- Australian Musician editor Greg Phillips catches up with legendary Iron Maiden drummer Nicko McBrain at NAMM Show 2018
Note: For the purpose of the NAMM Oral History use, Greg Phillips wasn’t miked up, so his audio is low. Here are the questions he asked Nicko.
INTERVIEW QUESTIONS AND TIME POINTS:
00.25 What was the spark which lit your flame for music?
3.:0: A couple of your early bands were Streetwalkers and the Pat Travers Band …. what did you learn from your time in those bands that you took into iron maiden?
5:30 What do you remember about your first gig with Iron Maiden?
7:55 When a new song is presented to the band, do you know immediately what you are going to do with your drum parts or do you like to take it away and live with it for a while?
10:43 Which Iron Maiden song are you most proud of in regard to your drum parts?
12:20 You’ve seen a lot changes in technology over the years. I wonder how that has changed the way you play? For instance, do you remember the first time you used in-ear monitors?
14:50 Tell me about some of the gear companies you have formed relationships with over the years
18:25 If someone was building a drum kit for you, what’s the number one feature that they’d have to get right for you to be happy?
19:48 You’ve never really been a fan of the double kick, why is that?
21:24 What about the nights when things didn’t go right. Any falling off the drum stool stories or anything like that?
29:04 Iron Maiden has always been pioneering in regard to band merchandise, particularly with the use of your mascot Eddie. What’s the band’s philosophy in regard to the merch?
32:42 We’re at the NAMM Show at the moment. Do you enjoy coming to NAMM?
36:15 What are you most proud of?

Nicko is not only a beast on the drums, but he's a lovely man, with an incredible sense of humor.
He sure is.
Dragonlady474
He mentioned that he was inspired by Ringo Starr as a kid in the mid 60s. If I was growing up then I could see having Ringo as an influence. But as the late 60's became the early 70's, and I realized there actually were GOOD drummers out there, they wouldve become my influences! Lol
I see what you're saying, and I agree. I'm not a huge Ringo fan. But kudos to him for inspiring our man.
Nicko need to play double bass !!!! he playing same shit over & over no evolution to better !!!!!
@Breno Baptista hardly you can see Metal without it today ..😌
Interviewers volume: 1/10
Nicko McBrain's volume: 10/10
yopez haha
intro music 50/10
In football terms you’d say nicko had 99% possession
I love this guy he's so down to earth and humble for being such an icon.
Nicko need to play double bass !!!! he playing same shit over & over no evolution to better !!!!!
Jeff Thornton- What a great guy & hang he 'd be my friend ☺
Nicko was my spark...I've been playing drums for 30ish years now.
Thank you Nicko🤘UP THE IRONS🤘
I love Nicko and Iron Maiden, the best of the best! Iron Maiden are the reason l love metal so much.
Same, my dude. Still my favorite band of all time. :)
Damn, I almost started crying out fo sentiment towards the end, when Nicko talks about how proud he is of his buddies in Maiden -Amazing guy, a real guy :)
Right with you. I was waiting to see a tear in his eye! He tells it true about Bruce who has never really stated he was arrogant but has wised up and eludes to it in his own way. He's changed the most and for the better. Nicko admitted he had to change too but it wasn't a big deal, just a minor adjustment. A proper London boy who doesn't forget his roots. What a superb bloke!
Nicko is such a legend those stories he told are gold! Love when he uses his voice to imitate the drum parts of maiden songs
'we're old school, mate' and thank you for that sir
This guy must be the greatest guy in rock/metal.What a lovely guy to listen too. Been a fan since Piece of Mind!! Up the irons \m/
Riff is King wished I discovered Maiden in 83’!! I was only 5 though, 🤣
that’s fact
Not only the best drummer, but a MONSTER story teller!
He is amazing. I can't wait for him to publish his autobiography!
That just adds a deeper respect for the entire band and their bond and how they keep delivering to their fans!!!!
Nicko for President!
Watched the Nico Mcbrain interview (Iron Maiden) really nice guy and down to earth, yes Nico for President, ♤♤♤☆☆☆☆ mikerocks1979@gmail.com
Too bad he wasn't born here :(
He's British
@@sampeake4235 Nicko for the next Queen of UK!!!
@@fruskaneitor5778 haha great idea
Love Nicko. So entertaining... On all levels. Part about the in-ears is awesome. Totally relate.
One of the best if not the best interviews ever! God bless you Nicko
Yeah he is a born again Christian I heard that's always a great thing I heard he is working with Bruce. Bruce is spiritual but agnostic.
Model drummer: can play like a beast, and has a great sense of humor.
Excellent interview! Up the Irons! would love to see a similar interview with Dave Murray.
Iron Maiden fans are the best fans in the world... Ultimately Loyal and obsessed until the end!!
That I love of this band , team work , no alter egos , and you can sense that on the stage . Good work guys !
hahaha how can you not love the guys in Iron Maiden!!! :D
What an excellent interview, they don't make them like Nicko anymore what a wonderful person
Love that guy. So down to earth, funny and genuine. Makes me smile. Love his drumming too. He and Steve is one of the greatest rythmsections in rock imo.
Great interview. I made the decision to bug out of school with a pair of headphones on listening to Makin Magic! Never looked back!
You see the video they made in Germany back in the mid-seventies Pat Travers Mars cowling
Nicko McBrain its a Legend of the histoire of the Hard Rock Music and very english gentleman and i have a very sens of houmur english Goodbye Mr Mc Brain and Up the Iron Maiden for all Life 🖐️💪😀🎤🎸🎻📀📀📀📀📀📀📀📀📀📀📀📀📀📀📀📀📀📀📀📀📀📀
hes brilliant..one of my favourite musicians to watch being interviewed..great guy
What a fantastic interview.
Keep in shape mate, see you on the US tour in 2019!
bubba19805 they're doing a US tour?
they have to be. For the amount of effort they put into this stage gear for this last run, it will sell wildly in the US. They just like to take breaks between tours now (understandably).
Amazing to think he is 67
I could listen to this guy all day. Verbally and musically
Respect
Finally that someone asks good questions.
I'm a huge Maiden fan, old-school rivethead. I'm not a drummer but I found all the talk about his gear to be fascinating! Up the irons Nicko, thank you!
I never tire of listening to Nicko.
One of those rare individuals that radiate kindness and of such stature. My life has been downslope since I saw them last month live for the first time.
I sure as s*^% don’t want it to have been the last time I see them live
Love Nicko! Great Drummer, great interview. Love his drumming on Flash of the Blade, from Powerslave.
Best drummer to ever live. 1/6 of my absolute idols.
God Bless him a amazing drummer. My first drum hero Rick Allen takes guts and grit to come back from a injury and losing your arm.
A very humble and genuine chap. Steve Gadd (RIP) always spoke very highly of Nicko.
Drummer one ? he is still alive as i know
@@ozgurhazarmusic27 The English Steve Gadd mate not the American drummer.
@@azzawazza8635 Yeah but the English Steve Gadd was actually a pretty good drummer himself, right? He played for the AOR/prog band 'Charlie', classic '70s drug-referencing bandname!
Nicko seems like a really super nice guy.....very down to earth. Awesome!
and on another note, I like how Nicko mentioned that the guys in the band are the same today as they were way back in the early days.....very cool, and very humble......awesome!
@@edwardgirard6983 very true....I love the fact that the guys are "regular" guys that don't have a "rock star" attitude....they love their fans...that speaks volumes. God bless them all.
Such a wonderful human being and musician!!!
Drum Design & Rock & Roll ribs, Nicko was an amazing teacher!!!!
Awesome drummer, brilliant human being
....Nicko is such gentleman and an amazing drummer...great interview, look forward to the tour this year....UP THE IRONS\m/
Legend!
I had to figure out what the questions were based on the answers. What’s up with that? Nicko, we love ya man.
Nicko's been my influence from the start, I don't know him but what i do know of him he's top's!
i can listen to Him all day long and more
superb interview
One of the very best drummers ever.
I met him at NAMM 2018🤘🏾feel lucky 🍀
Great interview
Nico that was lovely. thank you.
I love his playin and he justs keep on gettin better, Better all the time, I had made copies of Puttin it Straight , for any drummer i knew and i didnt know who it was , cause it was a homeade, and one day a friend said to me , thats The new Drummer on IM piece of Mind,,,I am a big fan of y2k forward, and Dance, Matter, Frontier , i play guitar, sometimes i put it on just to listen to Nicko,,,,,Great Fills,,,,,
Great interview and description, thanks for upload
These interviews with iron maiden are brilliant a massive and successful band like iron maiden and every band member is so down to earth no ego no I'm a big star thing going on Lee Hambleton from Sheffield
Very nice you indexed a list with the questions and their time links!
Very nice person indeed. He is always laughing. His good humor is able to bring everybody to the same environment. Iron Maiden is my favorite band and Nicko is the most charismatic person in the world of music I´ve ever seen. Up the Iron´s and God save Nicko and the band.
Mesmerised and transfixed by Joe Morello. That’s a great start!
love nicko, great to hear this, its a shame we cant hear the questions....
We love you Nicko ! UP THE IRONS
It"s interesting to know more about Nicko met Ringo Star, both bands are my favorite.
Lovely guy, great interview.
What a cool guy & an amazing drummer.
Fantastic drummer and such a nice humble guy.
Just love that guy awsome drummer and a funny guy to listen to.. :-)
Nicko Mcbrain is a drumming legend!
i love to see positive posts , you are Great People,,,
Steve Adler was my first hero then at 8 years old I heard Seventh Son and Nicko blew me away. Still my favourite drummer and Seventh Son my favourite album.
I'd say my style was a mix between the two. Others may doubt that 😂
Adler got into this business to 'get chicks' but was such a natural talent! I heard Guns & Maiden around the same time roughly 1987. Very different to Nicko but a great mix to combine the two!
True legends!!!!!!!
Nicko is amazing in my opinion one of the best drummer in the world.
I think Nicki seems like a lovely guy. He is very down to earth and always has a smile on his face too.
And he knows what he is doing with a drum kit!
Classic chat with Nicko he is such a nice guy
Awesome drummer love Nicko. So down to earth 🙌💓
I had the pleasure of meeting Nicho today and chat with him for a few minutes... what a humble wonderful person living as an Icon.
Being live at several Maiden Concerts i can say that Bruce and Nicko get the Most applause!!
He is a fantastic drummer with unbelieveable feeling for rhythms - and he is very sympathic and full of humour!🍾👍
I could listen to him talk all day
That was a great interview. I like the q&a's a lot. I think that was a quite different interview from the most that we hear and watch all the time and i don't mean Maiden members only, but great or famous musicians. As a listener and a fan its much more interested to hear some great untold stories than a speech for the tour, the upcoming album or how amazing are the fans.... Questions like... hey Nicko what do you remember when you rehearse Deja Vu, Be Qucick or be dead, Can i play with Madness.... any funny stories? Which is the track with the most takes.... Difficult parts witch you had to rethink your pattern or took you the most time to play it exactly as it came out? How you decide to use DW on foot after the Speed King and not TAMAs Iron Cobra for example or a different one? How you decide over the years to simplify your playing style... back in the 80's you where using so much triplets and huge drum breaks with complicated hand rolls... from 1992 your studio play became more solid with less fusion parts... Which period you think Maiden where at the most dark and difficult vibe? Questions like these! As a fan of Nicko i heard nice stories and different kind of stuff, thats why i really enjoyed this one!
Such a humble nice guy.
Nicko is just a great guy and drummer, too! 🥁👌😎🙏👍💪
Nicko is such a lovely man... I love his vibe
Loved it!
Great interview
Nicko, it wasn't Churchill's speech to introduce the shows on the Wolrd piece tours... that one was the intro ond the World slavery tour... To introduce the Where eagles dare tune on the World piece tour it was the soundtrack of the same titled movie with Richard Burton, a stunning soundtrack by the way.
Just a stand up man!!! That's all to be said here. How could i forget to say bad ass drummer as well👍👍👍
As far as being a great musician he knows what he is talking about. He certainly is a great drummer and personality
This guy is great!
What a great guy Nicko is and he always has those interesting and funny stories.
5:23 "it's important to be heard" says Nicko..
*interviewer cries silently*
definately one of my fav drummers , he may play in a qoute "Heavy Metal Band" he is old school , a lot of people may not realize that but that is just one of many things about his drumming that I love.....plus he has a great sense of humour!!! very funny guy!!!! All Hail Nicko!!!
He's looking good and has got a very lovely caracter
Humble guy and fantastic player
Ever god bless Nicko😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
So, Australian Musician , you somehow figured out, it's not important for the questions to be heard on the video. What were you thinking?
Greg Phillips should have a mic too.
It would be interesting to be able to hear the questions.
Legendary
I love Nicko!!!
P you guys get more credit nowadays than you realize I was a drummer once I didn't have a fan I was overheating and I if I didn't keep beat I was shunned. Be proud iron maiden wouldn't be if it wasn't for you and all of the guys we give respect for all you guys are a true inspiration and play music everyday .🤫🎶🎸
Great interview.
seems like a lovely fella
Cool, the first real drumsolo I ever heard was Castilian Drums by Joe Morello in 5/8. That sparked my enthusiasm for drums also!
I love this man
