I live in Florida and I stopped buying games a few years back. It's no longer about collecting because of resellers in my area. prices at our video game stores are at Ebay or above. thanks to grading video games, has made it even worse. With big companies faking auctions of games, the company graded themselves, and then buying their own games for around a million has messed up the value of games.

Been this way in St. Augustine, Florida for a long time. Before it closed the flea market here had one of the most offensively over priced resellers I've ever seen, and one of the pawn shops here wouldn't even put prices on his retro games and when you tried to buy he would pull up eBay and say "the highest priced listing for this game is hundreds of dollars, so that's what I have to charge" and this was 10 years ago

Once at a flea market, a worker told mom that her high price was compared to ebay also. ebay is bad to compare prices in ways, because the same item is going to have very high and very low prices and in the middle. one thrift store priced a Laser disc player for almost a hundred because of ebay. @@jimstone8842

When these retro game store owners start, realizing that it’s collectors out after this shit not millionaires maybe they’ll get more customers. The prices have done nothing but go up year after year after year and all we wanted to is put it on our game shelf. Most of us are just trying to replace our video game shelves from our childhood that way we can whenever we feel the itch to play a certain game we can just grab it off the shelf like we used to as a kid throw it in the system, hit the power button and play, what I have realized in my aging adulthood is that it’s a bunch of younger kids. Who’ve acquired this stuff for very little and are now trying to get a fortune for it profiting off nostalgia I mean I’m not against anyone getting their dollar but to mark up your inventory so much from what you originally got it for is criminal and you deserve no customers.

If they charge too much, they won’t make sales. I make tons of $ at conventions so I must price things correctly-but still way, way higher than you’d like to see. I bought an snes Aero Fighters CIB for $150 12 years ago. If 20 people are willing to pay me $2500 for it, that makes me a criminal?

It’s not sustainable. I agree if someone offers you that, take it. But this hobby is not an investment. And if you base a business off of the ridiculously inflated prices, you will be out of it in a few short years.

@@mkendall8393 I don’t know how you define “a few short years,” but a friend of mine opened a retro store some 10 years ago. It was fabulous for him for I’m guessing 5 years, had a lull where it was just ok, and then came the retrogaming madness associated with the pandemic. In short, he’s done spectacularly. Saying that the retrogaming hobby isn’t “sustainable” from a financial standpoint is like saying baseball cards and comic books aren’t sustainable. That said, I wouldn’t bet my family’s financial future on videogames; I think you really have to know what you are doing.

Shoutouts from Texas! I have been to several events like this in the video. There is always people willing to buy if they can find deals. The problem I run into it seems time after time is people are not willing to deal on games and expect full prices for their stuff. I don't mind paying for something that is rare but I not willing to pay for something I can find online or in some other random place for a lot less. Disc-only GCN RE4 for $100. Animal Crossing GCN for $80 with no memory card. A box + dual TN Pkmn Red/Blue n3DS console for $600. A Japanese Pikachu N64 for $600.
Was it any wonder why 98% of the stock the sellers brought didn’t move? When I swung back Day 2, the same items were still there - the only things selling were the sub-$40 items. The great thing about these events is that haggling and bargaining is expected. I usually end up doing really well while giving deals. They're a great way to get specific items you're looking for, typically cheaper than ebay but you're right - nothing beats finding it in the wild. Now, the patience to wait and hunt is another story.

@urbanknish I hope you're right but the problem with real estate is a catastrophic lack of supply, legal red tape like zoning laws and high interest rate for builders keeping them from building enough and greed, when they do build they only want to build luxury homes and not stuff first time home buyers earning the median income can actually afford.

I believe there are several reasons for that.
    1. they fear the money most people sell them so they don't even look for them anymore (check some prices in ebay, a game of ps2 around 20-30 euro they sell it 80-100 euro, huge difference)
    2. there are people who actively not only shaming people who buy games like that and call them pirates but also they actively try to cause them legal issues, I speak from experience. Which is funny enough cause so far those same people slipped up and are the one who actually pirate stuff.

  • @lgmh

The problem that I have seen, not only North America but in Europe as well, is prices at the eBay or above level. That’s a no go for me. I buy stuff for my curated collection not for reselling purposes so I would wait a year or more for a good deal before caving to a high price.
My other issue is that I don’t enjoy playing on emulators, it does not have the same feel for me. I know it is all mental and I should be able to enjoy games any way, but I guess we like what we like.

I admire the video and sense of community. Its a nice spirited video.
I have really strong views on modern reselling and resellers. I think making money and sharing the love of the hobby is one thing. However I think resellers inflate prices to near ridiculous levels. I note some of the inflated prices that folks paid in your video.
You have to delineate the love of a hobby with making 'bank' in my humble opinion. People come out to events like this because they are passionate about the hobby and MAYBE JUST MAYBE they might be able to purchase something to strengthen or continue that love and passion.
If you tangle profit with this passion or love we'll all eventually lose out on every level. Majority of regular people can't really afford the hobby currently and are either sacrificing in some other unjustifiable way or just avoiding these events entirely.
Cost of fuel > Travel time > Likelihood of finding something worthwhile. The numbers do not add up no more for the average person.
Huge respect for pulling off a community spirited event. But until resellers either embrace the hobby rather than their 'investments' then these events will continue to dwindle and falter. The speculation bubble has burst now. We all have the ability to 'do well' from video games either spiritually, financially or both.
Greed and investment play are now phrases in a retro gamer's lexicon.

    • @MortsGarage
      @MortsGarage  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

I appreciate your thoughtful and measured critique. It was well articulated and critical in a well spoken way.
I have no problem with pricing items at market rates, and I do anticipate haggling to happen as well. It’s always a good time at these events - lots of familiar faces and hanging out.
I don’t see myself pricing things far below retail in some sort of retro game price protest, but I aim to be consistent and fair. I also can appreciate that not everyone will be happy about the prices of retro games. But hopefully we can all agree to be friendly and kind - as you’ve demonstrated here.
Cheers to you in the new year 🤘

I have the feeling that most retro dealers and "investors" have more games than collectors are interested. I hope all of them get out of the market, alongside most brick n mortar stores.
It sickens me when I walk into a stand or store, find a couple of games with reasonable prices on game tags only to have the seller googling it at the check out, I always drop the stuff right away and call them on their BS.
Older collectors already have most of the games that they are truly interested in and newer collectors get priced out of the market buying literal trash for insanely expensive prices while you can just go out in the wild and find really good deals.
I have quite a collection, never paid these absurd prices and never will. I still get pretty good deals every once in a while, one just needs to know where to look for it.
