He knows how to use props, how to blur fiction into his bits, he knows how to be charming, how to use his body, he knows how to tell good jokes with deadpan delivery, joy or earned moments of sadness. But where Acaster excels is in his moments of anger. He's an absolute joy when he's entirely wound up.

Interesting video! I am a fan of James Acaster because his style of comedy is so accessible to me. Some key devices for his comedy are world building, seemingly disproportionate or intense emotional responses, facial expressions that do not precisely match the emotion of the story, and a somewhat disjointed use of his own body.
If you know an autistic person or are one yourself, this all probably seems very familiar to you. Acaster leans in to a lot of behaviors and expressive devices that, within a performance setting, are deemed masterful, exciting, and unique; they also happen to be very common behaviors and expressive devices for many autistic people.
I am happy for his success and truly love his work. I hope we are able to see not only a wider acceptance for this style of comedy, but more than that, a greater appreciation and respect for people who express themselves differently than the social norm in all areas of life.
Watching Nanette kind of broke my enjoyment of any righteous anger comedy, so after that when I found Acaster, it was at the perfect time. Silly comedy is so damn good.
It was a really great show, a really well put together show, but also I needed a fucking lie down shortly after it
the silly childlike rage is something i've been doing as a joke for years because i think it's hilarious. i recently got super into james's comedy but i didn't even register that he did that! maybe that's why i like him so much
6:00 his Bake Off performance is a little harder to watch these days, knowing that he literally was in the middle of a breakdown when they were filming it 😅 also the shows that make up Repertoire are the most finely tuned, honed and polished stand-up performances I’ve ever seen. It’s seeing someone who’s absolutely mastered their craft

I am so impressed by how he takes the mood of whatever he’s saying and blasts an ultraviolet BEAM of that exact sentiment straight into your brain so effectively through his tone and expression
even as I was typing this comment I started laughing at the silent footage of him on the panel shows because he’s just so emotive

That was a good video! I love James Acaster, and his anger often sells me on the story he's trying to tell. I will follow through his rambling until the punch line and realise: It's been 10 minutes and I have been fooled? Good content!
James Acaster is my absolute favourite comedian in the world. Repertoire and Cold Lasagne do not get enough recognition.

Cool analysis! I've only recently found out about him (it was a gif of his Too Challenging For Ya?! bit). I love cerebral comics who play around with truth and fiction and Acaster definitely fits that description.

Be curious to hear your thoughts on Cold Lasagne. I feel like that's an example of James actually giving in to his fury and just riding that wave. It's definitely more uncomfortable viewing than Repertoire, but I think it might be his strongest work so far!

Very interesting watching this video right after watching the Angry Prophets one and the Character Comedians one. I think in addition to Acaster's childish, petulant anger there is at times also a more righteous fury that simmers underneath. His jokes about Brexit, for example
