Beauvoir (2023) Pele Negra, Máscaras Brancas - Franz Fanon (2020) Notas de um filho nativo - James Baldwin (2020) Contra a interpretação: e outros ensaios - Sunsan Sontag (2020) Irmã Outsider: ensaios e conferências - Audre Lorde (2019) O acontecimento - Annie Ernaux (2022)
@@annaluizab.365 thank you for the list! i’m pinning this comment :)
You will get through this! I love your channel Sophie. You encourage me to stretch myself in the content I read and think about. I love hearing you speak, your thoughts are so inspiring. Thank you Sophie, you are about the same age as my now grown children, from this Mamma 's heart to yours ..... a big hug and healing light ❤️
thank you so much! i love to read that i encourage you to stretch yourself! and thank you for your encouragement 💖
What a great list! I read Sontag Chee, Ernaux and Laymon, loved them. Heavy is one of the most beautiful writings with such a heavy story, it really moved me. It somewhat reminds me of a Tom Waits' quote: "I like beautiful melodies telling me terrible things." I have Sister Outsider and Notes of a Native Son on my shelf waiting for the right moment.
@@sabinagruden2702 ooh yes, “beautiful melodies telling me terrible things” is a wonderful description of many books i like! i think you’ll like lorde and baldwin when you get to them 🖤
I'm agog at these recommendations!!! Elite taste as always; cannot wait to request some of these at my local library!
@@parnissia 🤗 woohoo! out of curiosity, what do you plan to check out? 👀
JUST WOW
a good wow i hope?
once again, a stellar sexy list. just got my hands on Against Interpretation and might have to do it for november!
the sontag streak continues! i think november or december is great time for against interpretation
Cancer made a free man out of me. Keep it up! Going to peruse your book recommendations, thank you! And speaking of Pessoa - check The Year of the Death of Ricardo Reis by Jose Saromago 😊
thank you! i've read a few saramago, but never the year of the death of ricardo reis -- good idea! edit: ha ha i see i already have it saved in my long list of ebooks. i remember someone else recommending it to me some months ago 😇
Thank you so much for these recommendations, I appreciate it so much. E x
my pleasure! it was good to think back on recentish reads :)
I own most of these books and have yet to read a lot of them. Good reminder.
i feel like a significant percentage of my youtube viewing is me thinking, “oh ya, i want/need to read that!” what’s calling yr name?
@ thick, the hatred of poetry, the right to sex, sister outsider…too many.
Oh oh and tiny moons, a small body of water is a fave of mine if you enjoy Nina Mingya Powles and want more.
@@r.enee.morris and you remind me that i’ve been wanting to read small bodies of water for a couple of years!
I loved "How to read now". I was so happy to read someone who is as angry about the state of affairs in this world.
ya, i found it a balm to read her takes, and her anger
Soooo many fab sounding recommendations here. Thick and Other Essays I’ve had on my periphery for a while. I can’t believe I’ve not read any Alexander Chee, I really need to rectify that. Entangled Life has intrigued me for ages, I just didn’t know if a whole book of I loooooved A History of My Brief Body, you’ve reminded me I need to read his short story collection.
entangled life is a lot of pages of fungus, so if that’s not your thing, it might be a bit long 🤣 definitely recommend you pick up thick - it’s funny, poignant and smart. just a really good read. and how to write an autobiographical novel!
oh, and i want to read the belcourt short story collection ben just read too! i have designs to borrow his copy :)
I’ve really meant to get to the Alexander Chee. It sounds intriguing. And the Ben Lerner. I’m looking for that at my library! Ooh Because Internet sounds right up my alley! I scored. My library system has both. 👏👏👏Happening remains my favorite Ernaux.
woohoo! are you an audiobook person? the audiobook for because internet is good. and if you like the author, i mostly recommend her podcast lingthusiasm (some episodes are less interesting to me)
I have just begun to emerge from a flux of a few years where I stopped reading fiction and only read non fiction, mostly history books. Its good to see you doing so well, and everlastingly reading and thinking x
@@zoobee i think it’s easy to get into a particular type of reading zone and forget that other kinds of books exist! i’m certainly guilty of it, and only partially successful in expanding my horizons :)
I've selected so many books i'm going to read from this episode. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if you kept your new look after your recovery, it reveals so much power, lightness and openness.
@@ilovebeing2788 excellent, i love to hear it! which ones have caught your attention? and thank you?

Against Interpretation by Susan Sontag has been on my tbr forever, this video is my cue to read it. I should also like read de Beauvoir, preferably in French--is her prose 'easy'?
yes, may this be yr sign!! beauvoir’s prose is very good and clear, so that to some extent makes it easier in my opinion. it’s not simple, however. have you read any of her other writing in french? i find her voice similar in memoir, fiction and philosophy
@@bibliosophie Nope, only read her in English. But I think I'm ready to read her in French. And if her prose is 'clear' I should be okay. Merci Sophie xoxo
